2012 Honda Civic Si vs. 2012 MazdaSpeed3 Comparison

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Can Honda reclaim the crown as king of the front-wheel drive sport compact segment?
Unlike the Honda Civic Si's dominance of the sport compact scene during the '80s and '90s, these days the more powerful and aggressively styled MazdaSpeed3 rules the front-drive roost (and the VW Golf GTI isn't far behind).

I've owned both cars. The Mazda is faster and handles better. The Honda has a FAR superior transmission and is cheaper to own and operate. Both great in their own ways.

no comparison the todays civic is a small accord for the masses.its surprisingly cheaper then I thought.Honda cant make a bare knuckle bruiser from the factory and sell them like hotcakes so from a business standpoint Hondas just giving the vast market what it wants.ive made my mind up im getting the mazdaspeed 3.

I have a 2013 civic si and I actually really love it. The only things that sucked about it, (and im REALLY picky about cars), was the premium audio system's low end bass response. It was truly garbage compared to other cars in it's class. So, I just threw in a low profile and compact alpine mrv-m500 amp and an alpine sws-d4 12" type-s sub in a compact ported enclosure; problem more-than solved. Second thing that pisses me off is the insanely close-ratio gear box. I mean, you'll literally shift four times before you hit 38mph! It's just annoying and not necessary for the actual performance capabilities of the engine. Also, the final drive gear (6th) is advertised as a long 'over drive' gear which "allows for low RPMs in highway cruising", but that's anything BUT true. In fact, at 70mph, I'm running about 3,200RPM and at 80mph, nearly 4,000rpm. As a result, a realistic crusing top speed is NO MORE than 75mph if you want to save the life of your engine and your fuel tank. Also, this reduces top speed to about 100 mph at nearly 6,000rpm. Unfortunately, there's no cheap fix for this major annoyance. Apart from those two things, I LOVE the car!

To me the MS3 fits a weird niche between the Si and better cars. If you have the money, a WRX comes with AWD and similar power. It generally gets better time attack numbers as well.

+King Jack Sorry for the late reply, but the WRX is AWD and the MS3 is FWD so it would be an unfair comparison. However, in the future, when the current Gen Mazda 3 gets its speed counterpart, Mazda is saying it'll be AWD. That's when it will be fair to compare it to the WRX.

I agree it is unfair as the speed3 has more torque, stiffer chassis, stiffer suspension, better seats, shorter gearing with a more precise gearbox, and costs less then the wrx. The wrx would not have any shot of beating a speed3 apart from 0-60 test numbers. So you're right it is unfair.

For instance I was talking with my honda rep and he had a friend that bought an S2000. Modded it totally out to where it was basically a racecar. In the 4 years he owned it he told me he blew the motor up 3 times because he was pushing the engine way too far with the mods. Finally he listened to his friend the honda rep, and moved on to a more powerful more expensive car.

2000 Integra before and honestly I do miss it because I felt like I was sitting right on the pavement, It handled extremely well, nothings better for weaving highway traffic. Car was built really well to, Lasted to 180k and I did most of the maintenance myself. Now I have a speed 3 Its fun but not as comfortable, handling is good but tricky. Also I live in a crowded city now so few chances to really push it. Hard ride with no chance to floor it. Overall I like my MS3 but LOVED my old GSR.

@mmdaniels33 that depends on the motor, the f20c s2k motor holds up to 15 psi on stock internals which is more then the sti is boostn stock. Any motor thats high compression is gonna have those issues, but thats where u replace head gaskter, valve seals, springs, etc..., its not hard 2 do, and not expensive, its like that with every high compression motor. But hondas are known to handle alot of boost on stock motors, as for toyotas as well, besides Im saving up for the new ft-86, dream car.

i'm a die hard Honda fan, but in honesty, that new Si is just a compact car with a sport badge on it. there aren't too many things actually sporty about it. comparing a turbo to a NA is never really fair, in terms of lap times, but mad respect to the Mazdaspeed lineup. they're great cars.

  • @luminaeus
    @luminaeus12 жыл бұрын

@PumpUPdaBase Taxes and fees came to about $2000. The GTI isn't really a sports car by any measure so it shouldn't cost you any more to insure than a typical econo-box. As far as performance, it's between the Si and MS3, closer to the MS3. But in terms of refinement and cabin quality its up there with Audi and BMW. Even in a base model GTI nothing feels cheap.

My friend Matt owns the MS3 and He runs an e85 tune on methanol. I own the 2012 Si Sedan and I have dropped around 9k into it, completely redone the suspension - Buddy club coils, sway bars, tie bars, chassis brace and I also have a few mods such as I/E/Flashpro, Short throw shifter, pulley kit, Hasport engine mounts. His car is faster in a straight line but their is a mountain around here that we like to run and I can stay right on his ass all the way up. Overall for performance he has the better car but I will say that My car is way more fun to drive. I have never had anyone get out of the Si without a smile on their face. We also run that mountain with a 2015 focus st, 2005 sti, 2012 Gti, Trail blazer SS, Rx8, and a 2014 wrx and none of them can catch either of us.

Agreed, I actually got back from deployment last fall, and I was looking for a new car and test drove both the SI and Speed3. I will admit the clutch on the 3 takes a bit to get used to, but it is a blast to drive. And going off jsmorel86's comment, all of these people complaining why they compared a turbo vs. aspirated, it was the compact sports car comparison, and price range, and clearly the speed3 just gives you more power for the money. Also, looks are subjective, not objective.

All have been totaled or sold when done with them. And a coworker had a Mazda3 Speed and Tranny blew up at 35,000 miles. That kinda drove home I may wanna settle for just adding a few parts to make my Si the best then going with a mazda or another brand I'm not familiar with. Honda parts are easy to get and last forever though and that was big.

@ColdNapalm42 you could probably get the same power from other engines like srt4's, cobalt ss,evo's,sti's, etc. you might even be able to get more but honda engines are known to last and its amazing how much power you could get without rebuilding the motor. Its the power to weight ratio that gets them to do 10 and under in quarter mile. Not saying there the best cars but its amazing what car enthusiasts do with them.

@Xcorgi I don't know how true you could say that is. I have a Mazdaspeed6 with 98k all original miles (and counting), all put on by me. I've had no major issues with the car other than having to fix the rear driver's side axle because of a pothole I hit. Of course that has nothing to do with reliability and more my not seeing the pothole and the sheer force messing up the axle... the same of which can happen in a Honda.

I do partially agree with you. But they are also a direct comparison price wise. If you want a civic with zing i would still say take a look at the basic mazda 3. the basic 3 felt considerably quicker than the honda civic for daily driving under 4k rpm and in the corners when i test drove them, but also the mazda 3 was cheaper to get the same type of features such as power windows, power locks, and a sun roof. as for reliablity they are about the same. it honestly boils to personal preference

'Value' is somewhat subjective. I like speed and handling, but needed practicality at an affordable price. So for me, the MS3 was it. And for reasons I outlined before, I don't buy the argument that Hondas are more reliable. Today, the majority of cars will last if taken care of. My MS3 is going on 7 years. Still pulls strong as ever. No oil leaks, no turbo issues, no engine issues.

Now imagine what would happen to those 1/10's if you installed a turbo and proper exuast on the Si. I would say do the same for the MS3 but its all ready maxed out.

I had a 2.0 SI and just replaced it with a 2013 MS3 w/tech. These cars hardly belong in a comparison together. The tightly sprung and communicative MS3 devours the slalom at 72+ MPH, brakes like a banshee (no idea where the wooden comment is coming from), and puts a smile on your face in a straight line. My wife's Camry V6 with 4 passengers walks my Si like it's a minvan. Honda *must* do something to address the lack of power or they risk dropping out of the sport compact segment.

I have a 2010 Speed and it will demolish this SI...in fact I have several times. However, I think the Si is a really nice car and have been considering getting one because I drive my car a lot for work and want better mileage yet want something that's still fun to drive. I love the interior on it too.

Dude was tailgating on my drive to work and I was stuck behind traffic. Anyway right before road opened up to 4 lanes, i put it in 5th. When it opened up going uphill i nailed it. Wasn't even close. But, those things are heavy with the v6 not making much more hp than the speed.

What 2012 type R in america are you referring to? The SI is the sporty model just like the mazda speed 3. Honda's arent better by comparison very often.

My speed3 has 160,000 km/ 6year warranty/ roadside assistance. My repair costs are quite low. Quite. (I haven't had any yet, but I'm well covered, is what I'm saying)

@TheJuniorCop You missed my point. My comment was to get people to think about more than "2 secs" (which is actually closer to 2.6 secs.). People were saying "it has a turbo and only won by 2 seconds?!" using only time to judge distance. And my point wasn't to say they are doing 100mph, my point was that 2 seconds could be slaughter depending on how fast they were going. My 350hp Mazdaspeed6 is "only 2 seconds" behind a Z06 in the 1/4 mile. Might not sound that bad.

I got a 12 which is the same except for new interior. You'll love it. Kills stock stangs so don't get scared unless a shelby or GT pulls up next to you.
