    The only challenge for Ledecky in the future won't come from another swimmer, it will be from the clock. Will she be the first woman to break the 8-minute barrier in the 800m? I wouldn't bet against her.

    What people need to realise too is that she's not beating cannon fodder here. The top 7 times in this race are all TOP level world class swims. Women's distance freestyle is actually quite deep at present, even without Ledecky this was a SCORCHING race, remember other than Ledecky, even including super suit swims barely a dozen or more girls have ever broken 8:20. So the fact she is dismantling such class athletes is even more impressive than it looks.

    This is still the world record as I write this (8-18-18). Unlikely she'll be able to take off another 5 seconds. Men's record (2009 suits) is 7:32.

    Every time I watch her swim I feel like I am watching a great artist at work. She is the most beautiful swimmer I have ever seen and I have seen every swimmer since the 1964 Olympics.

    What is your opinion of her technique as compared to Ian Thorpe? While their techniques are obviously different (each suited to their unique body composition), my question is specifically with respect to grace in stroke. I personally find both of them "beautiful swimmers", but will give Ian a slight edge. Just a personal opinion though !!

    Actually it was a race in 200 m freestyle where Swedish Sarah Sjöström strongly compete with Katie, but in longer races Katie has an absolute domination.

    Jess+ Not even close to 100 meters! Plus, if Ledecky were male, her 1500 would be around 14:06.5!!! And If she were to swim the 400 as a male, guess what! 3:31.4!!!

    I literally watch this every time before I go swimming in the changing room, it really gets me going! 💪She has perfect rhythm & power. The analogy is really useful too from the commentators I’ve learnt a lot

    Kapas brought her time from 2012 down nearly 7 seconds which is insanely impressive, yet she ended up losing 3 seconds to Ledecky over that time who dropped 10 seconds.

    Such bravery in pushing herself, so far past her limit. She should never have been able to finish this race at that pace. How wonderful to fight for triumph, completely without fear. May we all meet our own limitations with such courage.

    Watching this again 4 years later and still amazing to see. The close up during the race looks like a boat in the water. Amazing anaerobic capacity and flawless technique.

    I'd be interested to see if she is actually "super human" lol I'd bet she builds up less lactic acid than the average person allowing her to maintain a harder energy output without muscle fatigue ... Mark spitz was famous for it i would think ledecky is the same

    Phelps too. The elite swimmers all have less lactic acid buildup. Not sure if hers has been measured yet.
