2017 BMW 3 Series GT - Road Test Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is aimed at those luxury car buyers who love to hit the road and go long distances with friends and family. The car has been given a midlife makeover and updated mechanicals. So we went road-tripping with it to find out what's what.

It all depends on what compromises you are willing to make. I think the GT with adaptive suspension is better suited for a family or an all round car. But with normal suspension it doesn't quite make sense at all. However, the adaptive suspension brings the ground clearance from 165 to 155 mm which means you can drive it on unpaved roads but not off road. Small SUVs have at least 180mm ground clearance but also shorter wheel base and shorter overall length which makes them do much better on rough surfaces. If you want better aerodynamics and handling than an SUV at the price of much worse off-road capabilities, something like this GT should be the solution. Personally I would've kept the GT with a stiffer suspension and slightly lower the roof with a bit steeper back ( for head room). A stiffer standard suspension makes sense if start from an SUV and want to make it more sporty. Also an antiroll bar and steel engine splash shield should be standard. Another complain is the overall length. 50 to 100mm shorter would make it more suitable for city driving.

Most of your complaints are because of the poorly equipped Luxury trim you drove. I've been driving a 2015 335GT xDrive MSport for over 2 years and few of your complaints exist on it. The soft suspension and lean is solved by the Adaptive M Suspension. Poor brakes? M sport brakes are the same as the M3, just 10mm smaller. HUD? It's an option. Thankfully we don't have the spare in the trunk of US cars. The rear seats are reclined a fair amount, or they can be locked more upright. My 6'3" father sits back there for 1100 miles at a time without complaint. What did I miss? The shades, I don't have a solution for. The frameless windows are the cause of that problem. Anything else?
