In retrospect, i didn’t do the best job explaining the actual failure. The base model cluster goes into trucks with a column shifter. The column shifter supplies a ground path for the park sense signal to the base model cluster. Because this had a floor shifter that input didn’t exist. But, the platinum cluster doesn’t require that same park sense circuit to go to sleep. Hope that better explains what i found. Just the wrong cluster installed.

Tough when you go and a cluster is changed and replaced with the incorrect one. But rarely is the full truth revealed until later.

Yeah, this vehicle took 3 trips. Sucks because I feel like I was "right" but I ended up eating a lot of diagnostic time because I wasn't 100% right when I said the cluster was bad.

Super common for the micro switch on the floor shifter to go bad and keep the cluster alive because it doesn’t think it’s in park. You can buy the micro switch places so you don’t have to buy the whole shifter.

So why didn't the new cluster you bought work? Did you just get the same part number off of the old cluster (the wrong cluster)? On weird parts like that, I usually call in to a dealer with the Vin and get the exact part number for the truck-- and then I happily tell them never mind- because their prices are always highway robbery.. But at least then I have the actual part number I need and can cross reference to used or salvaged parts, etc. That's how I usually do it. A strange side note though- I have a 2002 F350 7.3L diesel 6spd manual 4x4 and my sticker on the door doesn't even show what kind of axle I have. (it also says it's a "incomplete manufacturing"-- so it was a cab and chassis to begin with). So I call into the dealer with my VIN and even they can't tell me what kind of axles I have on my truck. :) So it doesn't always work.

So when they got the new cluster they just matched the part numbers that were on the cluster. So they got the wrong one again.

I can see this being a real trap as a mobile. You will get way more of these cars that someone, or multiple someones have had a crack at before you even start looking at it. So you're not only diagnosing the initial complaint, but will likely have to reverse poor diagnosis practices, parts cannon, rubbish aftermarket parts etc. = Tough. But I guess you just need to be firm with charging for ALL of your time and hope to deal with shops that just leave the car for you, from the get go. You sound like you're not loving mobile life? Not looking to pry but are you not finding it better than dealer life?

Generally, I LOVE mobile life I love working towards my dreams, instead of working toward unobtainable goals set by a service manager who has to hit his unobtainable goals set by a billionaire owner haha The problem is, I’m “too busy” Yeah, the flip side is worse. But it’s stressful trying to get everything done, every day.
