Hyundai Tucson used to be called ix35, which used to be called… Tucson. Launching the second generation of the popular compact SUV Hyundai decided to change the name to ix35 in Europe. ix35 corresponded with the ix-onic concept. The concept was interesting in and out, and the production model looked like a bottom feeder fish. Six years later Hyundai decided Tucson Arizona sounds better, than generic ix35.

    It's also called the "perception of quality", most German manufacturers do it. Admittedly quality feeling interiors, but the mechanicals/electronics (all the important parts) are usually made by the lowest bidder in China....hence why they spend more time at the side of the road than on it.

    Just retired I bought a new, Tucson 2L diesel 2wd in July 2016, with cream interior. It now has 44,000 on the clock and I still love driving this car. Having had company cars for years, the Tucson is one of my favourites . . even with the plastic!

    I drove this Tucson for several days from a rent a car (2.0 MPI FWD, 6AT), Style trim I suppose; it had 8000km, and 225/65R17 rims. It kinda impressed me. I did not expect such a nice car from Hyundai. Beside some hard plastics here and there, the steering wheel feel, and the fake leather on the door cards was nice, seats are comfortable, and seating position is low. I mean in reality is higher than other cars, but you just feel it low. Driving feel was very good, the 2.0 N/A engine had quite a punch (not on par with Mazda engine, but almost there), and the automatic gearbox was very fast and responsive, despite missing the driving modes button. Steering was beautiful, and would just “push” you to drive faster. Tires grip would be lost progressively, and the grip in general was very easy to “guess” and maintain. Very good for the OEM Hankook tires (as usual), with good threadwear (560). I compare this car to the Mazda CX-5, that I’ve had for about a year (also 2.0 AT FWD), and I just feel this Tucson is the better car of the two. Mazda was nice in many things, but the gearbox always seemed to struggle finding the correct gear when drove on winding roads (where the Tucson had almost no problem with it), and I can’t say the plastics were that much better. If I was to choose, I would go for a Tucson any day. But than is probably the way the cars age, which in case of ix35 was not that nice. The plastics and trims would destroy fast, and I would just not buy such car. I hope this generation of Tucson holds itself better over time.

    Tucson is by far the best looking SUV in the market as of right now. HONDA, TOYOTA, KIA and the rest of them are straight up OLD LOOKING CAR that your GRANDMA drives lol. when you buy a car the first thing people look for is the appearance/how fuel economic it is and interior.

    My view to the Korean Skoda: Nice T-shirt and cool music and nice image editing at 5:51. Nice hint too at 3:14 "let the hate begin" - pronounced so specially that it should occurre to everybody: we are talking just about cars, just about some vehicles, some pieces of mechanics, there should never be any reason for any hate, yeah!

    One of your criticisms is that when you mute the volume, turn off the ignition, then turn back on the car, the volume is on again and will wake up the kids? Seriously? Maybe try hitting that little knob that powers off the stereo instead of hitting mute, genius. There... problem solved. Next.

    Not true. You can turn off the stereo and the stereo only by simply pressing on the stereo volume knob on the center console. It does not affect the navigation... unless south korea is playing a special trick on Poland and not the U.S..

    I payed for my Tucson and I'll have the car on this Friday. Checking the reviews and the tech specs I am happy with my choice. First of all, I'm from Romania - I saw that there are differences in price on various markets, here both had roughly the same price for the same engine and trim. Second, maybe it's worth mentioning that I'm moving from the first time on a diesel car, I own now a Chevrolet Cruze 2013 1.8 petrol engine (140 HP) and I'm happy about it, I just wanted something bigger, with permanent all wheel drive and with the better traction/torque that the diesel has over the petrol engines. So, I had the following to choose from: Subaru Forester, Skoda Kodiaq, Ford Kuga, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. These were the models that made it to the shortlist, originally I checked out Volkswagen Tiguan, Mitsubishi L200, Mitsubishi ASX, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan X-trail. In my country, all these cars range from 28000 EUR up to 34000 EUR. X-Trail and L200 are not as appealing as the previous models, ASX does not impress me at all and I find Tiguan to be expensive when it comes to what it offers for the money that you have to pay for. Also, it has the exact issue that Kodiaq has. With these cars out of the list, I checked the remaining ones. Forester misses on looks (for me it looks like a funeral car), is more expensive for the same trim and has things that you can't even add (standard packages) and it comes with a 2.0 147 HP engine. Dropped. CR-V is missing too on the looks, but has a good trim and nice interior and tech. Kinda under-powered engine and has the same price as the Forester. Dropped. Kuga is so-so. Not ugly, not beautiful, same looks like in the 90's. Lowest ground clearance. Weird packages forcing you to buy things that you don't want. With all that you want and matching the others - same price as Forester or CR-V. Dropped. Sportage is fuglish (front and interior) and it is in may ways a copy of Tucson. Dropped. With the remaining Tucson and Kodiaq I went for test drives, checked and re-checked tech specs, trims and went into an in-depth research for both the cars and the buy options. Kodiaq - nice materials, nice interior, big trunk, a lot of passenger space, big car all around, looks good and shows good quality. on the downside, 190 HP 2.0 diesel engine available only with the DSG gearbox (same issue with Tiguan), could not find a color that I really like on the car, about 20 weeks until the car can be delivered, 6000 EUR more expensive than the Tucson. Tucson - materials are OK (cheaper than the Kodiaq, could be better, but not bad), nice interior (I like better the dashboard and it quite resembles the one from my current car, aspect that I really enjoy), sufficient trunk space (less thank Kodiaq, but the car is shorter), good passenger space (I'm married, 2 kids), looks great (best from the list). I like it on pretty much any color, was available on white and it was ready to be delivered in a few days. Price 28000 EUR (Kodiaq was 34000 EUR). As I really hate leather seats (I like suede, but it's not reliable, you cannot find it anymore and with kids, temperate climate, mud, snow and the pretty normal food and drink little accidents, I rather not. Alcantara is synthetic and I don't like it), I don't like panoramic rooftop, automatic trunk opening takes ages, driving mode does not really make a difference on this car, BSD and a few other features are not interesting me, plus you can buy this only as package, called Luxury and charged about 4000 EUR extra, plus there was a problem with the car availability - supposed to wait till it got here - I went for the premium package. I'll be back with more info, if you like, once I will have some experience with the car. I watched some of your videos, like many others here I like the way you're presenting things. Two ideas - I searched for Tucson review on bad weather, both off road and at higher speed, with automatic all wheel drive system coming in and found nothing. For SUVs with AWD, people may be interested in this, you could look into it. The second idea - heads on comparing cars, actually putting cars side by side, so that people can actually see live (or put them by editing the material) differences. All in all, nice material, glad to share my thoughts with you. Keep it up!

    Funny how you mentioned you wanted "something bigger, with permanent all wheel drive". Tucson like CR-V doesn't have a permanent all wheel drive: it's a clutch based drive that engages rear wheels automatically once slip is detected. Only Subaru from all the ones you mentioned has a permanent 4 wheel drive, and it's one of the best ones out there.

    Great review, better than many others for this car. The main dashboard plastic in front is softer as are the door tops and armrests. Plenty of BMW X1s have hard plastics dotted about but these are overlooked. Its only ever a problem for Far Eastern makes...Give me hard plastics but reliability any day over soft touch and problems with DSG, TSI chains etc etc. How often do we all massage a dashboard when we drive? I certainly don't.

    You're right, we don't. But it's hard elements, which amplify other sounds. As far as TSI chains are concerned, you're talking about early 1.4 engines. I did hear some stories about DSG issues, my parents drive a Tiguan Mk1 FL with DSG TSI, never had a problem with it. Although service does leave something to be desired. If it's long time reliability you're after I guess Honda CR-V is a safe bet. Looks like shit, but drives better, and has better interior than the new Tucson.

    Agree, when you dropped the key in that tray - wow that sounded cheap. But it looks great! Honda rear end is awful but i won't see it when i'm driving. Saw a vid review of Tucson in the US and that had soft fake leather wrap to the instrument binacle. Looked much better. Not so here in the UK version. Are you reviewing the Seat Ateca soon ?

    The 2016 has one of the quietest interiors in the segment, which you failed to mention, but most other reviewers recognize. You may have driven one of the cheaper models of the 2016 Tucson since you insulted Hyundai by refusing one of their earlier versions due to exterior design (a little arrogant are we?). My 2016 Tucson Limited uses soft plastic everywhere that matters. Why don't you take the decibel reading at a given RPM in the Tucson, CX-5, X3, and Tiguan and let us know the results. I guarantee you the Tucson wins because I test-drove all of those models. The Tucson is easily the quietest with the best sound in the segment. You are clearly biased against Hyundai.

    Here in the UK they have stopped selling the 1.6 petrol turbo which you say is better than the 2.0 diesel turbo, how is the turbo petrol to drive in terms of the 7 speed dct over the 6 speed auto of the 2.0. I say this as used petrols are starting to appear so I'm looking to get one

    Had the 2L 187bhp diesel auto on hire. I don't understand why he says it's slow. The one I had was like a rocket in sport mode. A little bit scarey at times to be honest. Almost over powered. And the rest of the dash is all soft touch spongy plastic, apart from the bit above the instruments. I thought it was a fantastic vehicle, powerful, comfortable, spacious, and lovely to look at.

    In my opinion, the Hyundai is a more reliable car than the VW, if you compare the top of the range Hyundai Tucson Premium SE to a VW with all the specification on the Hyundai, that VW would cost twice as much as the Hyundai, plus Hyundai gives a unique 5 years unlimited mileage warranty on the Tucson, Stop complaining, it's not a Rolls Royce, a Bentley or a Luxury SUV, it represents a very good Value for the price, and that's the crucial aspect that you seem to forget. plus it looks good from every angle,

    Hi! I am about to buy a Tucson but my only doubt is the engine Hyundai Tucson 1.7 CRDI ISG I want a "normal" fast car but I have never had a diesel engine 86-116 ( kw-hp). my question to all is: does this engine feel good in this car? do you have the kick/speed you need? I have kids so I dont need 200 kn/h but 160 :)

    Reviewers can say whatever they want. Did you even mention the outstanding BlueLink system? The bottom line is the Tucson exterior design + overall value for dollar spent far exceeds all other CUVs in its category. This is a no brainer if you care anything about money.

    It is odd how these reviewers praise Mazda and criticize every detail on Hyundai. I have the opposite opinion of Mazda vs Hyundai... and I own both. I hate the way the new CX-5 drives! All these reviewers seem to follow the same script.

    Marek Drives Well, here in India compared to other cars in the price bracket like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour (or called Everest some places), Skodas etc. Honestly, this is the first video I am seeing someone complain about this. I thought Europe had all black interiors but black and beige in Poland just like here :)

    You can choose between black or beige interior. AFAIK different car companies have different policies regarding different markets. This means lower quality and/or completely different models for some markets. Things like Ford Everest don't exist in Europe. Some cars made specifically for the US market (VW Passat for example) tend to have lower quality interiors, than those made in Europe for European market. I've also tried some cars designed with the Far East in mind (Mitsubishi Mirage/Space Star, Suzuki Celerio), and although they are rated very high in India, I would rate them mediocre by European standards. After this lengthy explanation I think Hyundai makes more or less the same Tucson globally (different infotainment in the US I think), which may be very good by Indian standards, average by European standards. Interestingly enough KIA Sportage has much softer materials within reach.

    How much more expensive can it get to cover the dash with a thin rubber layer? Anyways, frame rate needs synchronization, as it is noticeably jittery when moving.

    Marek did not accurately describe the dash. I own a 2016 Tucson Limited and it definitely has a soft dash. He must have driven a cheaper trim. In fact, he misrepresented just about every aspect of the 2016 Tucson except its curb appeal. He must work for Volkswagen.

    Yes, but Mazda has IMO one of the most cumbersome infotainment systems on the market at the moment, so for me that's a deal breaker.

    Marek is right, the CX-5 has a more plush interior, but also a much softer suspension. My wife owns a CX-5 and there is a painful amount of roll when going around the same turns at the same speed as in the Tucson. We park side x side in the garage and the CX-5 is considerable taller and sits higher on the suspension. Oh yeah, and when Marek says the infotainment system is cumbersome... you can't even use the touchscreen when the car is in motion for starters! They still do not have Apple CarPlay....etc. etc. etc.

    Are you sure, you can't just turn the radio volume to 0 and keep the sat navy on? I think Hyundai need some changes for west ern market, but that car your in is great value for money...but needs soft plastics...

    It would make sense. Apparently somewhere deep inside the infotainment menu there is a setting allowing you to change this, but I don't think I ever found it.

    espedale Great to hear that. I also like the technology offered, like adaptive cruise control etc., but I haven't found any reviews giving details on the driver assist systems. Have you had any experience in this area?

    It is disappointing that the Tucson does not have adaptive cruise control. That is definitely one of the few negatives, but the technology is so new that I don't know that I would trust it yet. I have used lane departure mode with good success. It is my understanding that it is not meant to be used on curvy roads (as in Marek's test) when the driver is actively driving. It is more useful when taking that long trip late at night on a long stretch of highway (think Vegas) and the stretch of road is so boring as to lull the driver to sleep. I have not experienced the false positives and negatives that Marek reports in the video. I have also used the collision avoidance with success. This feature tracks the car in front of you and applies the breaks before impact. The blind spot detection is also very good. It is very smart as it will not warn you of cars in your blindspot you are passing, but only cars that are coming up on you. It also appears to be able to calculate velocity of the approaching vehicle. In other words, it will warn you of a car farther back if it is moving faster, but will give a slower approaching car less distance, if that makes sense.

    @@boban61This feature does not steer the car for you. The system just beeps a couple times to make you aware that you are veering from your lane. My wife owns a 2018 Mazda CX5. Its lane assist will actually provide a gentle nudge back into the lane. Nothing overly dramatic, but it feels like someone gently tapped on the steering wheel. I don't like this in the Mazda because I may be trying to avoid something in the middle of the road. The Tucson is a smarter design on so many levels. BTW: The touchscreen is disabled on the CX5 when the car is in motion, which is ridiculous! Mazda seems to think it's safer to look down at the armrest and fiddle with a knob than to have your eyes at dash level. I've had zero buyer's remorse with the Tucson, but will not be purchasing a Mazda again! Strange that all of the reviewers (including Marek) are so hot on the CX5. I don't think it drives nearly as sporty as the Tucson... and I own both!

    I don't see the point of cars like this, they are not much bigger than a normal hatchback or small estate but are slower, more expensive too buy and run and not as nice to drive. Whats wrong with cars like the new Vauxhall astra, golf and there estate versions?

    Thing is though I'm a born petrolhead and they don't give me the philosophical fizz, I'd rather sit lower and enjoy a better driving car. The large SUVs such as the range rover cadillac escalade X5 Q7 etc a really like though, just don't see the point in the small ones.

    +doctormac123 tbh I do like these kind of cars. But you can't get better than ladder frame v8 SUVs and trucks. Suburbans escalade f150 and ofc the g class

    I would rather pay $10k less for a car with hard plastic dash panels and a key fob that is attached to the key in the ignition instead of rattling in the console.

    Yep, the price gulf is insane, as long as the steering wheel and buttons feel good (which they do), I couldn't really care less about the rest.

    To me there would be only the question: how solid is the hard plastic dashboard built? If it does not creak after 3 years, I don't mind if it's hard plastic. To me that's the whole point, except it would also look sh-t, what it doe's not here. (Some soft touch plasic smells worse so it's not automatically better.)

    I have zero idea what Marek is describing. I actually went out to my 2016 Tucson Limited and pushed on the dash as a sanity check. Yep, still soft material, so he may have a cheaper trim. I agree, If the material does not look cheap and you are not pounding on it to test the acoustics (like Marek), then what is the difference? I have owned only German sports cars in the past and do not feel slighted by the interior of the Tucson one bit. It is a very smartly built car with features I can't find in the X3.

    I took my drivers license in a 2016 Hyundai Tucson with the lowest hp diesel engine and I have to say im not surpriced, it drives well but not fantastic, it looks good, the engine is to weak for the car, steering feels weird, good engine torque, overall im not a fan of the Hyundai Tucson.

    A 40k car and they cant even put some soft plastic in it. Car prices are getting ridiculous. 40 k for 9.5 sec to 100, hard plastic, bad sound insulation... considering its price its a piece of 💩

    The interior is stellar and the dash is a soft material, unlike what Marek described. I own a 2016 Tucson Limited.
