2016 Kia Soul EV Review - Why Wait For The Tesla Model 3?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I want to unbox for you one of the best affordable EVs on the market today, the 2016 Kia Soul EV.
If you haven't seen it already, please check out my previous unboxing review of the gasoline-engined Kia Soul which, I believe, is one of the best small crossovers on the market.
• 2016 Kia Soul Review -...
But what about its EV counterpart? Should you buy it instead of the regular Soul? If you want an EV, then yes. The Soul EV has 109 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque and a driving range of 93 miles on a single charge. The Fiat 500e, just to compare, has an 84-mile range. The feature-packed Soul EV isn't available in all 50 US states, but I was still impressed with it nonetheless.
Check out my unboxing review and learn more about one of the best-kept secrets in the EV market.

just purchased a 2016 Kia Soul ev+ with 30k miles on it, so far loving it, its like a comfy go-cart on steroids. good trunk space for a smallish car, i took my neighbors and their son to the airport, it was me, my 5 yr old and 3 adults, 1 large suite case, 3x smaller carry on bags and 3 x backpacks. got all bags into the back (i took out the foam and lowered the 'platform'. car performance was excellent, i did not notice a difference in acceleration or braking ability. I took another friend to the airport the day before, and my power consumption was about the same. The only gripe i have is the navigation...putting in the address if you don't "dot your i's and cross your t's" it does not find address or give possible addresses that match, does not accept abbreviations "N" you have to type North....but perhaps there is a setting I need to learn?

It's not just the gas savings - I have a Spark EV and love it, no more service stops. A warrantee covered tire rotation every year or so and that's it, and I'm skipping those. Swapped out an F-150 for the little guy and I'm saving almost 3K a year on gas and lube jobs. Not to mention the time savings, no more waiting around at dealerships, or in line for gas stations. Full tank every morning! Can't wait for my Model 3!

It's awesome. Got myself a Zero SR and replaced my V-Twin for commuting on the HOV. Not a dime spent on maintaining anything in over a year. Any word on the 2017 Kia Soul EV release date? The wife is ready to kick gas also.

Great review, keep it up. We don't have that great sunroof in the UK which is a real shame as it looks great & very functional.

On the used market now for well under $20k w/-10k mi. Time to buy! Oh, just wondering, why would anyone ever buy a v8 mustang? Odd comparison and I assumed everyone figured out by now a pile of broken and or rusted parts in 3-5 years no longer equates to a v8 mustang. No real trade value there and it wont even get you to the store for replacement parts anymore at that point. EV all the way, YEA!!!! (Nice vid, just bustin' ya balls on the stang deal)

Just checking the used market now, this car blows the leaf out of the water in every catagory including price. And as a bonus it dosent look like it was beat with an ugly stick in the 2017 range.

15:53 38k us, that's the price it was back then?! I bought this same model a few weeks ago, second hand for 19k Canadian(including 15% tax ...) (14k us) with 80'000km on the odo. And I love it, especially the moonroof ;-) I think it's a good time now to buy them second hand, unless you need long range ... I don't, I make only 140km during the week for work, and another 140km on the weekend.

I like the simplicity, quietness, instant torque, low maintenance and all of the other advantages of electric cars. But I simply can NOT accept lack of a range buffer in the event that something unexpected happens along my daily journey. It would be like leaving home for work every morning with only 1/6 tank of gas and no practical capability of refueling before I get back home. Sorry - but that just isn't acceptable. The risk of being left stranded - especially in the winter - is just too great. There is one very basic question that EV buyers should seriously contemplate. Would they ever consider buying a gasoline powered car that only had a 3 gallon fuel tank? That is basically what you are buying when you purchase something like a Leaf or this Kia EV.

A few questions, #1 how much buffer do you need? How often do you exceed 90 miles daily driving? If your drive to work is 20 miles you would have almost an hour of extra drive time left in the battery after work, even more if you can destination charge. ( my boss is willing to let me have access to a 120 exterior Outlet in exchange for a few dollars a month , that means I have a full tank after work every day. #2 how fast do you need to recharge? The battery on these is pretty small so if you can find a lvl 2 charger you will get back a decent bump of milage after a hour or so, and with a lvl 3 charger you're back up to 80% after 30 minuets. #3 would you take a car that had a 3 gallon gas tank if magic gnomes refilled it every night while you slept? Seriously, a lot of range anxiety issues tend to go away after the owner gets used to living with an electric car, moreover if it's a super duper Mega emergency that just can't be handled by an electric car it's probably rare enough that you can handle it with Uber and no real consequences to your wallet. #4 I realize it's been a while since this post was made, did you know that while the original Kia Soul was getting 93 miles at the time of this writing the 2020 Kia Soul is being estimated to have 220 miles of range? How much more would you need?

Kia's a fine car; and kudos for their entrance in to the market. However, it's weaker, slower, has less range, less room and less style than the Tesla 3. I'll wait for my Tesla 3.

Like saying why wait for Iphone when you can buy a razor now, they both make phone calls right? Tesla has a charging network now. But guess we could all wait a couple years before getting a kia soul that only goes 98 miles.

Sorry about my bad english. Waiting for the Tesla Model 3 means: by 35000 Cars a Year that Tesla want to build and by 400.000 Cars with reservation, you must wait more then 10 Years if you can drive the Model 3. But Tesla build in the Moment 15000 Cars. Thats a Problem.

  • @carbuzzcom

I don't think you'll have to wait 10 years for the Model 3. Tesla would go broke if that were to happen. Also, Tesla is rapidly increasing production in order to satisfy demand.

+CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars/ ok, than thats 5 Years. Dosnt matter how much Money Tesla have, but 100.000 Cars a Year isnt impossible. But lets see and wait. The Modell 3 is very interessant for me.

Tesla is shooting for 500,000 cars a year. They own an old GM plant in California that's capable of building 500,000/year, and the gigafactory right down the road practically will make enough batteries for over 500K/year. Americans do get first deliveries of them however, so if you're over seas, you may have to wait an extra year, but they are looking into factories in other countries.
