2016 Ford Transit Connect LWB: Like driving an IMAX! Full Review and Test Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Those of you who've watched one or more of my videos know that I tend to like minivans, so I was pretty excited to check out Ford's new version of its eccentric city van, the Transit Connect.
As always expect a thorough, honest, unscripted, amateur review that hopefully answers your questions!
Thanks to Gurley Motor Company of Gallup, NM for the test drive.

I bought the 2015. I had it for a year before I found out the 3rd row could even recline. I wound up riding in the third row when I was on a long drive with family, we took turns. driving/riding. The third row was super-comfortable to me, I was able to nap a little. I'm 5'10". I've had mine for close to two years now, it's the best vehicle purchase I've ever made. I've gone from Houston to Tuscon with five people. I've moved a full size server rack across Houston. My wife is the primary driver. When my boy was younger and it took more work to strap him in she could stand up. During the long 5 people trip we only had one of the third row seats laying down stuffed with luggage. I've been able to hit 30 MPG on the highway when the thing was well tuned and empty except for the driver, no traffic, you know practically perfect fuel economy conditions, but right at 30 none the less. Bang for the buck this is hard to beat for a family vehicle, especially if you're like me and you do some work with it on the side. That and I have taken a sleeping bag and slept in it. The floor is hard, I recommend more padding than I had, especially if you're 40 like I am, it was easier when I was younger.

I bought a 2016 used with 12k miles. Now has 25k. Quick review: The Good: I bought this as a surf-mobile. It is great in that regard. Holds a 9'6" long board with the front passenger seat folded down. If I take a friend, we sit tandem. Minimizes chatter. Boards stay low and don't impair visibility. They are also secure inside if I stop for coffee and burrito after surfing. It parks like a dream. Overhead storage is great to keep stuff out of sight. Recommended add-on is the keypad remote that you can stick on the outside. That completes the surfing package. I also got weathertech floor mats to corral the sand. They are great. The Not-good: Fuel economy is not great. I see 23-24 mpg mostly highway single occupant. The climate control fans are loud at level 3 and super loud at 4. And yet, I feel like the AC really isn't doing a great job. Expect to replace the throttle body. Mine went out on day 3 of ownership. I think this is a well known Ford issue. The unforgivable: there is no switch to turn on/off all the internal lights that you would expect. You can dim the dash lights but there is no roller for the overheads. There are three individually controlled overheads and from the driver seat you can only reach the front ones. More light complaints! When you open any door all the exterior light turn on. It is like landing lights and a disco ball had a baby. There is no option in the software to control this function. There is a secret maneuver where you push the turn signal forward then pull back and it will beep and turn off the externals. Until the next door is opened. I don't think this will make you many friends at the campground or star party. Pro tip: the liftgate needs a lot of clearance behind the van to open. Jerks will love to park right behind you so that the gate cannot be opened. When parallel parking look for spots where no one can park behind you.

Honestly I’m here because my Lyft driver tonight owns one of these but an older version. I hopped in and immediately said “This is so cool.” I had to make sure I remembered the name of the model when I got out. I’m looking at used ones to potentially buy in my area because I’m definitely interested now.

Bought the XLT LWB Passenger 6 months ago for just the reasons you described. Drives fine, good handling, decent MPG. I live close to the city and park in a garage at work Downtown. Fantastic for squeezing in a narrow space....actually narrower than most full-size cars. I love the space inside...breathing room in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Not the cheapest way to go, but definitely unique...get so many comments everywhere I go..."What is that?" "That's cool looking" ...Everyone amazed at the air space inside. No it's not perfect, but I wanted simple and easy to use for light utility/people hauling/short trips which it does very well..

I loved your review. It is spot on. I went out and purchased a used 2015 XLT LWB wagon for 16k with 16k miles and it was everything you said. Great vehicle. Really impressed with it. The only downside is the Microsoft Sync had problems hooking up to the cellphone. The Sirius XM radio works great. Handles like a sports car. Ford has a winner in my book with the Transit Connect. Thank you for helping me choose this vehicle for my personal transportation.

Great review, Greg! I've been a little obsessed with this latest generation T.C. since it debuted, and I've been surprised at the absence of thoughtful consideration. Mind you, I don't own one yet but it's on my short list of next cars to consider. Your review joins Jalopnik's as one of two that I find hit the marks for me. I'm an outdoors loving city dweller, and one really notable benefit of this van (or minivan or MPV or whatever Ford wants to call it) is that it's not as wide as so many SUVs and the minivan trifecta from Honda, Toyota, Chrysler, plus some others. You're spot on: the narrowness will makes it so much easier to drive in the city--narrow streets and tight parking spots abound in my city, so this appeals. The next thing is the tallness. I take off with my family to the trails, lakes, rivers, and slopes whenever we can, depending on the season, with bikes, skis, or paddled craft. For that reason, I love that this vehicle is crafted with tall ceilings well suited for cargo but also has clever seating for 7. The minivans that call themselves minivans (aside: yes, I'd call this a van and it's small so perhaps it's mini, but wagon suits it well too) are really people movers first with some well done cargo ability built in, kinda the inverse approach, in my view. An offering that would make the T.C. extra appealing to me would be all wheel drive. But a car can't be all things for all people. But anyway, I see Transit Connect as the modern day VW microbus begging for a Westfalia makeover and also the natural replacement and improvement over the brilliant but canceled Honda Element. Thanks for your review!

I have 175 K miles driving two gen 1 Transit's for work and they are excellent work vans ! Having sliding side doors on both sides is a time and safety bonus. Today we got new 2016s and they are alot shorter but longer. Average real world fuel mileage was just under 26 MPG and that was 160 mile route in N AZ with serious altitude climbs.

  • @scottkolar7374

    @scottkolar7374

The van is 5 " shorter in height in the cargo area. I have the long wheelbase model and it has about 3' more length. I find that it is more usable space unless your cargo is tall. I have 3K on the van now and after the break in rich tune the new van is getting 28 mpg and hauls ass. It is fast smooth comfortable and stable. It has the 1.6 Ecoboost that is a big improvement over the 2.5 l non turbo. the steering is speed sensitive and the backup camera is also great. My only compliant is the Ford Sync is overly complicated to use.It works fine but isn't easy to use.

I just Love your review, Greeg I was looking for the perfect ride for my 3 kids and my wife. Coming from a Routan SEL to a Fusion SE was a big step down. But times are better now and We decide is time for a new minivan. Looking for a minivan reviews on KZread, I ended with this video. After that my quest to find her did start. After 2 month I did find one LWB Titanium Version in Houston, Tx. Let me tell you that everything you did said is true. Height is great, space fantastic, Handling wow, the engine run smooth and the transmission is strong. Regarding the ride is one of the best in my life. Yes everybody point her as king of weird. But she is a nice looking wagon. Regarding the price. Cost me 22K with 17K miles in the Dealer Ship. A great deal for the package. Bottom line is a great vehicle and as you mention if Ford make some improvement on the Gen 3. this is a winner. Been a former user of a VW Routan SEL this mean a lot. Thank you so much Your review is great.

I am a carpenter and I bought one last year in lieu of a truck. the ride is better, and with all the seats down (even the front passenger folds flat), I can fit a 12 foot piece of lumber in it. As for the power, it's not a Sportscar, but if you put the transmission in manual mode and select the gear with the thumb switch, it will shift at 6,000 rpms...and that will really wake up the hamsters!

Nice review! Quite thorough and better than many of the "big name" reviews. I recently purchased a 2015 LWB 7-passenger version. I was probably the target audience as I wanted a cheap urban family (4 person) transport with alot of cargo capability and the ability to occasionally move 7 people. I've been really pleased by the handling, mileage and parallel parkability here in Chicago and I'm charmed by the style and headroom. When looking for a car, my vanity was steering me away from the look of traditional minivans and the only similar contender was the now-discontinued Mazda5. The TC Wagon is definitely a VERY stripped down vehicle. Even the top trim models is far below most standard minivans. However, it lacks nothing I need. Oddly these can be rather hard to find at dealerships, but (likely because no one knows about them) used models seem to be quite affordable. I found plenty of one year old examples for around 20k and mine was considerably less. As your review rightly points out, there are enough possible drawbacks/quirks that it's not for everyone, but anyone looking for any sort of van, wagon or an alternative to an SUV should at least try one out.

Thank you! I just happened to run across this particular model on the Carmax website when I was searching for a newer vehicle. Didn't know exactly WHAT I wanted. Kept looking at this and that...then saw this beauty in a fantastic blue color. I've always driven smallish vehicles. I adored the "look" but was afraid it would be too big and boxy for me to comfortably drive. Your review has allayed those fears and was the last piece of the puzzle in my research...insurance rates are good, crash tests are good, and I believe I can drive it comfortably. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go for it!

Have now gone to a dealership and actually driven/ridden in one of these. I was very pleasantly surprised at the low interior noise level. I guess I was expecting it to be really noisy and I do appreciate your honesty about it being noisy when driven. However, compared to my current vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Versa sedan, the Transit Connect is much quieter. I believe I will own one of these 2016 models before too long :)

I have a 2014 Cargo. I also have rented the Ram and NV200, both of which seem a little spunkier but do not have very gutsy driver right arm rests and consoles (believe me, a broken arm rest spoils a van instantly). My head gets impaled on the stuff that keeps the rear door closed. I wish the front 12v outlet could be switch to on only when driving, so that I could add a dash cam. I added a halogen light to the cargo area, very good to have.

Some things to mention about those huge visors. One, Ford should use those magnets to hold them up to the shelf when stored. They are pretty heavy and will start to sag eventually. Two, they are short and don't cover the whole drivers side window, but also slide back on the mounting rod to cover the end you need.

I like this Transit Connect vehicle. I drive for Uber and think it would be great to take people around in. I do a lot of airport trips to LAX and sometimes it's a real challenge to get all the pieces of luggage into the car along with my fold-up 20" bike in the back, which I use to commute to the rent-a-car place, to pick up a 2016 Prius 3. I'm also looking at the new Prius V, but the Ford T.C. XTL has wheelchair compatibility, with a few modifications to the seat, in a folding sense. I can see it all. Now if I only had the money to make it happen.

Ford even put a 7yrs 100k power train warranty on it. I think what truly sold me though was the coolness factor. All the advice I can give you can be given by your roommate no doubt. See what helps your roommate be successful and go from there. My only advice is to make sure Uber approves the use of the Transit van in your area. Lyft is cool with this model, but Uber is a bit sketchy.

Why for Uber? You get paid the same as you would get paid using a Corolla, which is much cheaper in terms of price and gas

@@luperamos7307 Actually as a Lyft driver you get more rides with a minivan than a Corolla. A minivan allows you to get larger parties of passengers, rides sponsored by medical insurance companies, and Lyft-X rides (a request for a larger vehicle and which pays double). I imagine Uber does the same.

I have the Transit Titanium 2016, LWB. Love this van and bought it at a very good price in 2017. The only issue I've had is with the SYNC system - it's clumsy, at best. I use this to commute, to haul grandkids, to haul dogs, and to carry all the gear for 5 kayaks. We had them put a trailer hitch on as a condition of the sale - which is great but not as good as buying the factor installed towing package. One inconvenience, buying the crossbars for the raised (but no gap) roof mounts was nearly impossible and Ford wants $500+ for those. I did find a knock off online and we'll see how well that works. If I have one complaint, it's that the clips they use inside and outside the van to hold everything in place tend to be a bit cheap and we've had a few break. While we do give this van heavy use, it's not that heavy that any clips should have been broken. We're at 50,000 miles and have replaced the tires. No brakes yet, though that can't be too far away. We've had no engine repairs. Best small feature - that overhead storage. We just bought a Ford Flex and boy do we wish that was standard on all vans/wagons now. We're about to take the seats out and convert this to a weekend camping van. It would be GREAT if Ford would make quick release seats. I don't mind taking them in and out, but it would be super useful if they had a quick release system.

Thanks for the review. I really like this because you can get it in a bright red ext color. However it seems like a cargo van with some seats tossed in. I also can't see buying a 4 cylinder wagon (minivan). Think its going to take a beating in the mountains esp with AC turned on. Probably good for certain short journey travelers. Even with the LWB you are not going to fit a lot of camping equipment inside. Thanks for helping me make up my mind about 2016 Ford Transit Connect TitaniumBlessings,John 20:29

I specifically was interested in the gen 1 Transit Connect, because I wanted the high cargo capacity, which was reduced in the 2014. Didn't realize they still sold the original version, so I got a 2013 Transit Connect. I like the shorter length and barn doors; the LWB one seemed more a standard minivan than the original version.

I agree, the Transit Connect Wagon and 3 row crossovers really highlight how superior real minivans are on passenger space, cargo, and handling. I think Ford is selling these to businesses that want a small cargo van but occasionally need seats. There may be more space for theses wagons if all minivans continue to move up to $40k+ luxury barges.

  • @Apex180

I know this is a 3yr old review but its solid one (the Euro version of this is call the Tourneo Connect iirc). They still havn't made any improvements to the seats, i'd like to see them fold flat into the floor, they have plenty of room to do this. The choice of engines seems very limited over here (UK), no 2L or 2.5L's only 1.6 and now a 1.5 diesel in the newer versions with I think a ecoboost 1L petrol. Why am i looking at one; the estates we get (you call them wagons ?) are these days all 'compact' estates and really don't give you any more boot space then some large hatchback / saloons; this on the other hand has miles of space for like you pointed out bikes and such not; though am not sure i could live with it for a daily car to go to work and back, feels more like the weekend get stuff done / go places type of car. Some of the top spec ones don't look too bad in the pasion red / black or racing blue with the 17" wheels and all the extra kit you get with them puts some of the more expensive mpv's to shame.

Can the back seats all be removed completely from van and if so would that give you even more floor to ceiling headspace? I’m struggling between buying an old 2010-2012 transit connect cargo verse a connect passenger. I know the no seats and not fabric interior for cargo but are the heights of the floors different due to the seats needing some sort of connection ports. Almost seems the passenger vans have some sort of raised floors. Basically I need to know which van will have the highest floor to ceiling length for optimal ability to make a stealth camper with as much room as possible

I have a 2014 short wheel base. major fault is backing up. -like looking out of a cave. I still don't trust the backup camera. things I like: doesn't have those unnecessary huge tires the SUVs all have, it has a smaller footprint than most sedans making it easy to park. Remember the old 70s and 90s sales pitch? longer, lower, and wider? this one sports shorter, taller and narrower. fairly quiet ride. stable handling and feels like it has a much lower center of gravity than most vans or SUVs (And I own a 928 Porsche)
