2015 Mercedes GLA45 AMG - Rich Man's Subaru STI
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The 2015 Mercedes GLA45 AMG is in many ways a nicer version of the 2014 Subaru WRX STI hatchback. The dimensions are nearly identical, it has more power and more torque, and even manages to get significantly better fuel economy. This AMG is a rich man's STI. It features a 2.0L hand-built turbocharged I4 engine with direct injection. It produces 355 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, sending power through a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The vehicle features AMG performance 4Matic all-wheel drive, independent front and rear suspension, and summer performance tires.

the review i've been looking for!
Full time AWD in the Subaru can chew up some MPG, but I think the main reason is just that the EJ257 in the STI and the current one is an old motor. Hopefully Subaru can use the new FA20 in the STI for a better powerband and fuel economy, especially considering the massive competition from the Focus RS and a host of AWD hot hatches.

That and every new car nowadays with turbo are direct fuel injection, therefore it burns the fuel more efficiently. The wrx sti still has the old engine back in 2004 where fuel economy wasn't much of a factor if you wanted a turbo car. Today, we all want something fast but still has decent fuel economy. Before someone says if you can afford a fast car, you can afford the gas... That is not true. Most people who has money for a fast car are quite cheap so they want a good fuel economy fast car still.
Great video Jason! Very interesting comparison! I didn't realize the 2 cars were so similar in their dimensions. My only complaint when I drove the CLA45 was that the dual clutch was slow to engage from a stop. Maybe they fixed that in the past year for the GLA45. Did you notice any slow clutch engagement from a stop during your driving?

kenmastersmaster So the "autofaggot" transmission on F1 and Indycars makes them non enthusiast cars?
@paulashton5990
9 жыл бұрын
kenmastersmaster All current production Ferraris also have "autofaggot" transmissions, so by your definition are not enthusiasts cars. BTW Golf R has a single plate clutch system because the dual clutch system of the GTi cannot handle the power of the R. You seriously underestimate the cost of an F1 car. You also avoid the question. Do you seriously believe that F1 cars are non enthusiast cars because of their transmission systems?
@EngineeringExplained

subaruwrxfan Thanks Matt! Same story, slow to engage from a stop. Acts very similar to a manual transmission in that sense. It's almost like it leaves the clutch disengaged (rather than slipping) unless you press on the gas enough. My guess is it would have to do with preventing wear, but I'm sure it's a wet clutch so probably not much of an issue. Dunno.

I love your videos because you are so candid :)
I bought the GLA45 for one major reason and that is the harmony of the AMG engineering solution .. and I reckon it saved my neck already. I went outside the envelope (quite a bit ! ) and got it sideways under brakes into a corner; but the balance and 'thrust vectoring' got me out of the problem surprisingly quickly and without fuss. You get what you pay for !
I couldn't agree more about the mpg issue. It was okay 6 years ago but Subaru needs to fix that. The Golf R is extremely efficient and has the same power as an STi and gets over 30mpg. Other than that the STi is great but the mpg is one of the main reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
@gogutzy

if you want mpg there's always a wrx with a cvt out there. the sti refers to extreme performance, not everyday drivability and mpg.
@markjackson7650

My sti gets about 35mpg on the motorway and about 29 on fast wide open roads only killer is in town lucky if I get 22mpg. It's really all down to how you drive it and the quality of fuel. Here in the UK 98 ron petrol is readily available which helps a lot.

I got a 2017 and i freaking love it
my boss at work has the amg. went in it a couple days ago. fxxking mental car. the exhaust noises are straight up rally from the 80's. the traction off the line is eye popping.
You are awesome!
Wow.. I didn't realize how similar they were until you showed the side by side.
Aye at the Vista house!
Two very different cars with different purposes in my opinion. Thanks for the review.
Great vid! Wow, what a cool car. I didn't even know they exist! I wonder if they'll have the aftermarket tuning support that the STI does. If not, that'd be a deal-breaker for me. Some people buy cars that have the performance they want out of the box. I, conversely, would buy one seeing it's potential and wanting to bring it to pass through some key, well-chosen mods.
Mercedes tunes their exhausts to sound so mean! Love that crackling and popping!
I agree with you on the MPG's Kind of a bummer they are only averaging in the lower 20's
My dream car is the WRX hatch, but then I found the GLA45 AMG and thought when I'm a lot more successful then I would definitely buy the Mercedes. It is definitely a more impressive car, and more professional. The Subaru is sort of the 20-30 year old crowd.
Awesome review, I completely agree. The Golf R is similar to the AMG, a quick, nimble, yet comfortable car. I'm interested in comparing the AMG to the R, but I do understand its more expensive. You should get your hands on an R to compare to an STi and see if you feel the same way or not.

In the UK the Golf R is a car high on the car stealers’ list. It will go to middle European countries as soon as they’ve stolen it from your drive. For some reason they don’t covet the AMG GLA45, that’s a huge bonus in my eyes. I’m into my third year of ownership of a 2018 facelift model GLA45 and it’s proved a stunning reliable daily driver. A proper “Q” car and flies (very quickly) under the radar…
subbed!
I love everything about this car except for the styling. Big props to Mercedes for stepping outside their comfort zone here. You are an excellent reviewer by the way.
would you believe I saw an A45 AMG in NYC - I asked the asian guy where he got it because this car isn't supposed to be here - he just looked at me like I was crazy and said he got it in Miami...I am level 46 car nerd...did not mistake this car for anything else...

I love STIs (06 STI owner) but I adore AMGs. I would say another advantage the Subaru has, albeit a subjective one, is that I love how raw and uncompromising the STI feels. No unnecessary luxury or pampering, just a real driver-focused car.
+Engineering Explained I recognize that historical rest stop! I just got back from Oregon what a great state. Except the driving. Everyone goes the speed limit! Super weird.

bbbl67 Parts are crazy expensive. For example a early or mid 2000s AMG is a very dangerous purchase. When small things break its not so bad, but if a turbo needs to be replaced it would cost nearly as much as the car. Look at some 10 year old amg cars. A twin turbo V12 for 25k is tempting but you'll spend another 25 in 2 years for maintenance.

I plan to to Full FBO and go E85 and pray that the heads hold good. I’ll probably change our head studs and spring in the head to make it hold more boost and be good. I see potential in this motor
After driving Japanese cars for the last 10 years, integra type r,Wrx,370z then converting to bmw330, Audi s3 I can unequivocally say I will probably never go back to them. Not because they are bad cars, they are great cars, affordable has good performance. But now stepping into a Euro car, it's like night & day, you have build quality, comfort, performance, styling, fuel economy and a head turner. The only thing I miss is that unique WRX boxer engine sound..other then that I could not be any happier. Next is a S class Merc in a few years I hope
This car it's very nice
Nice comparison. You should definitely review the Audi S3 sedan or even the RS3 Sportback (once it gets available in the US).
Yes, but can the merc's AWD system really stand up to the STI's, both in terms of dynamics and reliability? Bulletproof AWD is kind of the primary reason to get a Subaru.
u really make good videos,,,keep it up,,,don't change,,,also can you do more videos on car's braking power,,it's control ;like ecs on and off,,,stuff like that is more interesting(sporty) and what matters,,,most of the time, i skip the the talk about interiors.D o more on dynamics of it.For example,my favourite part(apart thn ur explanation on how their technology works,i like the way u explain) is from 5:30 .
Yeah people make fun of the GLA for being just a jacked up A class (which it is) but with the GLA45 AMGs lower ride height it really looks like a proper hatch again, definitely a cool car imo. Keep up the good work and who knows maybe you'll own one of these lol.
look at that speedo climb
CPO versions of this car are now available in the mid-to-low $30k region. When an STI hatch with 60k on the clock still commands upper 20's without a warranty there's really no comparison left. Get the Merc.
Nice comparison, as always :) You can get a lot of speakers and petrol for 12000 though :D
If you solve oil burning issue on STI with Crawford aos + inline mishimoto catch can. You can get 26mpg at 65mph.
great video! Can you do a video that compare between the front-wheel biased awd vs rear-wheel biased awd system on performance cars?
could you switch transmission while in standard mode? or in other words, could you change into manual transmission while driving? or do you need to be in a complete stop?
Awesome car and review, seems somewhat unsatisfying having a 8k tach with what appears to be a only a 6100 redline, lots of cars seem to be that way also though.
I cant wait for the Audi RS3 to come to the USA I imagine that will be a perfect car for you to upgrade too!
Engineering Explained you should test this with the 2015 sti. I've owned 4 Subarus now 3 of which were wrx/stis and the 2015 fixes all the problems you mentioned. I went from an 08 sti to the 15 launch edition and the interiors are like day and night not only is it a better interior but because of the quality of the elements used there is almost no rattling or vibrations that the 08-14s had. Just my two cents but I feel like comparing a new car to a last year model car isn't really a fair fight.
Funny. That's what I said to myself when I read a review of the GLA 45AMG. And I said I'd find one to replace my 5 door subbie too.
Pleaseeeeeeee do a review on the EVO
I went with a Wrangler over a WRX this time around because well, I love jeeps... I really wanted an STI ALSO, but I think once the rust and age starts to kick in, I'll see what Mercedes has to offer after watching this video. My friend has a C63 AMG and it's "kind of" cool, but this? I had no idea this existed!
I'd read that this car struggles with stop-and-go driving situations due to its dual-clutch transmission. Did you experience any jerkiness or unsettling behavior from the DCT?
can't get over those bright red seatbelts, do they all come like that?
I love my 2004 WRX STI sedan in WRB
How about an episode of head-to-head on a track video?
But which one is more reliable?
do you have any information in regards to the weight distribution, height of the COG or polar moment of the two cars? it would be interesting to see a track battle between these two!
Regarding fuel mileage, you have to take into account aging engine technology in the STI, as well as, the drivetrain incorporating REAL AWD.
I really appreciate that you say "three hundred fifty five" rather than "three hundred and fifty five." Kudos.

Aaron Connolly I like math, yo! But I'm sure I'll say it wrong at some point.
I think you should do a comparison of your STI and a Golf R auto or manual for that matter and you will discover is pretty much an updated version of the STI
The Subaru has one big advantage - you aren't afraid to get it dirty and have fun with it doing what it was created to do - Offroading!!!

Agreed, the W204 is way better looking than the W205, because it looks a lot mot agressive and sporty than the almost too elegant W205.
Near the end you went over a bridge that looks very much like the one by Bald Head Falls in the Smokies. Is that where you were? Rt 28, 129 (Tail of the Dragon), and the scary holy shit where did that reducing radius turn come from? are some awesome roads to test street cars. Just watch out for motorcycles. They rule those roads.
I truly do like your review. I just wish that it was a little more in depth.

Engineering Explained have you ever heard of the Mitsubishi gallant vr4 they are really cool. The first and the last generations of it are my favorite. Do a review on it if u can.
Good review! I think I'd agree with you in your choice, however, the one thing that would concern me with a Merc is reliability and the cost of repairs... The other thing about price point are the options, especially on German cars they can send the price up by tens of thousands of dollars. Do you remember what spec you had on the car you tested and whether the sound system etc is available at that price point?
Completely agree with your comment on MPG's... In todays world the STI is not a competitive performer for the person who daily drives it. What was once chalked up to 'because race car' has now been overcome with technology in other cars. I had a 2010, and the only upside was that I only lost about 2 MPGs when I was getting on it. Still loved the car, but it eats at your mind when your contemplating a 300 mile weekend trip :( I'm waiting for a new engine (and hatch?), and then I will buy new :)
Im interested to know about maintenance cost for each vehicle you review after 5 years. we all know that that disk brakes, suspension and other mechanical parts would have to be replace at some point. Is Mercedes as reliable and easy to work on as a subaru?
I want a car that looks like this GLA with an Audi 2.5 L turbo inline 5, full time rear bias AWD, a 7 speed manual transmission with a metal shift gate, an active suspension like those in Mclarens and some big brembo brakes.
Is the higher MPG rating on this car based on when the AWD is off?
Jason, where are these roads you're driving on? They look beautiful

eighteeens Oregon is a gem of a state!
Thank you! But it is too short movie!
what about visibility?
I think the reason behind the better gas mileage is due to the higher power output of the engine, it does not have to put that much effort as the Sti's in order to achieve the same results, considering a conservative driving style in city and highway.
might want to consider cost of maintenance.
