Lincoln's MKZ has long lived in the shadow of its Ford brother, the Fusion despite following the same formula that made the Lexus ES a success: take a mid-size volume car, add some bling, real wood, more standard options and a longer warranty. The trouble with the last generation according to the automotive press is that the MKZ looked too much like the Fusion. For 2013 Lincoln solved that by giving the MKZ all new sheetmetal that is more distinctive while at the same time doubling down on the value proposition by inserting more standard equipment than any other entry in this segment.
The 2014 and 2015 models of the MKZ come in three different flavors. Things start out with as 2.0L turbo engine in the 2.0T, the same 3.7L V6 as the bigger MKS makes a cameo in the MKZ 3.7 and Ford's excellent 2.0L atkinson cycle hybrid system powers the MKZ 2.0H. The 2.0H trim is the model that Lincoln let me for this review.
While I'm still not totally sure about the exterior style, the inside of the MKZ is highly competitive. With parts quality and build precision easily up to the level of the Acura TLX, the Lincoln handily beats the Lexus ES when it comes to inviting cabins. This last generation of ES 300h and ES 350 contain large amounts of hard plastic and surprisingly sparse use of leather, wood and metal trim. The opposite describes the MKZ with a well trimmed interior that has no harsh touch-points within reach of the driver.
What separates the Lincoln from the rest of the pack is not the 3.7L V6 in my mind. It is the hybrid. Even though the MKZ is down on power compared to the Avalon hybrid and the ES 300h, the Lincoln is thousands less expensive and by far the better handling vehicle. Not often said of hybrids, but the handling and general road dynamics are quite simply the best feature about the MKZ. Thanks to wide standard tires, a standard adaptive suspension and a serious dedication to suspension tuning, the MKZ hybrid is only a demi-step behind the Mercedes CLA250 out on the road despite being two sizes larger. The combination of excellent value, sharp handling, a smooth ride and fuel economy that is class leading makes me wonder how it is possible the Lexus ES outsells the MKZ 2:1. If you're shopping for an ES, especially the hybrid, take my advice: drive right past the Lexus dealer and get the MKZ. Then go on a European vacation with the $7,400 you'll save.

    WANT IT!! I love that roof line, the hips, the little faux-spoiler, the light bar, the excellent hybrid system, great interior, the panoramic roof, pushbutton transmission... the only thing I'm not crazy about is the grille, but I could easily live with it. In side profile it's just such a goshdarn sexy car. I'm surprised Lincoln doesn't sell tons of 2.0H MKZs at $299/month or whatever they advertise.

    Wow!! A two part review and so informative. I'm sure you will catch some viewers off guard with your praise for this car. But not me. I have read the reviews from owners on Edmunds and they love this car also.The secret is getting out about Lincoln and the quality cars they are building. Now if they build a MKC hybrid my choice would get a lot harder. Thanks Alex.

    I like that lincoln chose to not cheap out and every single light on the exterior is LED including the turn signals and running lights. A lot of manufacturers cheap out and only do the rear break lights and front DRL. I think what I like most about this car is that its distinctive. Nothing else on the road looks anything like it. Especially that sleek rear end.

    We all have different opinions on this but I think this car is beautiful. As far as design goes, I think it breaks the mould. There aren't many of these cars on the road but when you do pass one, I guarantee, if you have any gasoline in your blood you will turn your head to look. They stand out. Well done to the lincoln designers. This is just my opinion but I visited the Dusenburg Cord Auburn museum two years ago and when I saw this car for the first time it reminded me of the wonderful Cord models of bygone days. I think this is a future American classic that hints at the iconic American design cues of the 20's. Am I alone in this observation or does anyone else agree? I'm a European living in America, if this car was available in Europe, they would fall over themselves to get one! Love it.

Don't see many of these on the road at all. Out of all the cars mentioned in this category I see more AVALON'S, which I also like the looks of now.

    Your reviews are well done. Many kudos!! I was viewing the 2015 TLX and MKZ and learned a great deal about both cars. I will be shopping for a replacement for my 2006 Hyundai Azera Limited soon. The one item I would like to see in your reviews is egress/engress. We are an aging society and some of us are a bit more limited in mobility. The ability to get in and out is of some concern at this stage. Thanks for the great reviews and keep up the good work.

    I loved the looks of this car before watching your review. You pointed out a lot of comfort and tech features that have totally changed my opinion. I was considering another Prius, but I'll gladly pay a little more for these luxury features and give up a few MPGs. I just test drove the MKZ Hybrid today and it blew me away. I'll be buying one in the next few weeks. I can get a late model, loaded, low mileage certified MKZ for about what I'd pay for a new Prius. Great in depth review, you made me look outside my comfort zone. Thank you.

    Alex, outstanding review. . .as usual. I am very pleased you reviewed the MKZ hybrid, as this, the Avalon hybrid, and the ES300h comprise the entirety of my shopping list for my next vehicle; so with this review, I have a much clearer vehicle vs. vehicle idea of my options. My only concern in the 40-series / 19" tires that come with the Prefered package; that low aspect ratio normally yield very hard riding on less-than-perfect surfaces. Your thoughts?

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    Yes 40 series tires generally result in a harsher ride. However the MKZ has an adaptive suspension which largely counters this in "Comfort" mode.

The lexus has better features and refinement but the Lincoln goes down the road or curves very well. This review remains relevant and the Lincoln has held up well.

I know it was not discussed but for the money optioned up, how does this compare to the 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 ?I know its not apple to apple comparison but money wise its in the same ball park? I'm in the market in the near future and looking for high MPG vehicle ,thats a great driving experience and good handling driver vehicle also. I do like the Honda Accord Hybrid ,but now I'm very interested in this also ! Whats your thoughts , if you were to buy , what would you get and your advise ? Thanks , keep up the great work your doing , best reviews i've seen on youtube ! Joe

    It's a bit apples and oranges, but I would say that the MKZ hybrid is my favorite car under $50,000 while the Genesis 5.0 is my favorite car under $60,000. The Genesis is more of a BMW 5 series for less while the MKZ is more of a fuel effciient luxury Volvo in some ways. I'd comment also that the Accord Hybrid is my favorite under $40,000. Decisions decisions...

    Alex, love your reviews and bought a used 2014 MKZ Hybrid in 2017 for about $19000 which I thought was an incredible buy as it is exactly the same car you test drove here. I only wish it came with the upgraded seats though as they are not as comfortable as other cars I've owned in the past and would definitely agree with your 8 out of 10 rating on that. One thing not mentioned that you do mention in later reviews is the lack of a spare tire on the hybrid model with only a can of fix a flat provided which I found very disappointing. I may be old fashioned but I get very nervous driving this car into the country for fear of getting a flat, not being able to re-inflate the tire, and being stranded along the side of a dark, desolate road someday. Other than that this is a great car to own, drive, and enjoy. Thanks again for your fair, unbiased, and excellent review on this and all the other cars too!

    +Mike The MKZ had wider tires than the quietest fusion (the 68dB one) and the MKZ also had a hybrid that as I recall kept the engine running at a slightly higher RPM. The Fusion Energi was 69dB which is quite close to the 70dB in the MKZ. I'd say they are more or less equal there.

    1st time I see someone complement the work done by American engineers in Lincoln, CNET(Cooley),autobytel,etc etc werent happy with the new Lincolns but when I tried em I was surprised, sure it cant easily beat a BMW 3 series,Audi A4,Merc C class but I found this car better than Lexus,Acura,Infinity,almost equal to or better than Caddies Also the CCD suspension is awesome somewhat like Audis air suspension, I loved Normal and Comfort mode nobody understands how good this car is and goes for badges from Germans or Japanese and if someone dosent care about the badge the MKZ Hybrid is superb car The next facelift of MKZ will have same interior of new MKC the upcoming Lincoln MKS is something to watch out for Lincoln is benchmarking 2014 Mercedes E class for making the new MKS, it ll have 9 speed auto,280-330 HP from 2.3l ecoboost engine,a 2.7l ecoboost v6 with 350 HP as option,3.5l ecoboost v6 with 380 HP, FWD & AWD,and interior quality is unbelievably good for a Lincoln,google 2017 Ford Fusion for spy shots

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    10 жыл бұрын

    Tricky question. Yes with some caveats. Lincoln is the brand that is trying to stretch from where Buick is (in terms of brand position) to where Volvo is. I'd call that a half step swap from the big 6: Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Cadillac, Audi and Infinti. This would be the brands that don't have a full line of small/medium/big sedans, convertibles, etc. In general you get the luxury trappings like real wood trim, leather dashes, etc. Buick on the other hand can't step on Cadillac's toes so they are more limited in scope making cars that slot between Chevy and Cadillac (in general). So it's a yes and no. Yes it competes with the Regal without question, but also in many ways with the ATS.

    Hi Alex, Super Review. Here in the Middle East they only have 2 models of the Fully Loaded 3.7 L engines left for sale. However it doesnt have the multi contour seating and perhaps other small add ons? Do you think its worth ordering the 2015 model with all these little add ons? Is it better than the Genesis if they were simliarly priced here? Also why do you reckon they don't have the fully automated braking like the Genesis? Do you think that extra bit of technology actually makes a difference, or is that an overrated advert suitable sidenote not worth sitting on the fence about?

    I like both the Genesis and MKZ, the Genesis is the better overall driver if you can afford it but I think the MKZ is the better value. The safety systems are all dependant on what the manufacturer thinks their buyers would like. In general the Europeans and Americans tend tune their systems to act at the last moment or assist rather than interacting in a more severe manner earlier.

    orckiller91 It would depend on how much you want to spend of course and what MPG you wanted. IF you drive the Accord gently, you can get much higher MPG numbers than the MKZ but the lincoln will be a more "traditional"hybrid experience.

    +orckiller91 DON'T. Sale stats show 3 out of 4 buyers are NOT buying the hybrid version, even though it carries the same pricetag as the normal gasoline car. This shows buyers still don't trust hybridization in their cars (perhaps they heard it costs $2500 to replace the battery after 8-10 years). Yes I have done that .

    If a guy who drives virtually every car out there says he would own it, that is saying something. And Lincoln's reliability ratings right now are superb. I suspect, for the grille, the idea was to incorporate 1940's nostalgia into the design. Not a bad idea, but I think they could have executed it a little better.

    Since I'm a cheap guy, yes. I rank them very similarly, but the MKZ is more expensive. You get more car with the MKZ and more features, but you do have to pay for them.

    Alex on Autos Thanks for the reply Alex. I've heard alot of bad rap about the Lincoln MKZ's interior quality and have sat in it at the auto show. It was a little underwhelming, alot of complaints about the switchgear for some reason which i found to be equal to the Fusion (perhaps that's the negative?). Is it on par with the Honda Accord at least? And is the fuel economy difference of 38 to 45 highway a big difference in these cars?

    Garden of Harmony I didn't have an issue with the quality of interior parts for the price. Keep in mind it is priced like the A3 and CLA and both of those are full of hard plastics as well. The difference between 38 and 45 MPG on the highway is noticeable for sure, but it's not as big of an impact as going from 18-25 for instance. The MKZ hybrid handles much better than the Accord hybrid but that does come at a cost and that cost is fuel economy.

    Why have you not reviewed the Tesla Model S?

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    10 жыл бұрын

    The simple answer is because Tesla won't loan one to me. The longer answer is that Tesla won't loan one to anyone more or less. They are the only company that does not lend cars for review for a week. All the existing reviews out there are cars that are either owned by the publication, owned by someone who lent it to a publication for review, or based on 8-36 hours with a car provided by Tesla, usually with a Tesla employee in the passenger seat the entire time.

    Fuel economy varies greatly depending on driving style, cargo weight, terrain and the weather. When the MPG numbers get bigger, things like tire inflation, and road surfaces make more of an impact as well. In general hybrids like this will do better the more you drive in slow-and-go traffic.

    Owners get better acceleration, and similar, or better, fuel economy in the Lexus ES300h, but I dig this design. Too bad it's a Lincoln.

    E. Smart Yes, it depends on your driving style and situation. The Lincoln does a little better in harder driving because the battery is designed to accept higher levels of charge. The Lexus is a little more economical than the EPA numbers if you drive it gingerly. The ES's biggest problem is that the Avalon is arguably nice inside and $6,500 cheaper. I agree, the Lincoln logo can be a liability for some.

    The Avalon is an excellent car, and has great styling inside an out. But the ride is on the firm side, and the softer Lexus ride, and Lexus badge and service are bringing in plenty of buyers.

    E. Smart Generally speaking ES hybrid is better at highway and little bit worse in city. So ymmv. The Avalon should exceed both but I thought the suspension didn't deal well with bumps and uneven pavement. The MKZ definitely in my opinion had best handling of them all. Acceleration I would not have rated 8 and was bit weak spot. It's about time Toyota is refreshing their 4+ year old hybrid system since Accord is much more fuel efficient system. Most likely we'll see that in about 1 year when Prius gets redesign.

    Sorry, I ck'd 3 Dealers in my County.. We live in teh Rural Part of the State of Wi. and Nobody wants a HYBRID! Very Little Local Driving vs Hwy Driving above 45 mph.. thus the hybrids sell for alot less for a used one.. thus go Shop in the Rural Countryside in your states for getting a Deal on a used hybrid

    The front of this vehicle looks great, but the tailights just don't do it for me. The interior of the mkz looks good, but the avalon's interior is on par with it in many aspects. It's sad that toyota chose the cheap route when it came to some of the plastic materials in the cabin, but I must say it's tastefully done. The avalon hybrid exterior destroys the mkz's hands down in my opinion.
