Pretty surreal watching a talent-packed race like this over a decade later. Xavier exhibits all this promise but to my knowledge never really runs another time like this. Meanwhile, several of the contenders he bests here go on to become Olympic medalists and WR holders. Performance is such a fickle thing and destiny is even stranger.

As I saw your comment I recalled the Kelsinki World Championships when Bolt and Gay were in the 200m final and neither won. I remember that Gatlin won, Wallace Spearmon in second, John Capel in third, Tyson Gay in fourth, and Bolt pulled up with a hamstring and finished last although he was nineteen at the time..........................

Xavier Carter (The “Marcus Dupree” of track), age 20 in this race, had Bolt’s number. They were close to the same age, with Carter being about 8-9 months older. Carter had just won the NCAA 100m & 400m dashes and then drops the 2nd fastest 200m (it was 2nd fastest when the race was conducted back in 2006) race in 19.63. ***Don’t quote me on this but I think Carter was undefeated against Bolt*** Carter had range from 100m to 400m and I think history would be different if he’d maintained his focus on track. Prodigious talent in X-Man.

No prelims in Lausanne, an annual invitational meet on the Golden League/Diamond League tour. XC had great physical potential, but attempting to compare him to a 2007-2013 Bolt, by using this race, then extrapolating over time, is a fool's errand. Not only are improvements in elite sprinting difficult to predict, even tiny improvements at this level require; an elite work ethic, an almost religious off track zeal in one's lifestyle, subtle improvements in mechanics, a dedicated mental focus (on and off the track) and luck with injuries, ALL must merge to remain consistent and/or improve at this level of competition. Combine XC dislocating his knee in the 200m semis @ the USTAFF nationals in 2007 and a series of off track criminal lifestyle choices, combined to end a potentially fabulous career. Track is littered with such stories. Research the life of 800m phenom David Mack, for a fascinating cautionary tale. Mack's 1985 time of 1:43.35, still makes him the 5th fastest American man all time, But, life long gang affiliations, even when a member of the LAPD (after injuries ended his track career in '87), led Mack to be convicted of armed robbery (14 years in prison) of over $700K. DM was also suspected (but never charged) in the murder of The Notorious B.I.G..

X-Man was undefeated against Bolt. I fully agree with what you have stated. With that said, X-Carter had just won the 100m & 400m at the NCAA meet and then dropped this 19.63 at age 20. He was the most talented overall sprinter I’d ever seen at that age, 20 in this race. Watch when he blows by Bolt and how Bolt looks over in despair. Bolt was intimidated by X-Man due to their prior race history.

But guess what bolt push pas that and accomplished great things Unlike Xavier Bolt could have ran way faster than 19.19 Back scoliosis problem his entire career, injuries in 2009 car crash, 2010 sore Achilles tendon, 2011 hamstring injury, 2012 hamstring injury, 2013 hamstring injury, 2014 hamstring injury, 2016 hamstring injury, 2017 bolt was pressure by his fans to run another year despite being less motivated to run I have not even get to the slowing down, untie shoe lace 2008 100 meter, poor start 2012 100 meter, 2009 100 meter looking around to see where Tyson gay is at. Bolt also eat alot of nuggets which would be considered unhealthy for athletes during the Olympics and still was able to break the world record. Bolt had more talent in the sprints than Carter. Lane 8 is the best and fastest lane! I never understood why people say that lane 8 is a bad lane. If you're concentrating on others then you're not going to run fast. Lane 8 you just focus on you & your race. Lane 1 is the slowest lane for obvious reasons, it's tighter & the most curvature & obviously lane 8 has the least curvature.

Switzerland doesn't really produce any elite top track athletes, so for organizers of the sport who love it and want to keep hosting the meet...and they get whatever clout comes along with it.

I'll let you figure it out. Carter probably ran 100/200/400 prelims & semis before this race, while Bolt simply ran 100/200. Thus, Carter would destroy Bolt in the 200m if he dropped either the 100 or 400. Carter went to prison not too long after this race, which Bolt and all the others sprinters worldwide celebrated, and continue to be thankful for.
