I cannot WAIT for the Olympics! Been watching Katie Ledecky's races since she won that 2012 gold medal and am such a huge fan. I want her to somehow win at least 4 gold medals. It will be interesting to see if she decides to swim the 100m free. Thats the one event she has nothing to really lose. She and Simone Biles are my most anticipated athletes for the Olympics. Both deserve ALL the gold with the way they've dominated in their respective sports since 2013.

I just post the difference in this run and in Kazan last year (per 50 meters), you can have a look of that, she can gain the record by 1.14 seconds with just 50 to go, and a bit faster in the last 400 meters, the first 400 meters has an exactly time that she done in Kazan. She broke her own 400m record in 3.56.46, in this case, 800m free should have to made around 8:03 or 8:04 here

To add to the comment about having women swim the 1500, they have this other event called a, ahem, triathlon. In the olympic triathlon, women swim 1500m.....Oh yeah, then right after that they ride a bike 40 km then run for 10 km. So yeah, I think it would be safe to have women swim 1500m.

+Kun Fusion They have the 1500 in the World Championships so do you REALLY believe the reason it's not on the programme because anyone thinks they can't do it? Seriously? It's because they have limited spaces in the programme. The men don't swim the 800 do you think that's because they think they can't do it? Or they have 50 free but not 50 in the other events because swimmers can't make that distance.

The reason they haven't added the 1500m to the women's olympic program is not because they don't think they could do it (maybe that was the case when the event was first competed so many years ago), it's because they would have to add the 800m free for men's too to keep the genders balance, or eliminate the 800m altogether.

Rowdy is much loved but sometimes he just makes some stupid statements, like here where he complains about there not being a 1500 freestyle event at the Olympics for the women. Well, there isn't an 800 freestyle event for the men at the Olympics, Rowdy! Don't try to pass it off as a sexist thing. It has NOTHING to do with it and you know (or should) it. I still remember how at the 2008 Olympics, in the 4x100 freestyle race he remarked how the winning time would break the WR by 3 or 4 seconds and said "that's how good all of these teams are...". BS. That's how good those polyurethane suits are. He ALSO knew or should have known that.

  • @steele1995

+MrVpassenheim The fact that the men swim a longer distance instead of a shorter one, like the women do, proves that it is inherently sexist. If it were reversed, the world would have been up in arms long ago. There needs to be a change to allow women to swim the same events the men do. Women do not need a handicap. As for the suits is '08, they may have played a part but every single country was on point that race, and even the entire Swimming event. For you to write off the achievements of some of the greatest athletes of all time is a disgrace.

nick You're the perfect example of what we've come to expect from youth today: incapable of demonstrating basic reading comprehension or making substantive analysis on a topic. You got 2 things way wrong. First of all, The Olympics are the only major international swimming contest in which there is any variance on the schedule of events being swum, and then only in regards to the middle distance events - the 800 & 1500. An equal number of medals are handed out to both men and women. All other events are identical. The only plausible reason for the discrepancy is not AT ALL any purported bias against women (i.e., "women aren't strong/fit/have sufficient endurance to take part in the longer event.."). As far as I can tell, the 1500 has been swum in international contests for well over 30 years now. EVERY swimming fan, in fact, knows that unlike in other sports, in swimming women actually have the relative ADVANTAGE over men the longer the race goes. Look at any event, and you'll see that relative to the distance women's times improve more than men's. Practically all non-Olympic year international contests include both distances for both genders. So any insinuation that the Olympic swimming program is "sexist" is complete MANURE! The men could equally complain that they've been robbed the opportunity to swim the 800 event as the women have been robbed the opportunity of swimming the 1500. It could be something as simple as time constraints placed on the Olympic swimming schedule. Regardless, whether it is or isn't, no favoritism is being showed to men over women or vice versa. Please use your BRAIN next time before you comment and don't use the nauseatingly, in vogue with the times, knee-jerk conditioned assumption that people must be automatically racist/sexist/hateful (you name it!) if they don't automatically conform to your very limited knowledge of how the way things should be! Finally, if you weren't so judgmental, you would have been able to plainly see what I wrote rather than misinterpret it. I clearly was criticizing Rowdy for making an unwarranted comment. He credited the vastly improved swim times exclusively to the skill of the swimmers. Everybody knows that the WR would not have been broken by 4 seconds (or national records been broken by an equal margin) if it not had been primarily due to the suits being used by all these teams. Of course, everybody also knows that every one of the swimmers in the pool represented the best of the top 8 nations in the world. Making an Olympic team is an incredible honor and a distinction of the highest excellence in athleticism and the dedication needed to achieve that. It is beyond idiotic to think otherwise. That said, I guarantee you that EVERY one of the swimmers participating in that race knew that these incredibly fast times would not have been possible without those suits. If they didn't believe, they would never have bothered wearing them and instead would have opted for the older suits, hey maybe even just regular speedos. In fact, the WR is so fast that no team has been within a second of it in nearly 8 years. I hope I didn't waste all this time explaining this to you. I hope you are capable of reasoning things out.
