25000 km on my Smart Electric. 90000 km on my Tesla S. That's a lot of all-electric driving. The electricity is so cheap here in Ontario Canada for off-peak charging, it's 4x cheaper to run than any gas car.

I was hoping to hear about crash survivability. How does this little car do, when it goes up against larger cars? Suggestion: put your phone in your shirt pocket. Don't worry about touching the rear window, all 2-seater roadsters are like that as well. Regarding technology: any car electric or gas will get upgraded each year.

I drive a smart electric all the time through car sharing in Germany. It is fantastic in European cities where space is at a premium, having the ability to fit into short parking spots is a huge advantage. However, I don't think that this car is useful in the U.S. as the roads are so big and the parking spots so large. Even parallel spots are often marked and have a dedicated meter in the U.S., so the advantage of having such a short car is lost. This is more of a gimmicky --look at me-- car in the U.S. market.

Dave Travels, this is simply not true. Most city infrastructure in US is dated. Very much so with limited park. Parking downtown in a typical city can get very expensive.

17KwHr battery and 70 to 80 mile range, not bad but it is small car. For four seater cars the rule of thumb is 35KwHr = 100 mile range give or take. Tesla model S 90D (90KwHr) is about 300 miles. More range? then larger battery but longer charge times. Think of gasoline as a battery with a power density of approximately 10KwHr per litre (about 12.5 KwHr per Kg). However the internal combustion engine can only convert about 25% of the energy in that gasoline battery. Electric motors convert the energy of an electric battery at better than 90%. The nirvana moment is when batteries achieve power densities of 2.5 KwHr per litre and can be fully charged in ten minutes. When that happens electric cars will have the range and ease of 'filling up' as internal combustion cars.

I dont foresee 10-20 minute charge times... That would require a substantial amount of energy and heat. Extreme amounts of heat causes a lot of degradation.

The Fast Lane Car, waterproof the rear of the smart and remove the rear hatch.. and you have the tiniest pick up in the Home Depot parking lot. My point is that the interior is not much different from that of a corvette or a single cab S-10 pickup or perhaps a chevy Colorado. In those you can also reach behind and touch the back. A mercedes convertible also lacks rear space but nobody criticizes it as that is not a fault but a function of its design. The smart for two is a city car not an off road vehicle nor a long haul SUV. It has incredible agility at low "city" speeds and has more leg room than a Lincoln Navigator. At 6'3" 260 lbs and a longish torso, I fit in the smart very comfortably and yet don't fit in a Camry if it has a sunroof. The horsepower and torque specs of the smart are very adequate if not "zippy" due to the vehicles light weight. NO, it's not a corvette and it won't blow the doors off of any sports car.. but again, it's not meant to. It will put a smile on onlookers from age 4 to 94 and if you were to use one for a while, you'd see that it also puts a smile on you just by driving it. Let me tell you that in the many vehicles I've owned, the smart has been the one that total strangers will constantly give you a thumbs up just because.. oh and that turning radius! You know that there is nothing more pleasurable than doing that. Especially in a vehicle that has such a low center of gravity.
