2013 Mercedes C300 W204 4Matic Transmission Service
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is a comprehensive DIY video explaining exactly how to do a transmission service on a 2013 Mercedes C300 4Matic W204 series. My car transmission is a 722.9, make sure you have the right code on your transmission before ordering parts. This video will work for most C300 models with the 3.5 liter engine from years 2008 to 2014. There are links below to find the parts you need at very reasonable prices. Please leave any questions in the remarks down below and I will do my best to answer them for you. If you like the video please give us a "Thumbs UP" or better yet subscribe to our channel.

That's a very nice video, time taken to explain
Appreciate you for this
Nice, extensive video, thanks for sharing. I have a 2010 W204. Two comments: 1. You don’t need those handheld temperature meters if you have even a basic scanner. Any scanner above $30 should have transmission temperature reading (as well as engine) and I think that’s more accurate. 2. I jack my car up often and although you have the back reinforced with a jack, I would put the jack stands at the Mercedes jack areas (the carved out areas). Looks like you put them on the control arms and technically, I really don’t think that’s as safe as it may seem. I’ve heard of a few instances (any car) where control arms have snapped due to various issues. And as you notice they are not flat areas. I use all 4 jack stand areas that the car provides.
Good job man thanks
Very clear instructions thank you for the video sir!

Great video. Thank you
Great video, details and a how to video.
Many thanks. About to do the mount but - need to do this service once we're out of -17f temps.
thanks, great info
Subbed + thumbs up!
Great video and thank you for taking the time and making the effort to do this it will give confidence to many aspiring DIY'ers. I know you didn't want to leave the fill hose and adapter connected because you didn't trust it, but if you had needed to add fluid it would have been so much easier. Also, be aware that MB specify that the fluid level is checked when the transmission temperature is at 45C in order that you get an accurate level. Once it is allowed to cool down the level will drop slightly as the fluid cools. Lastly, the torque convertor shares the same transmission fluid, if you don't change the TC fluid at the same time, you will be mixing old oil with new.

The level doesn't drop because of fluid cooling, it drops because the car opens a valve to the transmission cooler when the ATF temp reaches 45C. When you allow the ATF temp to cool below that critical temp, the valve shuts and more oil is contained in the pan and less in the cooler/lines. Therefore, it's quite possible that the car was underfilled because he adjusted the level to a trickle while the tranny cooler valve was closed at ~34C. All or part of that excess ATF that poured out with a laminar flow before going to a trickle quite possibly would have been in the cooler/cooler lines if the car were up to the 45C temp spec when he checked the level. That is a critical mistake and one of the reasons that spitballing won't work with this particular service. Additionally, you need a proper scan tool to read the ECU's value for the ATF temp (those IR guns are notoriously inaccurate, usually underestimating the temp by 3-5 degrees) and then you need to be precisely at 45C when you do the final level.
Thank you, it's the best detail video on this particular project ever

Hi john I could critisize you on a couple of tiny bits but hey well done man, you were brave took the challenge and you got the job done...and saved us all a shed load of $ ....The only thing I would have liked was a little more info...perhaps driving the car afterwards to confirm alls good....so how was the box after all working ?
Thanks for the detailed video! Nothing out there that compares! Few questions. When you get the tranny up to operating temperature do you have to shut off the car before removing the plug to see if there is any excess fluid? I've seen a different video where they keep the engine running with the adaptor on. Also, you mention letting it cool down after you get it up to 45C before checking the level. In a different video they check the level at 45C. What do you recommend and why the discrepancy?

Just tried to follow the Mercedes maintenance bulletin guidelines best as I could interpret them. It seems like everyone is a little different. With the plastic retainer in place, it is pretty clear about the excess fluid level. You just want it seeping. Far as temperature is concerned, that is how I interpreted it. If anyone knows better, I am always open minded for the best and most consistent results. Thanks for the questions.
Question sr How manny QT of Transmission fluid you use on that transmission ?
Thanks for the video. Very interesting. I am curious, this o-ring drain plug is not the same then the engin one ? Thanks. Do you plan to do the differential and converter liquide flush as well ? thanks again

The TC drain plug and the tranny pan drain plug are different sizes and thus their crush washers ("o-rings" in the video) are as well. Both need new crush washers when they are removed. The TC plug is usually replaced as well, while the tranny pan plug is maintained but with the aforementioned new crush washer.
Thank you. Great information. Do you not need to drain the transmission fluid out of the torque converter?

I have seen other videos that do but it is a lot of work. This was the most I was willing to take on and do myself.

Yes, unless you wan't 30% old/dirty/burnt ATF in the tranny for the next 70K miles until your next scheduled tranny service! It's not hard, just time consuming. For this model you would need to remove the aux oil pump (which is for the stop/start ECO feature) located immediately in front of the tranny pan by removing the three torx bolts and undoing the electrical connector. The TC drain plug window is located immediately under the aux pump. You then rotate the crankshaft clockwise from the top of the engine until the torque converter drain plug becomes visible down below the car in its window in the TC shell. Use an assistant for this step, ideally. When it rotates into view, open the plug and let it drain completely. New drain plug with crush washer then gets installed and you remount the aux pump. The TC draining is painfully slow and can take 15-20 minutes, so a lot of shops/dealerships won't do it. You will know if they skipped it if they only charge you for 6L of ATF. If you get charged for 9-10L then they drained the TC (provided that they aren't just gauging you, which happens, unfortunately---this is why you're doing it yourself!). You have been advised!
The position of those jack stands. Where they’re positioned can support the weight without damage?

You want just enough fluid coming out that is is dribbling steady but not stopped.
I could see dripping before and after you realised the fluid to the correct level. You would have noticed, I hope, but you didn't make mention of it.. Great tutorial of the transmission service. My c250 has 64000 klm and don't see in the service history that it has been ever done. I was reading somewhere that the fluid has to be changed at 4000 klm from new. I presume that includes the filter and bolts but I don't think mine was done. What are your thoughts? I presume at some stage you'll be doing the torque converter separately. Look forward to that. I am a subscriber to the channel now anyway and thanks for the content. 05/01/21

I have not read that but will see what I can find out. Each engine is different but it is generally 35,000 for performance vehicles and 70,000 for the others.
did you jack up the rear of the car against the differential before placing jack stand? Don't want damage

So in the latter part of the video and you were checking the final fill level (around 45:37). There was fluid dripping in front of the camera. It appeared to be the right side of the car roughly parallel to the transmission... What fluid was it that was dripping?

Every 70K is the new spec with the updated chamfered tranny pan, green overflow pipe and blue ATF. The old spec with the red ATF and white and black overflow pipes was 40K.
Hi John, where can I get that same pan? I have a 2011 c300. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure my 2013 will interchange with a 2011. You will need to check that out very carefully. A local Mercedes dealer will know.
I got question the auto parts autozone they say ATF is compatible with Mercedes’ but the oil is red is any problem with that sir I wait for you answer?

I’d pay the extra and use a brand that is specific for Mercedes.
@mihw8125
Жыл бұрын
The 236.15 spec is the most recent and will be blue regardless of brand. The red stuff is the old spec 236.14 and goes with the older pan and white and black overflow pipes. If you see a green overflow pipe, you have a newer model and you should use the blue ATF that meets the latest MB spec.
So did you torgue those bolt to a specific amount or did you just tighten them on the trans oil pan?

@mihw8125
Жыл бұрын
He appeared to reuse those six tranny pan stretch bolts, or perhaps just forgot to mention that he swapped them out off camera. To be clear, they are aluminum and should NOT be re-used. Most service kits will come with new bolts. They are torqued to 4 NM and then turned 180 degrees clockwise for the final torque spec to be reached safely. This is another area where spitballing will get you in trouble. Also shown incorrectly in the video was tightening the stretch bolts in anything other than a "star" pattern (think tightening lug nuts). You don't want that pan gasket skewed by unbalanced torqueing or you risk leaks and ATF contamination with road grit and moisture/rain.
Why didn't you drain the torque converter? Doesn't the old fluid contaminate the new fluid?
@JohnCanFixAnything
3 жыл бұрын
You can do it both ways.
@mihw8125
Жыл бұрын
Yes it does. It should be done. If you don't want to do it, take it to someone who can/will. Nobody will ever care as much about your vehicle as you do, that means insisting on going the "whole nine" on critical services like this. And by the whole nine, I mean 9L of ATF in. Question: Would you ever consider your engine oil changed in a 6 quart engine if you only put in 4 fresh quarts? Yeah, me neither.
So i have 115K miles on mine and i havent change the fluid yet.Is it time to do it ?Also im reading comments that its a lifetime ?
@JohnCanFixAnything
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely needs to be done. None are lifetime. The transmission fluid will always break down due to heat and friction. They just want you to take it into the dealer for them to do it.

Mb procedure don't recommand sealnt
@mihw8125
Жыл бұрын
No sealant needed, although some techs will silicone the gasket before placing it. This is not to MB spec though. Not shown in the video was carefully cleaning with a shop or lint-free towel the area on the tranny housing where the pan gasket seals. If there is any debris or oil on that area when the new gasket goes to place, you risk leaks and ATF contamination. This may have been done off camera. If not, it was a fairly serious omission. Finally, also not shown was using brake cleaner to clean (at least) the rim of the pan to assure that it doesn't have residual ATF or debris in the area where the new pan gasket will sit. If not done, that's another serious omission.
SHOW THE CAR??
Thanks
