What Jordan speaks about at 14 minutes into the video is something that he now (6 years later) refers to as “black truths” which is kind of like the opposite of “white lies”. You should really look it up. I think it’s a brilliant phrase. He explains it nicely. All you have to do is search “black truth - Jordan Peterson”.

Interesting. I like going back to the older lectures now that I’ve seen mostly all of his newer lectures. I also like how this series set the stage for his biblical series.

Buy his books. Read them in groups. Read his notes and bibliography, take notes, and discuss them with like-minded individuals seeking meaning and successful relationships. You'll eventually read, think, speak, and write effectively. Good luck on your journey.

So we can say that each slice of the truth should contain all the truth, and saying that someone is ugly is the opposite of saying the truth, but not the negation of the truth

In his book "Optical Media" Kittler has this quote and I'll dig it out if you really want me to but the quote was something like this: "once we have a chemically-pure [meaning practically immune to degradation over time] representation of something in the form of photograph(s), the thing itself no longer matters; smash it, burn it, destroy it, but its representation, the information which constitutes its being, is preserved, and so that thing can be reconfigured." Obviously there is something wrong with this way of thinking: it feels logically as well as morally wrong. Yet, logically, maybe it's not: its essentially how transporters works in Star Trek. This brings me to the crux of my question: if we create elegant, awesomely archetypal stories about ourselves that outlast us as individuals/societies, do we matter less to ourselves as a result, because instead of having to embody the archetypal hero in order to teach our young, they can just like Google it? It's like a satanic inverse of that quote you throw out a lot: "we die so that our thoughts don't have to."

Sam Collett It's why tradition is so popular in Eastern culture, because a lot of their religions are rooted in the idea that they carry the torch of our ancestors. Now I don't know Kittler, but based on the passage provided, and assuming that traditional meaning is the basis of existence, then his thinking isn't wrong. However, that basis of meaning isn't meaning to a lot of people, especially in Western culture. Primarily that's because of our judeo-christian roots, but Peterson discusses more of that further into his lecture. Hopefully you've found something that can answer you if you've already finished this series (and I highly encourage you see this series all the way through), and I'm curious as to what your thoughts are now that time has passed since this question was asked.

He "sort of told the truth" about pick up artistry haha Some guys really use language instrumentally, but the best seducers try, like he said, to "have the most truthful interaction possible" and see what comes out of it. But here's the thing: those who implement the second strategy are only able to do it because they have enough social experience and control over their non-verbal communication to not fuck up in the process. Then, assumed the girl is minimally interested in their "type", they are pretty much guaranteed to succeed.

Some thoughts: Nietzsche and Heidegger hated Socrates because Socrates is trying to say there is objectivity and the other two are saying there is just subjectivity. Socrates is saying consciousness is non-body and can be objective; the other two can only believe that consciousness is part of the body and affected or colored by the body. There isn't anything to YOU without consciousness, but that doesn't mean everything ceases to exist. People die and the CN Tower is still there. This is the problem: the hyper subjectivity of Heidegger. It's baby-like. Love and hate are not necessarily opposite; they are both emotions. So you would have to say, "I feel emotion and I don't feel emotion" to be contradictory. I feel you have great psychological insights but question your philosophy. We are the offspring of Adam & Eve, we are the hero. However, we didn't all emerge from the snake in the Garden? What would the interpretation be?

Nietzsche thought that Socrates was abnormal, because of his ugliness, head size, and that he was totally rational, the quintessential rational man, which is something of a freak of nature. Nietzsche, under the influence of Schopenhauer, thought that the emotions were key to life, whereas Socrates exhibited total rationality and was devoid of emotions. Socrates, a freak of nature , became the human type that the west inspired towards and this was decadent according to Nietzsche. You get the picture...

Real social dynamics is nothing like the pick up artists you describe in this lecture. You should follow them, especially RSD Tyler, to see the value they provide in teaching men how to become successful with women. They are far from the generalization you laid out here. I'm sure many RSD fans watch your videos because you both have similar messages. The only reason I found your videos is because of Real Social Dynamics leading me down the path of self-development 5 years ago. They literally saved my life. Now I am engaged to the love of my life and our 1st baby boy is due in less than one month. You yourself discuss exposure therapy to cure anxieties. Well, it also works with social anxiety and dealing with fear of rejection from women. It does not have to be done in a sociopathic way. Women have a choice. It is an insult to women to imply they are being tricked into sex. Women have been having one night stands long before pick up artists. They also enjoy having sex. And any guy I would associate with would never call himself a pickup artist. You're simply a guy learning a skill that others have naturally.

@BiblicalChristianSteve I'm sorry but some women take men on naively Men women and the triggers of the so called game can lead to years of misery for some. While others are using them to better themselves or chances. Some are tolerant of situations they would never place themselves in otherwise and the only reason is because they were manipulated into them. It's the most damaging thing a man can do to a woman and a woman can do to a man. Yes you grow and there is changed behaviours but always at the expense of innocence of the other.

I often find myself agreeing with Jordan's ideas but disagreeing with the language he uses to express them. For example, he says that telling an ugly person he's ugly is true only in narrow literal sense, but not in the deeper sense, because it doesn't serve things like enlightenment. I think he's trying to make the concept of ”truth” mean more than it does, and that it would simplify things to say that the statement is truthful but still bad for other reasons (hostile etc, and if the attacker claims that he's just being virtous for telling the truth he's a shitty deceptive liar at that.)

I think the reason he uses the word truth in a deeper sense than just the literal is because it is how the word has been used for centuries. Jesus said, "The truth will set you free." I think we can agree that he wasn't referring to a simple fact of reality as it is manifest to one's senses, but a grander, more fundamental truth.

@Xymo No you didn't get the bit about ugly. He said that calling a person ugly because they are ugly _right now_ doesn't serve persistent truth. To be TRULY ugly, you have to be ugly before now and after - rather than his example where you just caught a person at a bad time, and they look pretty ugly _in the moment_ where they usually would not. Maybe they have a hangover lol. The link to enlightenment and the Osiris bit, is to reinforce the past present and future dynamics of persistent truth compared to momentary or prepared truth (where you will be wrong the rest of the time apart from when you said the thing).
