Nice review! But maybe the drivers aids you mentioned, like rear detractors and lane departure were not available on Z71 at the time, but they are now, plus there mandatory with the diesel! Also you said the diesel would be available in all Colorados except the base, which is true, but only in a Crew Cab, the only Ext Cab that you can get a diesel in is the newest ZR2! A manual would be nice at times, but these new automatic transmissions are fantastic! Plus they work better than any manual could! Especially the new 8 speed automatic available now in the gas trucks. I've owned a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4,V6 Ext Cab for 17 months and 15,000 trouble free miles now. The only minor issue was the airbag recall, that the dealer took care of in a very short time, while I was able to take a Camaro SS out for a test drive! I get 17 city and 27 highway at the speed limits while using cruise control. I also tow a 4,000 lbs 21' travel trailer all over the east coast and Appalachian Mountains on many camping trips. The longest was this past feb/march for three weeks, from home in Massachusetts to Key West, down the east coast of Fla, the back up the west coast of Fla to The Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, then home again though VA,PA,N.J.,N.Y. and back into New England! On that trip we averaged 14 mpg! On a very similar trip, with the same weight but older travel trailer, with the third Silverado we had trad for the Colorado, we would average about 11 mpg! So needless to say we're very pleased with the gas powered Colorado! On that same trip, a cousin who owns a new Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4,V6 Crew Cab, towing an identical travel trailer as ours with his wife only averaged 12 mpg and had a noticeable lack of power in the mountains! We also traded trucks for a tankful of gas, only to all of us agree the Colorado is much more comfortable! Plus a smoother drive with better power delivery. So much so his traded his Tacoma just last week for a new Colorado Z71,4x4, diesel!!

It's sad you can't get this engine in an extended cab without having to step all the way up to the ZR2 trim level. An Extended Cab in WT or LT trim level with a long bed, spray-in bedliner, and diesel would have been perfect.

I'm glad to see a return of the small turbo diesel engine. The last time GM offered a diesel engine in its small trucks was 35 years ago. I only hope this one remains on the market for longer period of time than it did 35 yrs ago. Is diesel for everyone? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on what people want and what they use their truck for. Not everyone needs a large truck for the job. Sometimes a smaller truck would be perfect. Therefore, a smaller diesel engine would be better for the job. :)

Torque wise they can't be beat in a small pickup. I'm curious how Ford's i5 stacks up to the new Duramax. Not sure if we'll see it when they start selling T6 Rangers here or if we'll have something new by then.

I agree. The larger (6.6 litre) Duramax may be more popular, more people tend to think of the larger diesel engine when they want a diesel engine, but I believe that a small displacement (2.8 litre, etc.) diesel engine should be offered for those who want one or need one. For some reason, American car buyers haven't had that opportunity for such a long time.

What bothers me is why these smaller diesel engines aren't marketed more aggressively for the North American market.

nice review, good shots, good voice over. i have to say though i think the gas engine is still the way to go for most people who are going with the smaller truck. near 400 lb of tq from a small 4 cyl is really good but 181 HP at high way speeds the V6 will be faster.

+justin bouche Speed is not really what most people are looking for. The V6 cant even come close to the mpg number and as for towing this is 100% the better choice. I do agree that the V6 will be the volume seller but this engine is the way to go in my opinion. The only thing that turns me off of diesels in general is the DEF fluid.

no shit, trucks are not sports cars, but people want to know when they put their foot down they can easily reach 80 MPH quickly and have good passing power, sure the duramax 4 is great for that as well but its not as quick to accelerate at higher speeds. the argument i was really trying to get across is that for 3.5K more most people wont even need the towing power if they have a smaller truck and they will if anything enjoy the 3.6s huge HP advantage.

+matthebest018 true, I got one of the first of the new ones and the diesel wasn't available yet. I considered getting a diesel but I found out that it was a $4,000 option. I don't tow or haul that often. I did however tow my dad's trailer which is about 6'x9' and had about 3,000 lbs in it and my engine never struggled.

2 much. needs to be available in all trim levels

Got a 2019 w/diesel. absolutely love it. with tuner on it getting 36 on the highway at 75mph and 26 in city. great little engine that tows effortlessly. of course GM will probably screw this truck up down the road.

I think I will wait until there are enough of them out there to get a used one for a decent price.

E Meyer Seems like my 83 V6 Ranger was somewhere around there. Dad paid $7995 for his 87 Ranger, but it was a well optioned XLT. (He still has it). This Colorado is basically triple the price I paid for a top of the line Ranger in 1993 and almost twice what I paid for my 2000 F150.

Even several years from now a used one will still be around 30K. This isn't a "small" truck.

Need this engine in a completely refreshed Equinox ASAP.

Why would you not get the ram eco tradesman crew 4x4. I think its less then this.

the reason there is no diesel manual option is because 4X4, high torque and clutches don't mix well.

Yeah, given the cost of the options it will set you back the price of a more tow/haul capable full-size truck. However, it is still best in class for a mid-size truck.

seoulkidd1 I test drove both before I made my decision. I honestly believed Toyota was going to be my pick hands down. Easy choice once I drove them. I bought the z71 Colorado. The power is much better and the drive is so damn smooth.

@@BenBroker I own a VW TDI but I barrow a friend's Tacoma when I need to tow or haul . The Tacoma is not perfect but it's reliable and sturdy than most small trucks I've .
