2014 Buick Regal Review | Consumer Reports

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Buick Regal still has the quiet interior and comfortable ride you would expect from a Buick but it's also fun to drive.

I rented one of these beauties last year, and all I can say is that I fell in love with this car. It's quiet, powerful, & handles great. Buick really did an awesome job here! Go Buick!

"It's long been known for vinyl roofs, wired wheels, and tuft velour interiors..." - Maybe if you took a time machine into the 1970's! If THOSE three things are what come to someone's mind when they think of a Regal today, it's a personal problem more than it is a car's problem.

It is in on sale in UK; just go to your nearest Vauxhall dealer and ask for a test drive of the Insignia. We probably envy you more as you get the exclusive 325hp VXR model which isn't available across the Atlantic.

Because they buy lots of Buicks and we don't. Anything based off the previous Pontiac G8 (Holden Caprice) must be a good car, but GM doesn't want us to get our hands on a version of it. The Chevy Caprice is only available to police too. I guess the reasoning is that there is only a very small market for a large, rear-wheel drive sedan.

Does the regal have another sister car like from chevy? it looks familar but I can't seem to find much info beside the european cars. Whats with all the car companies digging into the leg room on the driver side, its rather quite annoying.

Not really. The closest is the Chevy Malibu, but as it is also based on the Epsilon platform which it shares and has different issues. The back seat is crowded in that car in comparison (not that this is roomy) and GM is going to redesign it quickly as it is not selling well because of that - they are discounted now to keep sales going if that is what you like.

95thRiflesOCI If you think they have lots of sister cars now, you should have seen it about 10-20+ years ago! Those were even worse, in some cases there was barely a distinction at all.

Opel or Vauxhall Insignia :) They are very common for business users in the UK because the tax rates are so low on the diesels

  • @Kit_Bear

MrRandomname1011 Yeah, the diesel is a far better choice, 80mpg freeway? (I think that's right) Anyway, we also have the 8 inch colour instrument display, a real must have for any driver, it's an optional extra but worth it. The only issue is that in order to play movies you need to convert them into mpeg 1 format to play them and the voice recognition struggles sometimes, other than that it's a very good car but I think that we Europeans are getting screwed because we pay more for the car and get less as standard. I have one so I can fairly comment on it without fear of contradiction.

  • @mountainhobo

Kit Bear "80mpg freeway" -- I assume you mean Imperial, not US gallons. Also, if you look around KZread, there are plenty of tests that show the European fuel efficiency numbers are mostly fantasy, and by a good margin. Still, diesel will certainly be more fuel efficient on the highway than regular gasoline version. Of course, in the US, with our rules and regulations, and with the high price of diesel, its value proposition is somewhat questionable.

Maestro_T Except for GM it makes money hand over fist as they were right to offer an upscale small SUV/crossover. Many think like you, but unfortunately, many buy it so it will be made for years to come (it gets pretty good fuel economy - 30 mpg highway).

  • @MaestroTJS

AcuraT No doubt these automakers make a lot of money off SUV's/CUV's. For example, a RAV4 or a CRV has about the same interior room as a hypothetical Corolla or Civic wagon, respectively, but they get to charge the price of a Camry and Accord. What annoys me is that they don't even give you the option of a wagon. European makers sell a sliver of the number of cars in North America as the domestics and Asians do, yet they offer (or used to offer) wagon versions of most of their cars plus SUV's/crossovers in addition to that. So I don't see what the excuse is, but it probably boils down to greed. Buick is another story since they don't sell much, but where are Ford/Chevy/Toyota wagons these days? For the actual usable space (interior and cargo room), CUV's don't get as good fuel economy as a similar-sized but lower-to-the-ground (and therefore more aerodynamic) vehicle would. The Encore is pretty tiny inside. And subjectively I find almost all of them ungainly and ugly, but obviously I am in the minority since people eat these things up.

Again, you are right. Unfortunately, most people want the SUV in the USA and won't buy a wagon. In Europe, it is not the case. Case in point - GM has tried at times offering a wagon. The latest attempt was the Cadillac CTS wagon. It is expensive but it did not sell at all compared to the sedan. Subaru used to offer the Legacy wagon. They stopped because all the cars they sold were sedans. However, their Outback which is higher off the ground (and gets worse fuel economy) is still sold and it sells well - they cannot make enough of them. Reason? Snow clearance. There are other examples - Acura sold the TSX wagon for a year - no traction - dropped from the market. Volvo stopped in the USA market. BMW stopped on the 5 series in the USA market and is now considering the same for the 3 series. Toyota current offers the Prius hybrid in wagon but sales are so bad it probably will stop next year. Americans are silly with their infatuation with SUVs. Plain and simple.

  • @MaestroTJS

AcuraT As Car and Driver said in one article a while back, it's not that Americans don't like wagons anymore--they just prefer the inferior high wagon variety, a.k.a, SUV's/crossovers. The snow clearance makes some sense in theory, but many of these vehicles are sold in places which don't get snow, so what the hell, right? I live in Canada and that barely even crosses my mind as a consideration. I don't even know what Acura and Cadillac were thinking with those wagons--not that I didn't like them (I did!), but those brands have never had wagons anyway. What about mainstream wagons instead? Honda used to have an Accord wagon, the Camry had a wagon, the Taurus had a wagon for years. Some auto journalists credit companies like VW and BMW for maximizing their profits by offering every kind of body style on a certain platform. Why the resistance from other makers? I would rather own an Accord wagon than an Outback, but I would buy an Outback any day before driving a CRV or a Pilot. I might be a minority but I don't think I'm alone. People can say fuel economy is high on their list of priorities when they shop for cars, but it obviously isn't. All the gains they've made in engine efficiency are wasted away by these un-aerodynamic vehicles. Sure, they are more efficient than they were a few years ago, but compare them to sedans with an equivalent interior volume and it's not very impressive. Oh well, I can rant forever and it won't change anything. ;)

How chintzy that they don't even provide a rubber thing on the deadpedal in the driver's footwell. Things like that make me question whether I'll ever venture out of German car territory.

The cars it goes against are much much more. BMW 3 series. Mercedes C class. Audi A4. It may not match them but it is discounted pretty heavily compared to them. For what you are getting it is not a bad price. Is it a BMW? No, but then again, I don't think that is what it is trying to be (that is the mission of the Cadillac ATS which comes much closer - and costs a lot more).

No, but their sales are up and that is what GM cares about I am sure. It has been the one division since the bankruptcy that every quarter sales have gone up - no exceptions. Buick is still pretty small but it sells a multiple of cars it sold before the bankruptcy. Even the ancient Buick Enclave I saw (dates back to 2008 with a mild refresh this year) is up in sales. Weird I guess but people like their discount luxury.

Even in the US. Buick sales are above Cadillac for the last two years and the gap is growing. Cadilac is now the smallest GM division in the USA. Before the bankruptcy, it was Buick. "Buick U.S. retail and total sales were highest since May 2005, up 10 percent and 11 percent year over year, respectively. Leading the brand’s retail and total sales increases, the Encore posted a 114 percent retail and 113 percent total year-over-year growth." That is not China numbers, it is USA. Shocking I know - trust me - I was shocked when I read this. The division this year is up over 10% overall as of May as all of the cars are drastcially up in sales (like last year).
