2017 Cadillac XT5 FIRST DRIVE REVIEW (2 of 2)

MotoMan drives the 2017 Cadillac XT5 crossover. Along the way he demonstrates an all new 3.6 V6 engine as well as points out some of the key differences in an almost 10% reduction in weight from the Cadillac SRX. Putting the engineering aside, he demonstrates flash tech - everything from a special clutch in the AWD system to the now third integration of Apple Car Play in a Cadillac - as well as functional design elements . . .

the interior looks great, 10X better than the aging and somewhat old GM interior of the last gen. good job cadillac.

I love the XT5, it's subtle and echoes the Cadillac design philosophy, on the other hand the Lexus RX is just too much, it's hard to look at it and say to yourself hmm... I like it, it's not love at first sight but it might grow on you, Cadillac XT5 on the other hand is love at first sight, they improved everything from the SRX, the only thing I would love to see is a XT5 Vsport with 3.0TT from CT6 or the 3.6TT from CTS Vsport. I live in the Middle East - Dubai and people love SRX here it's best selling Cadillac here too even more so than the RX since its too expensive to afford, people tend to buy SRX more so cause of the value proposition and options.

Hi George. From Nashville. I think Cadillac made the right choices in this vehicle on first blush based on their experience with the segment. And by that I mean a FWD/AWD soft-ute platform. The 1st generation SRX was a RWD/AWD experience based upon the bones of the 1st generation CTS. The SRX was widely praised in auto magazines for its driving dynamics in that while it wasn't a car that you were going to swing the tail out on, it didn't understeer like FWD based crossovers. You could also order it with the Northstar V8. And I should know, I owned one for several years. One big problem....no one bought them. So when it became time to make the 2nd gen car, Cadillac looked around and said, "What's the market leader?" "Ah, it's the Lexus RX. Let's build that." And that they did. What's interesting about that choice is that the outgoing car in its hoary 7th year was outselling it's previous three years with the main change was adding CUE a while back. So clearly the buyers liked this car, even if it wasn't a "driver's car" like the CTS....heck it was Cadillac's biggest seller by far. And the 2nd gen SRX outsold every competitor that wasn't named "Lexus". So it should be to the surprise of no one that the car takes the 2nd gen SRX formula and makes it lighter and better, also adding a highly profitable Platinum option. As for the lack of engine choices, I think Cadillac managers also remember the launch of the 2nd gen SRX which had two engine choices....the first being a 3.0L V6 that was underpowered for the mass of the vehicle, and the 2.8L turbo V6 borrowed from Saab that wasn't available at launch for a number of months. Both engines were discontinued after the launch year for the 3.6L V6 that was in use ever since. If Cadillac makes a Vsport or something (3.0L twin turbo anyone?), it's best to likely wait a year or so to get the traditional buyer (read: real estate agent) into the vehicle they want and not have to have the dealerships worry about stocking a higher powered SUV for now.

Ordered the Red/Maple Platinum and am awaiting delivery in Oregon where I will vacation and ship home to Honolulu, Hawaii. I've looked at the Lexus for many years and the only good thing I can say about that car is thank goodness they finally offer dual exhausts! But, I think GM has really improved in past years and the Lexus to me is old school. And, the single exhaust issue turned me off back in 2004 and I ended up buying a Nissan Murano which was much more sportier and a great car. Anyway, I decided to get my wife the XT5 Platinum fully loaded since she bought me a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. Comparing the Corvette and XT5, they both have the 8 speed paddle assist automatic shifting, heads-up display and nice leather appointments. I know we will enjoy the Caddy and appreciate your reviews. Can't wait to go to the mainland and drive her.

I drove Lexus beginning in 2000 fed up with American made vehicles but in 2015 switched to Cadillac SRX over the Lexus RX . One main reason was the Warranty coverage and Two the Design . Very minor problems over the past almost 3 years , the last being a problem with noise due to a bushing on the control arms and the rear hatch . Both will be repaired while I will drive a new 2017 XT5 loaner. I can see the salesmen salivating at the thought of selling me something tomorrow while I wait for my loaner to pull up.

I test drive the XT5 and after test driving the BMW X5 and the MB E coup I bought the Cadillac XT5. I liked it so much I ditched my MB and I have no regrets and saved $40k here in Toronto Canada. I also like this cross over because our winters here can be harsh at times and the AWD is very helpful on icy winter roads. I believe that this XT5 platform is a major tech change platform and I expect more great things coming from Cadillac in the future. In other words if Cadillac was a stand alone stock, buy, buy, buy. You will be very happy seven years going forward. Yep no mystery with my felling. RW Toronto Canada

Just Bought the XT5 Platinum AWD, with the red passion tint coat and maple sugar interior. I live in Wyoming and love the way in handles on the snowy slick roads. I did test drive the Lexus RX but I just couldn't get over how UGLY the RX is, wow is it ugly. I really do like the XT5, it handles well, it is very comfortable to drive, it synced up with my Galaxy S7 edge seemlessly, and it looks damn good for suv crossover. I do drive my Toyota Tundra 4x4 most of the time in Wyoming, but love to travel in the XT5.

I really like the new interior and the exterior has kinda grown on me a bit more after a second episode. Out of curiosity does the XT5 still have the butt vibrator, aka lane departure and obstacle warning system? I remember driving an SRX that had an overly aggressive system that would buzz you if got remotely close to a line. I was driving through some highway maintenance and the damn thing wouldn't stop buzzing and I couldn't figure out how to shut it off. So, I found myself silently yelling at the car, with it buzzing left cheek, right cheek as I creeped over lanes in stop and go traffic, with my nephews asleep in the backseat. I wish Cadi best of luck on this, because this vehicle will pay for all the cool cars they might develop....ATS-V Wagon?

I drive a 2005 Kia Sedona van. I have three kids. They are now teenagers. I would love to win this car. We are having a drawing on my anniversary October 28, 2016. The school, Community Christian School in McDonough, GA, is raising money and Heritage Cadillac is giving away one of these beautiful Cadillacs. I think it is evolutionary, like you said and I would love to drive an evolutionary car. Considering that my 2005 minivan doesn't even have anything to do with iPhones because it is so old. I've enjoyed motherhood, but I would love a luxurious car so please wish me luck !!!!!! Great job on showing us more about this wonderful Cadillac.

The Caddy! Why would anyone pick an ugly car over a beautiful one ? The lexus doesn't even look like a luxury car. The styling on the Lexus does not say luxury but looks like a design people want to forget. I think certain brands like Lexus seem more premium than luxury losing a big edge in styling and prestige.

“Mine is not on the latest version of Android” I remember those days & I don’t miss it one bit. Regarding the Design, I'll split it into two sections: - The exterior design: The Jaguar F-Pace S is the best looking CUV in the segment. - The interior design: The GLC with the Burmesters wins. I like what they did with the interior …. Its not Volvo xx90 level yet, but it’s a huge step in the right direction & much better than the previous designs, almost GM-free… hopefully the next generation of Cadillacs will be completely GM-free! They need to be more liberal with the use of Aluminum or stainless steel in the interior, Chrome is fine & all, but look at zee Germans & Volvo. Also, enough with the Beiges & Blacks … the interiors need more colors. As for the new gauges, the new layout is very cool from a distance … very Audiish, but the matte black plastics are very annoying. The base XT5 still uses the same awful gauges from the ATS. As always, excellent work M!

Great review. Two critiques that come to mind are looking at 4:17, the c pillar reminds me of an Acura MDX (not a bad thing). Also, the headlights should follow alongside the light signature and come down a few inches further. Makes for a cleaner look and not as if Cadillac ran out of material (or money) to "finish the job".

MM I did enjoy this XT5 review. My family, in the 50's & 60's was a Cadillac family (for Mom). I always enjoyed them but never owned one. Like you, I have a list a mile long of cars I've owned including several Pontiacs (including my current '67 GTO). But, if I could afford it, I'd certainly consider the XT5 to replace my wife's aging 2003 Chrysler T&C minivan (85K miles only). Yes, your review of this vehicle "wow'd" me. From a design style, I would go with the new Cadillac XT5 over the new Lexus RX, the RX front overhang is a lot, also the interior of the RX seems more like premium than luxury, like the new XT5, but to be honest customers buying these types of vehicles (luxury 2 row fwd based CUVs), Cadillac looks like it has 2 CUVs in one with that trick awd system, if true that it sends more power to the rear wheels when in awd mode, Cadillac should talk that up, like I said before, in this segment the Jeep Grand Cherokee owns this market and with Maserati Ghibli platform being used to spend off a SUV the Levante, why could Cadillac not do something similar with the ATS/CTS (Alpha platform) or maybe CT6 (Omega platform), they did it with the 1st gen SRX (Sigma platform), also for the CTS and STS, because fwd based compete with fwd based vehicles not rwd, guess this will stay Cadillac's number 1 selling vehicles, but did Cadillac miss a huge opportunity, beside would you think Cadillac wants to get more capacity from Cadillac's platforms (Alpha and Omega), leave fwd based vehicles too Buick or the other GM brands, Cadillac needs to be all rwd based, why now more than ever, because BMW and Mercedes have fwd based models in the US market now, something that was though unthinkable years ago, people are buying logo now, I remember when luxury meant luxury, the new gen Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XT5 are GM’s best 1 to 2 punch ever to go up against Lexus 2 best sellers (the ES and RX), note in theory Lincoln could put a similar awd system on an updated MKX, Land Rover, Ford and GM have this awd system available, the MKX V6 2.7 turbo with this awd system could be a problem for Cadillac, the XT5 needs a more powerful option engine

+José Luis Celorio Carmona Tough call . . . the XT5 starts at US$40,000. The car you see in the film is low 50s. The Platinum is US$63,000 - but that is all in. Really depends on your priorities. For US$63,000, I believe that would push me to a mildly optioned Macan or Cayenne - but my priorities are driving dynamics . . . So fully realize that answer does not fit all people because the equipment levels on each would be VERY different.

Moto Man, Great review. I would like to say that the XT5 could have be slightly more defined in the rear like other SUV's on the market today. More of a bullet style look like the Jaguar F-Pace. They should of widen it a bit more as well giving an aggressive look, maybe adding a front spoiler of some sort like on the 2017 Volvo XC90 R-design. I currently drive a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit with a HEMI engine and I'm researching all SUV's for 2017 as my lease will be expiring then. Like I said in part 1 of your review, I would like for Cadillac to offer a better more aggressive style of the XT5 with a supercharge/turbo engine. Maybe like Mercedes is doing with the new GLC 43 AMG. An all-wheel drive rear bias vehicle would have been a better choice for this XT5. We want more than just a baby buggy minivan engine style of SUV. Maybe Cadillac needs to offer this if they want to get a younger demographic into the showrooms or even those like myself (midlife crisis) that want to buy a Cadillac CTS-V but can't because.......beast of a car. Not to say I don't like the XT5 but just saying please Cadillac give buyers more choices of engines on the XT5.

The only thing keeping me from considering ANY Cadillac is Cue. I've driven multiple models - both ATS and CTS - and it's just so annoying. Car play may help, but with vehicle controls/functions it's terrible.

I just don't care for crossover vehicles. They don't tow all that much, they don't have a ton more room inside compared to a car, you just sit up higher and they aren't great off road. I would rather buy a full size SUV or a car over a vehicle that's a jack of all trades and master of none.

what about cabin quietness and rough road riding??we own the 2011lincoln mkx and loved it but Lincoln change the 2016 mkx to a small ugly car. Lincoln has been kicked out of the race.we have our eyes on the Lexus rx350 sport because of the looks, large dash cam, safety cam views, quiet cabin power, , and luxury riding.this car is nice as well but we don't know how well it ride on very rough roads, if the cabin is quiet,if it ride very very nice on the highway, or if it really rides like a luxury car.

I prefer the Lexus RX interior and exterior. To me this still reminds me too much of a GM productvas oppose to a luxury offering. The interior reminds me of the new Malibu. Great interior but not luxury interior. For a $60k suv i expected a better offering. The $39k offering is fwd and a stripper. The real starting price is around $50+k and at that price i would actually take the Lincoln offering over this.

No naturally aspirated high output engine will make torque at 2500rpm. You'd need forced induction to get peak torque that low in the rev range. As far this car vs the RX, this wins hands down. The RX is now one of the ugliest SUV on the road and the infotainment interface is cumbersome. I think this new XT5 is a great new SUV although the XC90 can be had for similar money if you need the extra space. Both appeal more to me than the RX or any of the German competition.

A tow rating of 3,500 ibs. about the weight of a Sea Ray 180. But, NO Cadillac driver would be seen in a Sea Ray 180. Typical Cadillac dumb.My fully loaded 2005 SRX had less options than my daughter-in-laws Chevy Trailblazer at half the cost. I've switched to Porsches and I'm very satisfied. My Cayennes tow even better than the Escalades I have owned.

An awkward disconnect with the CarPlay/Android Auto and the Qi wireless charging. You have to plug the phone in for all capabilities in the infotainment, so why not just charge through the USB also? This seems like a total waste of time/space. Also, the way the cable can't retract into the console when you sit the phone back down seems really bothersome too. Disappointed with the thought put into that center console, it looks unappealing, bland, and I would argue isn't designed intelligently.

Why does this have different modes? It's a boring, wrong-wheel drive, mommy-mobile. The woman is never going to use those modes so it's just pointless. it's there to tick a box on the spec sheet when comparing it to an X5 or some shit.
