Awesome Gordon! Every time I ride the RT I love it more and more!

Lol, loved the garage scene. Yes these are awesome bikes. Any bike that makes riding comfortable and gives you one less excuse not to be out there is fine by me. I also happen to love the exhaust note on this bike especially when really getting into the throttle!!

Amen to that! The RT always puts a smile on my face

As I got older, my motorcycle tastes, needs and wants changed. No longer was it a question of how fast can I get there but more importantly, getting there. I agree with you on the question of 'Is it the perfect bike?'. However, it is as close to perfection as my taste, needs and wants can get. The RT, for all the reasons you pointed out, is a fantastic bike but it isn't for everyone. It is just 'The One' for me. 👍👍 Great video!! Thanks for sharing. ps - That video ending, 'Been there, done that'. 😁

I 100% agree. When I first rode it after my XR, the difference in power made me pause for a sec, but as I rode it more and more, I just loved nearly everything about it. I could still throw it around in the twisties and at low speeds but really cruise comfortably when I wanted to. After two hip surgeries, comfort was a ‘Must have’ and this beauty has delivered. my uncle had one of these R1200s and would go through Ortega canyon and would ride with full kitted R1 and CBR1k guys. they couldn't catch him with his wife on the back😂 he recently passed from Covid and bought this bike from my aunt. glad theres still an outlet we both enjoyed to carry tradition. beautiful bike

Thanks for the great feedback and congrats on your RT purchase. You’re going to love it. If you decide on any safety mods, I recommend the Ilium Works engine guards. The look good, work well, and don’t interfere with regular maintenance on the bike! Let us know what you think of it after a little while.

Finding “the one” is a great feeling. It took me 3 other motors to figure that out but I’m finally there. I enjoy the RT so much that when it is time to look at another motor, it will have to be an addition, not a replacement. Thanks for checking out the video. Ride safe!

I've been riding RTs since 1998, and then switched over to GSAs in 2010. Now I'm looking at going back to a used RT....Wonderful bikes !

Both are incredible bikes. If you’re sticking to paved roads, it’s hard to beat the RT. I may be a bit biased though.

Great show! Lol! Love the commentary! Personal and funny with a lot of great insight on the 2017 RT. I love the RT platform. I’ve put many miles on my 2011 and it’s almost time to upgrade! Would love the huge TFT on the new bike, but personally I can’t get over the new ‘face’. I love the halo lights on the 2014-2020. Keep up the great content!

I live and ride in the Sierra Nevada in California and love canyon diving, pass climbing and the every day twisties that I experience on my '18 RT. But, when the bags are loaded up and my pillion is aboard with a couple thousand miles of open road ahead of us is when this bike is at it's best! BTW...Subscribed!

Last year I remember finishing my last day at work before a long ride out to Montana. That ride was what prompted us to start this. And the RT is superb!

It is such a great motorcycle. Truly a “do it all” bike. Thanks for watching and the feedback Pat. It’s a bonus to be able to have some fun while putting these together and knowing other enjoy it.

I have the 2018 version. Nice bike. I came from 10 yrs of Harleys and changed due to transmission issues with the m8. Harley were very good to be fair, even replacing the bike but in the end I moved over to the BMW. I’ve had to buy some bits to make it a bit more comfortable such as a gel seat but the beauty of the bike is it’s ease. You can get it out of the garage and just go for a ride. There’s plenty of power and keeps up with modem traffic no problem. It’s water cooled so no issues over over heating like the air cooled engines. I bought it new so it’s like a friend to me. It’s got bags of personality, although some would disagree. I’ve seen the new version and I’m afraid I don’t like the tft tea tray between the handle bars, I also like the ability to change or not install the sat nave and the Wunderlich electronic lock linked to the central locking is well worth the money to me.

I had the same experience moving from the two Yamahas I had before my S1000XR and now my RT. The BMWs are generally just so well thought out. I do like the new TFT display on the new RT but I’m not a fan of the new beak for the bike. LEDs are nice but it looks very plastic-like. Plus I’m hearing some of the 1250s are having valve issues. For now, I’ll stick with the RT but I am considering adding an off-road bike, like the new 850 GS. Thanks for checking out the video and chatting. Ride safe.

Great film. Very amusing. I'm getting old and while I love my R1200R I have to find some creature comforts for long highway rides. Not crazy about the RT's looks but I'm trying to convince myself it's all about the riding experience. Your film encouraged me. Best wishes!

Thanks for the nice words and checking out the channel. When I first starting looking at the RT I wasn’t sure on the looks either but it’s interesting how it quickly grew on me. Probably more so after riding it, which definitely combines comfort and motorcycling fun. Enjoy the ride, whatever motor you decide on.

I think it all comes down to the type of riding you’re going to do. If you’re constantly off the beaten path, the RT might not be the best option. But for mostly paved adventures looking for comfort on long freeway stretches or hitting the twisties, the RT is superb. Thanks for checking out the channel!

Same here. For off road adventures, I’m intrigued by the new 850 GS.

Thinking of this being my first boxer - had a k1200 but didn’t get on with the front end, though loved the lack of fork dive. I’m late fifties and want a good perch for riding - something grown up ( not interested in badassery anymore lol) that has some character. Looks like this might be the bike. Loved the light feel to your video 😊 All the best from the 🇬🇧

@mihai: I am in ny mid 60´s and riding BMW´s since 1978. My fist one was a R45 with 27 hp, the second, third and countless in between always the R1000RS with 70 hp and the last RS was a 60 hp late 90´s model. Then the shift came to the 2008 R1200RT air cooled, 2012 then the new engine R1200RT and since 2018 on the R1200RT LC. I don´t know where you live but if you are in a hurry you can go to the end of the scale without any trouble to make some distance in a short time if required. She does not give you a hard time with the weight and you do not feel the 500 lbs /270 kg. I am glad that all the features are loaded. ABS and ASC where never activated as I could manage the braking and the acceleration within the limits and so all the electronic stuff is there if my mind is not where it shuld be, just in case. I am riding all year around, from 38°F / above 3°C when the possibility of frost is reduced and no salt is on the pavement as the corrosion is biting on the bikes metal. On the other side I had not hot oil anymore as in the past when the temperature was above 35°C / 95°F. With the air cooled engine behind a car in idle power the you could see the oil temperture rising significantly. That is not the case with the LC, the water temperature goes up but the engine stays at the lower level. After more then 20.000 mls / 30.000 km I can say: no regrets at all. It runs like all the BMW´s I´ve owned before and when I visited the BMW dealer unscheduled it was more forced by curiosity to find another add on and not due to a breakdown. That remembers me back in 1978 when I asked some riders when the worked on their Moto Guzzi, Kawaski and Honda before they went out for a ride: What bike can I select that I can use but do not work half the week to ride on the weekend: All three guys turned at me and stated: Buy a BMW, it is expensive but it lasts a long time. They where right, the beginning of a long lasting relation commenced...... My next bike could be the R1250RT LC. Why ? ..... why not as long as health permitts. Good luck with your search, it depends how much you ride in a year, maybe a pre-owned would do as well. The best saving is money you do not spend.

Perfect bike for me. Mine is a 2018. Pretty much the same options as you and same color. Amazing bike. Only issue I have had with it is: I have become a bmw snob. No joke.

It’s just such a good bike. Just a couple weeks ago I took it on a 9-day, 6 State trip through all kinds of weather and it handled perfectly. Only thing that happened was the headlamp burnt out. The engine guards are Ilium Works engine guards. 2014-2015 was their redesign with the wet clutch and liquid cooling. I’d start sometime after that. If you go new, they have a really slick new TFT display with GPS included. No longer after market. 2019/2020 I think came out with the 1250cc models which are much quicker. But I love my 2017 and it’s great to ride on long trips and in the twisties. @@ron_grimes the new TFT display is really intriguing but I’m not completely sold in the style of the mew RT. The upgraded LEDs in the headlights are nice but the shape of them looks a bit “plasticy” (is that a word). I certainly like the rider comforts of the newer RTs and ACC might be nice but I really wonder if I’d use it. I use CC but only when the riding affords it. If I’m in traffic, I want control. We have blind spot monitoring in our car, which is nice, but I wonder if having to bring my eyes down at flashing lights all the time would prove to be a bit too distracting. I do agree that 2017-2018 are prime years for the RT

I own a R1200 RT. I frefer the previous model. Headlights look better and i think this bike doesn’t need vissible frame tubes.

I would like 2014 but I don't think I will fit in the budget. does anyone have any good advice on what to look for when buying?. what is the difference between those two models? is it worth buying 2014 and going in torn underpants? where BMW RT-s clutch disengages at beggining or at the end?

Great vid and quick question: I'm 68 and buying an identical RT this coming week, to yours. Has all the bells and whistles and I'm thinking I'm going to get horribly confused by all the options and knobs and buttons on the switchgear including the left side rotary knob thing. Are these controls pretty user friendly or a mess to try and operate and remember? Thanks much.

Hey Frank, thanks for watching. The control cluster looks more confusing than it really is. Really it comes down to the menu button and then the fly wheel. Press the menu button to get to the system category type you want, then use the flywheel to look at the options in that category. It becomes pretty intuitive after playing with it for a bit. Also, there’s a Diamond icon and that is your favorites setting. So you can press that to get to your most commonly used settings, like grip and seat heaters. I find the most complicated thing to actually be the radio setting when you want to search and set radio/satellite radio frequencies. But you do that when you’re stopped so really the rest of it is simple and easy to do on the fly (ha ha, see what I did there?). Bottom line, it’s a great ride!

Thing that scares me about my new purchase is that I just sold my low mileage mint condition 2006 RT and it had ESA...ABS...heated everything and cruise. Controls were simple to use and bomb proof. This 2017 RT I'm looking at has every conceivable option you could throw at it and being an older guy now...I worry about reliability and my ability to understand everything. Doubt I'll ever even use the stereo or bluetooth crap.

@@frankcastle5294 I get the hesitation. I’ve had no problems with my 2017 RT and the controls really do become quite intuitive. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the ride!

you can short shift 1-2 abd 2-3 on quickshift and not too bad, the big boxer has enough torque to shift at 1000 rpms.

I'm looking at purchasing a used RT around this year. I was wondering what kind wind protection your hands have? Does the fairing keep the wind off or is highly recommended to have good riding gloves with this bike?

The fairing does a pretty good job of providing wind protection. Anything below 45 degrees and it’s nice to have a good set of gloves. I have a pair of Alpine Star insulated wind stopper gloves that work well, especially with the grip heaters on. They are not too thick either. Light rain is deflected with the fairing too. Anything colder than that or with more rain and I’d get a thicker set of gloves.

@@kylepayne9657 it’s tough to beat the Goldwing and K1600 for long distance comfort, but the RT gets close and has the flick-ability in the corners and at slow speed that is a ton of fun. It all depends on the type of riding you want to do and what fits you best and that’s all that matters...what puts a smile on your face! Thanks for the comment and checking out the video.

I just got a k1600GTL and loving it, but still nervous at every stop because I have a bad wrist and seems to be a tittle to heavy. If lose balance I know I will not be able to keep it up. Considering to trade it for a R1200RT, but only if is almost as good as the K16GTL. Have you ridden a K1600 before and your thoughts? Pros and cons?

That’s a tough call. I haven’t ridden the k1600, just took a seat on it. While comfortable, I wanted something that was a bit lighter and I could throw around easily while still maintaining comfort, which is why I went with the RT. Certainly being able to keep the bike upright at low speeds is important and I would imagine your wrist issue doesn’t help. If you’re thinking about an RT, I’d take a test ride. The boxer engine is super torque and smooth, but will feel different than the 1600, which I think has more top end power. That being said, the 1250 RT is pretty quick and I would expect to see a 1300 RT in the future following the release of the 1300 GS. That might get the power close to the feel of the 1600. I would say, as with any bike, that if you love the K1600, stick with it for a little bit before making a switch. You may find over time your riding style adapts to the bike and your wrist issue, making it a non issue. Ride safe!

Does the electronic display show miles per hour - does it show the speed you’re going on the bike? I’m just not clear about that.

@@pippipster6767 that’s a good question and I wish I had an answer for you but my bike hasn’t hit that km mark to say. Historically the boxer engines are really reliable. I did have to replace my front shock/strut unexpectedly and it was pricey…$2,500 US dollars. But that’s been the only anomaly. I still love the bike

@@pippipster6767 for me I would have to know/see the service history, see the condition of the bike like you mentioned, go through all of the electronics and have mechanic take a look at it. If those checked out, I’d consider it. To be fair, low miles on any used vehicle purchase is a priority for me. But if the price is right and you’re handy mechanic-wise, it’s a great bike.

Is it the perfect bike? Yes.

Great Vid! Though I have to say I'm sticking with my K1600 GTL! Same comfort, Ergo's, Electrics and a Crap Stereo when riding over 60mph.. as the RT's but with a Face melting, Apocalyptical Acceleration! .. Even after a couple of years this bike still scares me sometimes.. lol

No doubt the 1600 has great acceleration. I like the RT for the light 600lb tourer it is and the flick-ability (is that a word?) of it when hitting the corners. The important thing is the 1600 puts a smile on your face, the only real requirement of any motorcycle. Thanks for checking out the channel. Ride safe!

You came from more of a sporty bikes. Why did you choose this and not a k16gt?

It came down to a couple things (maybe three…or four). I wanted something that was nimble and that could be ridden a bit like a sport bike. The K16 is super fast, but I didn’t feel like I would be able to throw it around like the RT. I wanted it to be comfortable and capable of being long rides (much longer than I’d ever done) but still versatile as an everyday bike. A couple hip surgeries sort of necessitated a bike where I didn’t have to lean over too much. The seated position on the RT just fit. Cost played a part too. By no means is the RT cheap, but it is less than the K16. And I have to be honest, motorcycles evoke serious emotions and personality connections for their riders and I just couldn’t see myself riding what I felt was the “Goldwing” of BMW. That’s not to say it’s not a great bike, because it surely is. I see the K16 as something I might ride in the future, just not yet.

You say the best sport touring but from every review I read people complain about the head buffeting it feels like a sucking you in towards the windscreen you forgot to mention that. I went by a bike if you have to do it all the head buffeting that's a nightmare trying to Ride like that

Hey Thomas, I didn’t talk about wind buffeting because I haven’t experienced that on my RT. To be fair, I’m only 5’9” so perhaps it is an issue for taller riders. I actually have the opposite issue in that the wind protection is so good, I have to drop the windscreen way down on hot days to get more airflow. If you check out our Zion road ride videos, we rode in warm weather, windy weather, rain, and snow and the RT did great in all of that. Just my two cents. Thanks for checking out the video.

I'm 6 foot tall and don't experience head wobbling buffeting on my '17 RT. With the screen all the way up you don't get any pressure on your shoulders pushing you back, so the pressure on your back is different. As the screen goes down you can get a little wind on your helmet to cool your bean, or some on your shoulders to push you back, or all the way down to cool you off. I have had to rethink my riding jackets because the RT fairing blocks a lot of cooling wind. Also, gas mileage suffers at high speeds when the windscreen is all the way up--it is like pushing a refrigerator down the road.

I know the Goldwing is a champ on the long trips. I’ve taken the RT on several multi-state trips and it’s been comfortable and tons of fun when hitting the twisties on those trips. That’s what has stood out to me. Thanks for checking out the video.

Going to have to respectfully disagree Bobby. Really enjoy the flick-ability of the RT. It might not be the fastest, but it’s a kick in the pants in the twisties. But I can definitely see the appeal of the 1600 for long trips. Thanks for watching.

@@clutchtreks8311 i bet if we each had one bike and one had the rt and the other had the k1600GT the person with the GT would win even if we swapped bikes.... the RT is definitely quite a bit lighter which may be an option when im too old to ride this one lol im 48 now but I really dont see any category the RT is superior in.Plus life is too short for only 2 cylinders lol

@@bobbymanning5808 The beauty of riding motorcycles is the feel that it gives you. Each bike has a unique soul and every one of them brings something different to the riding experience. Some good, some bad, some bats$&t crazy. Just like when Aaron sits on his R9T or Earl on his Triumph, it’s about that connection you have to your bike. Having owned a bike with 160hp (S1000xr), I get what it’s like to have that speed at your fingertips. The RT certainly isn’t as fast as the XR or your GT, but every time I hop on do a ride, I’m excited. That’s what it’s all about, a bike for everyone. Im happy you love your GT, you should. I just happen to love the better sport tourer. 😉 Cheers bud!
