2012 Honda NC700X Review - Big fun at a small price

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Honda's taking a risk with the NC700X, hoping it will attract new and returning riders. While its looks are definitely polarizing, its practicality, performance, comfort and value can't be overlooked.
www.motorcycle.com/manufacture...
In today's economic climate, motorcycle manufacturers are well aware consumers are looking to get the most value for their hard-earned dollar. At the same time, OEMs are trying to introduce new riders to the sport. With the NC700X, Honda believes the way to do both is to bring back the UJM, or Universal Japanese Motorcycle.

    For those who say this bike sucks, you are probably those sports bike rider who use the massive power of race bike to commute. And rev it at stop lights.

    I have two bikes an a 2014 FJR & a 2012 NC 700X which I have set up as a somewhat duel-purpose bike. Although it is really not one I have ridden part of the TAT out in Colorado with it & it preformed flawlessly. I get 62 to 65 mph & have gotten as high as 72. Is it powerful ?? Of course not but it is without a doubt a FUN bike to ride. Because the engine is so low & the gas tank under the seat it has a very low center of gravity & thus is a joy to flick back & forth in the curves. I have taken it on a 28 day 9,000 mile trip out west (from Florida) & it is as solid as a rock. Would I buy another one - yes. Would I recommend it - yes. Is it for everyone one - no. As with every bike there are + & - but it is a very enjoyable motorcycle. Just an opinion of a man who is 71 (yoa)

    Over a year riding this bike, done 24k KM (15K miles) use it every day to work, and on weekends to a light travel. I definatly recommend this bike. My average is 3.5L/100Km (67MPG). Just remember is not a sport a bike! just 50HP. But comfortable doing 140/160Km/h (85/100mph) on high way's.

    Have you ever seen dyno sheets on this bike, it makes very little hp, but the TQ is decent. I've seen dyno specs say it makes only 39+ rwhp, it surprised me ?

  • @Hooverdarnit

    @Hooverdarnit

    ***** That's low. 700cc should make at least 45 hp. Compression is probably not very high and probably uses regular gas. I hear it'll still go over a 100 mph though.

  • @ylism

    That is what I thought as well, maybe even more, but a few dynos, have said otherwise ? I don't get it either. The HP & TQ lines crossed at 5250 rpm just like they are suppose to also, so they read the same numbers; that is one way to tell if the dyno is off, or bogus, if they read differently. Don't forget I said some not all..!

    I have just given this bike a 8 mile test ride having never ridden a motorcycle before. I have a twist and go vespa GTS 300. Bike very easy to ride and ideal for my 5 foot 8 inch height. My main criticism was that in auto mode it would tend to change quickly to 5th or 6th gear in town. You can of course use the paddles to go up and down the ratios if you wish. Overall a very good package here in the UK.

    Surprised you didn't mention the mpg or that it needs relatively infrequent servicing or the ABS. I don't think ABS comes with the non DCT version though - shame :( It's definitely on my list of bikes to get. It makes me laugh when riders state it's a beginners bike because it hasn't 140HP - I've been riding for decades and see it as simply a bike aimed at the type of riding 95% of us actually do. I want one.

    I think part of the reason why some people consider it beginner friendly is because it doesn't have any unexpected surges in the power curve and the engine and gas tank configuration puts the weight down low.

    Michael Robinson - exactly. This is a great bike for people interested in fuel economy, smooth ride and enough power to make a nice touring bike. A record-breaker on the track it's not, and I find it humorous that some need to run it down for that. That's like trashing a Corolla because it doesn't perform like a Porsche 918 Spyder. Apples and oranges, people. I recently picked up a 2014 model, the one with the traditional 6-speed manual transmission (NC700X). And I'm not a beginner. I got my first bike in 1971 and recently sold two others that I had for about 13 years. This bike could be good for a beginner though because it's very well balanced with a low center of gravity and isn't going to throw them off the bike when they twist the throttle. Those who want mega speed and power should look elsewhere. Those who want something economical and sensible just might be in the right place.

    Aren't you in the States? Since when have "naked" bikes done well here? They are trying to tap into the entry-level "adventure" segment with the X model. I think it was a good choice. The S doesn't really offer anything but more style and it's less practical in the process.

    i don't get the appeal of the DCT push-button transmission. Does it idle in gear? When would I want to push the button for neutral? How about low-speed stuff where I would normally be using the clutch's friction zone? I like the idea of a water-cooled, vertical- twin, lotsa storage, bargain bike, but the tinker-toy push-button Xmission sounds like the answer to a question no one asked.

  • @robinmcphail34

    @robinmcphail34

    Yes ,idles in gear like a C50/90. I was worried about stalling when the revs drop, but it just chugs its way through slow corners. When you switch it off, it's default position is neutral when you start it up. I think putting the stand down also defaults to neutral also. It's all very clever and easy to live with. Also, you can't hit the rev limiter in auto mode.
