Probably the biggest advantage of the 2013 Civic Si over the 1998 Integra Type-R: you don't have to worry about your 2013 Civic Si getting stolen.

If only the 2012-2015 Si had stiffer suspension/swaybars. It's really not so bad. Easily fixable, thankfully. You can see on the specs that Honda stiffened this Si a little bit each model year, but if only they had the conviction to make it great instead of just ok... don't be afraid of building in less understeer, a little twitchiness sells OK for Ford... don't be afraid to make it firmer, a stiff ride sells OK for Mazda on their speed3. Would be nice if it had more of a sports seat too, something like the quasi-Recaro in the USDM DC2R featured here or something like you get in the GTI, which is the logical rival to the Si IMO, with the full bucket Recaro-style seat (which Honda do very well IMO!) saved for the latest Type R model.

A decent runner on a very tight course or canyon but its never going to be a 911. Modern fwds are better but its still a limitation in track times maybe with the exception of single axle rally/ cross. The new type r is impressive on track...for a fwd...and until it stops and you get a better look at that ugly rear. That type r is a beauty though I doubt I could bring myself to track one.

Actually, most of it (same for most modern cars) is structural reinforcement! With the reinforced pillars (for roll over protection), side intrusion bars, and other reinforcements (for frontal offset test etc) of a modern car it's almost like modern cars almost have a quasi-roll cage built into them... they are much, much stiffer & safer than older cars.

The Diahatsu Mira, Suzuki Alto (Works edition), and Cappuccino are a couple competitors that are just as fun.

David Hoffnung I had a 1989 Alto Works RS/R. It was the most legal fun you could ever have in a car. You'd be pegging the 10k RPM rev limiter, rowing through the gear box, shifting into fourth out of the turns, and then look down and realize you haven't even gone faster than 60 KM/H. Seriously, it was like a BTCC race just to keep up with traffic. It was a blast to drive and it's probably one of the cars I've owned that I miss the most, but I wouldn't pay anymore than what I paid for that car and that was $1,000. The Honda Beats and Todays though, those things are just garbage. I could get on board if he was talking about an Autozam, but a Today or a Cappuccino? Fuck that. Plus those old kei cars have skyrocketed in price. Long gone are the days where you could get one for a grand. Nowadays you're looking at paying over 5 grand for a 20+ year old POS that makes all of 50hp and handles like crap.

I agree. Don't get me wrong I have an 08 Civic Si sedan and I love the K20 and I love my car. But the guy in this video even said it. The newer Si's don't make the power they should compared to the Integra Type R. And I almost was able to buy an RSX Type S but it didn't happen. They should be making at least 220 HP out of that 2.0 L k20 to compare to that 100 HP per liter. Honda is starting to lose to their competition.

Take this from a current 2013 Civic Si owner. The car is great as a daily and with just tires, is quite fast on track. I've been to 2 track days and have had guys that had an M2, M6, newer Mustang GT with 400HP, and even an RS3 come up to me with amazement with how fast I was taking corners. Some even had problems keeping up with me on track. What am I getting at? The comparison between this car and the Integra Type-R are just what they say, apples to oranges. But tire choice is also a huge factor in a car's handling. Running just 1 sec slower than the ITR on all seasons is actually not bad at all. With summer tires, they truly show what the car is capable of and with some serious extreme summer tires, they're a completely different car that can hang with much higher priced and higher HP cars. Currently have RE71Rs on my car and daily on some cheapo all seasons to get to and from track.

I miss my Integra. It was my first car and I had bought brand new. I have had many cars since then and still miss how connected to the road it felt. When the Vtec kicked in it was like music to my ears. With a few go fast goodies it was also quick. As they said in the video the cars back then were built to drive and were not filled with electronics. They were also easy to work on and quite reliable. I am worried about the new cars when they reach 15 years old like that type R. Will it even be worth fixing them or will we just have to throw them out or live with half the car not working? lol...

I'v never been a "Honda Guy" at all but I have always had a lot of respect for the their great 90's cars. It is a complete shame to see how far Honda has fallen in the affordable performance car market. The modern Honda's are all hideous boring commuter cars pretending to be fun but they are like soulless zombies of cars. Unfortunately that seems to be quite true with most affordable cars now, regardless of the brand. There are dozens of amazing sports cars from the 90's up to the early 2000's that the average person could afford. They were simple, great looking, reliable, and fun to drive. Over the last ten years the only true sports cars that are even worth paying attention to are all $40,000 or higher (mostly higher). I'm not a big Mustang fan but the current 5.0 is pretty much the only sports car I can think of that you can buy new in the sub $35,000 range that I would genuinely consider. Otherwise you are far better off searching for a very well maintained sports car from the 90's to early 2000's. You will save tons of money even after spending a little to fix a few of the worn out bits and even adding a few upgrades and still have just as much (or more fun) in the car for half the price of a new version.

The new Civic SI feels like an minivan compared to the more hard edged Civic and Integra performance models from years past. Oh, and they had double wishbone suspension up front as well. Look at this 2013 SI wobbling and heaving itself around a track. Looks like an obese man trying to run track. Oh, and an engine power gauge? Seriously? On a 200hp FF car? Who gives a shit. Gimmicky cars with a bunch of useless gadgets that I won't be able to fix in my garage and what dealer will charge me out the ass to fix. There's a purity in many of these older cars that I miss. I'm not really sure why anyone would consider the Civic Si to be "at the head of the class" at this point. Both the Ford Fiesta and Focus ST are better-handling. The Focus is faster and more practical, not to mention better-looking in my view. The VW GTI is also better, albeit a bit more expensive. I would love to have a 98 Type R though. Legendary car.

I am a Muscle car guy and will take any chance i get to punish some kid in a spring cut civic or a cherry bombed rsx or a body kit race looking integra. But i will give Honda credit. If they were to produce a V8 the way they produce their straight 4s, they would be unstoppable. I have a cobra putting out 390hp with a 4.6L. Do the math thats 84.7hp per liter, which in the muscle car world is very impressive. take the Integra type R at over 100hp per liter and thats just insane how efficient that is! The problem is however, without running any kind of boost, there isn't much improvement potential simply because of how efficient it already is. A $200 cam upgrade gives you 15hp in a Type R, whereas a $200 cam upgrade for me in my Cobra would give me 40hp. But ill give Honda the credit they deserve, I just don't understand why ricers always feel it necessary to race me in a 1.8L...??? Unless they are running boost and nitrous (that will probably kill the car in a years time), they will never have a chance...

Honda and pretty much all mass production car companies spend most of their resources building a car on technology. Pay attention to the next Honda Civic commercial you hear. well before cars were way slower... and mentioning HP and speed was important... now every modern car packs 150 200hp and it's irrelevant because tech to build those engines is not so expensive and most of drivers can have 150-200hp car. I'm all about acceleration and top speed and more hp but you know most drivers only care to get from point a to point b... My uncle is exactly like that. He used the car (he gave it to me when i got my licence) to get from point a to point b he didnt care about speed and how smooth it feels and what not. (seat leon 1.6 petrol sounds damn sexy yeah it packs 105hp but it's still good enough for me as a beginner :D)

I love the Type R Integra. Gotta disagree with how you phrased some things. You made it sound like the 1998 Integra (type R or otherwise) was intentionally made as a pure driving experience car to the exclusion of technology. The car had things like cruise control (though, your car didn't) and an advanced stereo with separate tweeters up front. The car had cup holders and power ports as well. Things like navigation wasn't yet something to expect in cars. Bluetooth wasn't being used, and cars at this time and in this price range didn't include connectivity for external radio sources (iPods - Hell at this time most iPod connectors were through cassette adapters). The car had power windows and locks which both add weight over manual set ups. The car also had a dimming switch for the internal instrument cluster which isn't really required. It even had an antenna that raised or lowered to further help with aerodynamics. What I'm getting at is that Honda basically through all of the technology of the day into the car.

I stand corrected. Did they reduce any of the other technology tools of the day? Maybe they cut rear defrost to save weight and lower the center of gravity? My point was the car basically had all of the toys of the day, and the car pretty much did. No cruise control to further connect the driver with the thrill of monotonous highway driving at set speeds, sure I get that. Porsche at that time was big on that stuff (it was dumb when they did it, too).

  • @zero11010

    @zero11010

    9 жыл бұрын

KardiFan2000 I appreciate the correction, but it changes nothing about the intent of my statement. The Integra had most of the common tech of the day. The Type R had almost all of the same tech that the more mundane Integra's had. It isn't like there were lane departure warnings left out, or back up cameras with proximity sensors and trajectory paths, or bluetooth stereo options, or windshield HUD options, or navigation options or whatever else. None of that was even an option. The Type R basically had the tech of the day.Omitting cruise control doesn't change that, and omitting a sunroof doesn't change that (as neither were exactly considered technological wonders with each being much more than 10 years old in cars at this price point and below). The Ariel Atom, now that's a car that made decisions to not include "current" tech in efforts to lighten the car. Modern day spiritual successors to the Integra Type R (which may include things like the Focus ST) still include most current modern tech and conveniences. You have to take that with the understanding that it's still a fairly inexpensive car, so you shouldn't expect to see the latest and greatest tech from the modern S class Mercedes in it.

zero11010 You are correct, but then at least in the U.S. this was an Acura. A luxury brand. Type-R or not an Acura with roll-up windows, no A/C or radio? Not that they had to tone the car down but I think some concessions had to be made to let the car even wear the badge. And for that matter, living with an S2000 as a DD, Honda was very adept in the nineties at conceding just enough, leaving just enough civility in their sporting offerings to make them liveable and quality. Personally, I like a manual soft top. No heavy electric motor, and one less thing to break. But, I can't deny I probably use the top in my S2K even more than I normally would because even if its cloudy or threatening rain, I can pull over and have the top up in a matter of seconds. And the glass window and rear defroster, it's extra weight as opposed to a vinyl back window but if you drive the car in colder months, it's really nice to have. The heat and A/C is extra weight, but then the heat rocks which means colder days can still be top down days. And today for example it was hot driving home. I was comfy on the highway, but in traffic a little assistance from the air con was very appreciated. Radio too, with a UK mod my car sounds rather nice and doesn't drone, but realistically I don't get to wind it up all the time, or even most of it, so having some non-gasoline fueled music is nice. You are right, they could have really stripped the Type-R out, as they could have stripped the S2000. The S2000 could probably have the Type-R's 2600 pound curb weight if they had, but they'd have sacrificed the things that make the car enjoyable on a regular basis. And to me, that's one of the greatest parts of owning my car, I get the fun and the enjoyment on a daily basis...

In America you can get a 2015 mustang v6 with a hundred more horsepower than the civic si and rear wheel drive for the same or less money. In Japan the mustang will cost you more, because it is taxed for its larger displacement. Unfortunately, most people that buy cars want electronics toys, comfort, room, quiet and could care less about performance, sound, cornering capability, etc.

And Honda is trying to catch the attention of a wide range of customers, not just car enthusiasts who wouldn't mind a car that is just a pure driving car. A pure driving car would generally be rough considering wind noise, weight reduction (less technological entertainment items), and hydraulic steering (electric steering more fuel efficient).

Who needs all that connectivity and Bluetooth bullshit. That Integra is the drivers car. The Civic is fat, slow, expensive, heavy, and gets shifty fuel mileage.

The Integra Interior is really ugly and I feel very poor for teh Acura owners, because the Honda Integra R has at least Bucket seats, momo wheel and titanium shiftknob stock. This interior is just nasty.

In 1998 that interior was considered very nice, that's 17 years ago. Compare any car interior from 17 years ago. I just sat in 2015 mustang gt and can tell you that the interior is light years better than a 1998 mustang

I dont think its nice for its time. Look at CRX 1990 SiR interior. Leather door panels, full leather seats with crx stiching, leather wheel.. much details and great quality. no noise after 25 years! my Integra R is make terrible nioses. i hate the door shut sound.. xD

The Intergra type had real bucket racing seats, I sat in a brand new one at the time and it looked fine with the stitching on the seats, arm rest, steer wheel and panels. Type R at the time didn't even come with AC to reduce on weight! For the most part all Acura at it's time and right now come with full leather interior excluding the Type R. My 97' intergra GS was slow but it had all the features without V-Tec. Right now, my TL 04 6-sp is a beast of a car. Acura will always have an advantage over the Honda over quality hands down.

I must agree with the integra guy in this video. i don't need those HP meters or shift lights to distract me from driving, my cellphone does that already. i wanna focus on how the engine sounds, and how the ride feels. After driving my 01 civic dx for 7 months, I realise what minimalism of the interior can do. heck, even my windows are manual. i know it's a slow car, but it's my first car and it's got a manual transmission, not gonna race with it, but it's fun to drive around in.

I bought a beat up 98 Integra RS non v-tec 1.8 for $800. that car ran hard with almost 300,000 miles there was no sign that it had lost any power. I would buy a type R over an Si today. After some brake and bondo work on a rusty panel and a $10 short ram I sold the car for 1,500 after having it for 2 years.

The current Accord Coupe & 4 door was one of Car & Driver's 10 best in 2013. (RE: December 2012 issue) The V-6 is a powerful addition in a different class of automobiles. Unfortunately, like the newer Acura's, the mass of the V-6 above the front wheels can't be completely negated to produce the handling obtained in the 90's (US models) with the lighter V-TEC 4 cylinder cars.
