2017 Cadillac XT5 Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Why did Cadillac decide to make a mid-sized FWD crossover like the Lexus RX instead of a RWD BMW X3 fighter? Because Lexus sells twice as many RX 350s as BMW sells X3s. While the XT5 is not as much fun to drive as the X3 or the new Q5, the Cadillac delivers more passenger room, more cargo room and a standard V6 engine for the same kind of cash. No wonder Cadillac's latest crossover has outsold the German competition over the last 6 months.
The real question of course is: does the new Caddy have what it takes to beat Lexus at their own game, or the stiff competition from Lincoln?

    4000 Miles into my 2018 XT5 I have to say I am very impressed by the overall quality, comfort, fuel mileage, and endless neat features. Fun to drive, get compliments all the time on the XT5 looks in dark metallic Harbor Blue with Maple interior...Bose Centerpoint 14 speaker sound system is fantastic - cannot think of anything I do not really enjoy, maybe a little bit small cargo space with rear seats up (formerly and still have GMC Acadia Denali -larger cargo area & 3 seats) Interested in the XT4 coming up, but a four-banger even with a turbo is just not enuf in my opinion...GM needs to put some Performance in their Crossovers & SUV's like Dodge has done...maybe a smallblock LS with a twin turbo ? Love the XT5.

    We own both and they are both great cars. There's absolutely no need for so much hate. I'd say that the biggest difference is that the RX drives like a bigger car and its cabin feels a lot roomier, but the XT5 is quieter and has a more refined interior. Both are awesome though.

    I bought a lightly used 2018 premium luxury and my wife and I love it! We liked it better than Audi Q5, BMW, Acura RDX, Infiniti and Volvo. It is a pleasure to drive and very comfortable. The V6 is much better than 4cy turbo in my opinion. The XT5 is a very capable vehicle and is a top safety pick.

    I love my XT5 if you have not text drove a Cadillac before I am telling you to TRY go take a test drive and I am telling you the Cadillac XT5 will blow your mind you will love it! My friends Karen an Russ where always Lexus buyers since I have known them which I have always tried to get them to try a cadillac they wouldn't funny long long long time I've been friends with them for 20 years and I could not get them off Lexus finally they did and bought a SRX because they finally saw how their Lexus's at all around 80 to 90,000. All had engine problems the cams all would start leaking Plus other issues with the Lexus's through out they have it in the shop all the time now they finally gave Cadillac a try and love it it is their favorite car they have ever owned and I am here to tell you they where absolutely believers in Toyota and Lexus until finally they tried the SRX which they hated to admitt to me but they did and said The Cadillac is their favorite car they have ever owned and they are getting ready to buy another car so they drove my XT five and trading the Lexus RX 350 for the Cadillac XT five because how happy they are with the SRX they know my XT five and lock that even more they said they don't know how it could get any better be Cadillac but just driving my xt5 they are very excited about trading their other car which is the Lexus RX 350 fit the XT 5 so now they will have 2 Cadillac's So if you are thinking of getting a new crossover and I've never tried a Cadillac I am here to tell you do yourself a huge favor and go test drive one you will love the XT5

    I must say…I was surprised to hear Alex’s thoughts on the Celestiq towards the end. Having grown up on the early days of Alex on Autos and watched since before I could even drive, the moments that have stood out to me from this channel and the ones I remember most are of Alex reviewing the Hyundai Genesis and Kia K900 and appreciating them for the value proposition they offer, even in the luxury segment, and genuinely posing the question to viewers of why they were buying a luxury car and how much the badge is really worth. Not to mention an impassioned clip during the Cadillac CTS V-Sport review arguing that people should care less about parts sharing between related brands. I get that the Celestiq/Bentley/Rolls Royce are in a whole other echelon of the car market entirely, but still did strike me as uncharacteristic of the Alex I’ve come to know.

    Wow... this is the 2nd Caddy in a row that, on paper at least, seems quite interesting. That's after years of what I consider mediocrity from Cadillac. That new Caddy sedan has a lot going for it too IMHO, for example that 4-banger with 250+ HP and torque. But with the XT5, you had my attention til we started talking price. What an unfortunate choice by GM to set such a high price point. How do they not know to set a lower price point for the first year of a new car model, to get people interested? The XT5 packs a lot of goodies in it, and to me it can easily rumble with the likes of Lexus, Volvo and Jeep. Not bad for a 1st-year GM car. But I agree with Alex, the price really takes it out of the running vs the competition. Pity!

    Alex, I have a bit more additional info wrt the torque vectoring of this car. A lot of reviewers of this vehicle missed the peculiar of this AWD and you brought this up and cross mentioning it with Honda/Acura SH-AWD. I am extremely interested in AWD system because I want to find out why Subaru and Land Rover AWD are so superior than the rest and SH-AWD is among the better one. Here is what I found. Please verify as well. The patent for SH-AWD has expired. Swedish AWD OEM GKN has a design very close to SH-AWD which has torque vectoring. In our traditional Detriot 2, Ford collaborated with GKN to install a version of GKN's AWD in their 2016 Focus RS. It is suppose to be a marvel - great in snow/ice condition and performance in turning around corner. GM/Cadillac is the next Detriot 2 to place a similar GKN AWD in one of their new vehicle. That vehicle is what you are test driving here, my friend. I am very surprise you somehow able to link the driving experience with SH-AWD. You are good - one of the best reviewers around.

    Hi Sorcerer Stone, do you know if AWD system used in XT5 is exactly same as AWD system used in 2017 Acadia Denali (not the all-terrain trim) ? Do you have a link to online resource for Specifications of this AWD system? I was interested in details of AWD system used in 2017 Acadia Denali......how much power can it send to rear axle , how much maximum to any single wheel etc.

  • @sorcererstone3303

    @sorcererstone3303

    7 жыл бұрын

    I highly doubted Acadia Denali model you mentioned uses GKN AWD. I would have known. I am a AWS hawk:) I think it has to do with reworking the under frame and cross license fee. There is a 3rd vehicle using this AWD system from Detriot. That is 2017 Lincoln MKZ (Note: AWD in Ford Fusion is not GKN, it is the regular Ford Intelligence AWD which share same general design from another Swedish company Ford gained access to when it owned Volvo. Some Audi also use this AWD, ie. Audi has a few AWD which are sourced from 3rd parties). How do you like your Denali? I am a Ford guy but I owned 2 GM vehicles before.

  • @koolkan86

    @koolkan86

    7 жыл бұрын

    2017 Acadia Denali is pretty nice actually, fun-to-drive due to nice tuning of it's 6-speed tranny with newer(more powerful) LGX 310 hp engine and yet pretty smooth during normal driving. I (also Redline reviews) found 2017 Acadia much fun-to-drive than XT5. Typically one would think with 8-gears in XT5 v/s 6 in Acadia, XT5 would be more fun, but for some reason it is not. May be 6-speeds make LGX engine rev higher most of the time, and high torque is only available at higher RPMs. That makes me wonder what would be the driving exp. like when Acadia uses the new GM 9speed tranny and with 9 speed MPGs are expected to increase only by 2% apparently :)

  • @koolkan86

    @koolkan86

    7 жыл бұрын

    I don't stay in area where I get to test Acadia's AWD system much, but if you check Acadia forums, folks seems to point that 2017 Acadia uses GKN system as well. So it would be interesting to know if this systems works almost same as XT5. Dealerships don't have any details on it's AWD system, nor is there any online resource for it. So was hoping either Alex or someone here has more details :)

    Good feedback. Good to hear actual user feedback for their experience. I think you hit a nerve point. From what I gather, higher speed transmissions in Grand Cherokee, Acura MDX, Mercedes etc have problems. The consensus is the gear jumps. So you don't really utilize the full extend of multiple gear benefits to smooth the ride and increase fuel economy. Some people actually prefer lower gearing transmission like the GM/Ford 6 speed better. Personally I prefer low torque availability at lower speed. Are you sure GM is going to put their new (GM/Ford) 9 speed in Acadia in the future? I think the upcoming 9 speed transmission (GM/Ford) is for car. Truck & SUV are going to get 10 speed like F150. Next Mustang is an odd ball getting 10 speed. I am glad Acadia uses GKN. Lucky you!

I know the lights vary by option group, but you could report on the options that you get. Its tough to get a demo ride at night and some of your more dottering (Ahem!) fans would appreciated the feedback from a standardized real world test.You do bring a lot to the table and are much appreciated for your knowledge base. I disagree about the interior in this Caddy being nicer than the the Jeep GC SUmmit with the Signature leather upgrade. With the upgrade, the GC Summit feels as luxurious as a Range Rover Sport or XC90. You can still see the cheaper plastics in this Cadillac's interior. Much less so in the GC. The leather quality on Overland and above is very high and softer than the standard leather in MB and BMW's. I think the Jeep's "non-luxury" brand is creating biases leading people to assume that a GC Summit is a "near luxury" vehicle. To be honest, though my choice in this segment is the XC90.

    Understood, but since Cadillac appears to be going RWD as a differentiation from the rest of GM, it seemed probable that either the platform would go to RWD, or it would be rebadged at some point.

    If this is really a rebadged Equinox - that's a shame. I came away from the Caddy's design thinking it appears blocky, especially up front with the high hood line and squared off nose, something I felt the prior version suffered from as well as bulk. Did this XT5 Caddy lose any weight? Caddy prices are beginning to rise to the point where I'd find it difficult to choose one over a German rival. $70k+ for this Ute? I'd consider a larger BMW, like an X5 diesel or turbo straight 6. The Jeep diesel has over 400 ft. lbs of torque. I saw an upper level trim vehicle with leather and piping and it's very nice. It also rides well but you can feel it's weight in the standard 6 cylinder. Both the X5 and the Jeep GC are slated for a redesign. I'd wait to see how they reveal themselves. The new Q5 is still small inside but its construction reveals Audi quality and the platform is much lighter than the prior version. Their new electronic dash is a cool feature. The Lincoln still reminds me of an old man's car with its huge, nose heavy look. But it's a good deal with the turbo 6. I'd skip the Volvo - they're heavy and unreliable. The Lexus Is very expensive and has a polarizing design. Either you like it or you don't. The Nav is cumbersome but I like the car overall. Caddy should be more competitive with their pricing and still offer an upgraded engine with more power by supercharging this new 6 cylinder perhaps. Not even their overpriced Escalade offers a SC'd V8. They're missing out on bragging rights and stop light wars. Audi's SQ5 will be offering their SC'd V6 though for more money. This was a solid, thorough review.

    Back in the early 2000s when Cadillac started changing their brand image, the cars were very distinctive. Maybe not the most elegant looking luxury cars, but at least distinctive. I feel like with every redesign and new model since the days of the first generation CTS, Cadillac styling has gotten blander and blander. Looking at this XT5, the exterior doesn't look all that premium or luxurious to me. Rather bland and anonymous. Maybe it looks better in person. The same goes for the interior styling. BLAND. The gauge cluster, on the other hand, is a busy mess. Good lord, no one in their 40s+ wants to look at that cluttered digital mess. I'm in my 30's and even i wouldn't want to look at that. Again, maybe it doesn't look as bad in person.
