This video was a big help thanks. And yeah I thanks for the comments below. I didn't remove the metal bracket either. Just needed to use a elbow joint and extension to get both bolts off the starter.

Appreciate the video, just replaced the starter on a 2017 Ram 1500 w/ 57,000 miles. Took me over 3 hours as well, definitely could do it in 2 hours if I had to do it again. Purchased the starter from a dealership for $150.. I was in a rush, seems like eBay had the OEM part for about $95..

When a starter goes there is no time to wait for a part!

I watched this before I replaced mine. It looks like your selonoid to bendix ground wire corroded away, mine did the same. I want to add though, the black plate you mentioned removing to access the second bolt. It doesn't need removed, I was able to get a socket and extension on the bolt with ease. I'm not sure if this will apply to everyone's but it'll save you some time if it does. Thanks for documenting your repair.

Same thing with my 2014 ram , not the starter , but a locked w control module , thought for sure the starter , but by accident took my battery post off , and put a charger on the battery , battery was fine as it was only charging 2 amps to it , and voltage was over 12 volts , anyway left the post disconnected overnight , well today hooked the post back on , started up like a champ . for some reason the wireless keyfob and the module get locked and it prevents engine turn over , and when you disconnect the battery cable to do the starter change you get the same effect , you reset the wcm module by accident . hope this helps

I know this is an older video but I just went through it on my 2017 1500 5.7 and was initially told my battery was a little week so it was telling the neutral safety switch that the truck was in gear, so I put a new battery in and it was good for about a week then it would start sometimes and not other times so I bought a starter and when I went to pull it I found the wire from the battery was a little loose so I tightened it and it's been good since.

Thanks for the vid! I didn't have to remove the black bracket on my 2012. The nut on the 12V lead is 13mm.

Did my 2006 Ram 1500 and your corrosion was way worse than mine. I'm in Illinois too. I did not remove the bracket that you did, and there was next to no room for my hands. I ended up using a 1/2 inch ratchet handle with a 3/8 inch adapter to break loose the bolts on the starter. I was getting minimal turns on them. I finally got them out. I paid O'reillys 169.00 (remanufactured )for the starter plus 40 core charge, which was returned. The cheaper starter (139) was not in stock. Watch when you order one , there is a different design between a starter for manual vs automatic transmissions. I watched your video and a couple others which helped loads...

You didn't show taking the starter out, putting it back in or anything other than getting to it. I still have no idea how it plugs in or gets bolted in.

A deep 15mm socket will fit behind the bracket... don't have to remove it. It's just a real bear to remove, can only move the ratchet about 2 clicks at a time. "Patience is a minor form of despair disguised as a virture." Not looking forward to threading it back in there.
