My 150k 2011 limited runs like new. The v6 is a rocket engine and torque monster. Best car I ever owned.

I am currently driving 2007 RAV4, the 2.4L 4 cylinder is powerful enough for almost all situation. No need for 6 cylinder for such small SUV. The 4 cyl engine is so much easier to work with.

The 2.4L had some issues not sure if you can get it if the updated 2.5L engine but the v6 is definitely the way to go over the 2.4L

I only like the spare tire on the back because it is a full size spare, other wise the hinged side opening tail gate can be a nuisance pulling a trailer or using a hitch mounted luggage carrier.

I'm an older person (late 50's) and the back full size spare is "traditional" to me - yes, I like it in exchange for all that compartment space under the rear floor.

I own a 2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited V6 4WD w/ JBL Audio and I love it. This is the best car I have ever owned. I have done two family trips down to Florida from NYC without anyone complaining about being uncomfortable. It is very comfortable and fast. 0-60 mph comes @ around 6.5 sec. I have done a lot of upgrades to my RAV4. I upgraded the stock JBL radio to a Pioneer AVH4200NEX 7" touch screen radio. Kept the factory JBL speakers which sound great. I upgraded my suspension to the stock sport model suspension which are technically Tokico blue front struts and Tokico blue rear shocks. I prefer the sportier stiffer feel of the sport suspension over the more comfy limited suspension. I also upgraded my stock 17" x 7.0" limited wheels to the stock 18" x 7.5" sport wheels riding on Michelin Permier LTX 235 55 R18 tires. Upgrades my brakes to Akebono ProAct pads and StopTech slotted rotors along with Mogul Dot4 racing brake fluid. These upgraded make a night and day difference in ride handling and braking on an otherwise boring car. My RAV4 is technically a RAV4 Limited/Sport V6 4WD and is truly one of a kind. Because of the 269HP V6, I would not change it for a brand new 2017 model.

man i wish I had this one, i got the 2008 4 cylinder and its slow as fuuuuuuuuck. and she's all creaky . interior is cheap af, she looks real good on the outside . im at 167k

I purchased my 2009 RAV4 V6 LIMITED AWD with a FWD lock system this past winter it only had 70,000 . I live in a townhouse however my next door neighbor and I share a drive way that leads to our garages. I absolutely love the rear door and how it opens because of the privacy it gives me & the fact I don't have to worry about the door hitting against the top of my garage door when I'm using it. This car has got some serious POWER with the V6 engine. I live in Colorado so I've had some major snow storms to drive in and I must say I've never felt more safer driving this SUV. Even though my car is 10 years old it's runs solid. I ABSOLUTLY love this car and plan on having it for another 10 years : -)

It's an AWD vehicle I've only had to switch to lock 4WD in steep inclines with deep snow issues only because it makes me feel safer. However when you hit 25mph it will automatic go back to AWD.

Even those without the spare tire on the back still have the hidden compartment. The "sport appearance package" remove the spare tire completely and instead the car came new with 4 run flat tires and no spare at all.

The SAP (Sport Appearance Package) did not "hide" the spare tire, it removed it entirely. That configuration came with runflat tires, with no spare tire option at all. Also, without the 3rd-row seats, there is a large storage compartment under the rear floor that the 3rd row seats would otherwise fold down into. That hidden storage space was a significant reason why I bought my RAV4 V6 Limited.

I'm feverishly seeking to purchase a 2011/2012 V6 RAV4. I know it'll get a little less gas mileage than the 1999 4cyl Camry (that died from low cyl., compression), but will help with my 2 degenerative back discs as the entry and exit in the RAV4 is much easier for my back.

I have had a 2011 RAV4 Limited with a V6 engine for ten years. I bought brand new. Fantastic car. Like a jet when you need speed. I have thought about upgrading, but I am so in love with the discontinued V6 that I won’t get rid of it. It will be awhile before I trade it in.

2010 limited v6. 188,000 love it still. Fast, take care of it. Even after recalls. I would buy it again!!

The rear door hinge makes sense if you remember that this is Japanese, they drive on the left same as in UK... The door means the opening is very large and has a low load sill.... Pity they didn't change the door around for USA

@@maximusextreme3725 I won't say we never park curbside. It's almost always in a parking lot or our driveway. We like the full-size spare on the back where it's accessible and leaves more storage room inside the vehicle.

My 2011 base model has 180,000 miles on it and it has been the best and most dependable vehicle I have ever had! I will forever buy Toyota/Lexus!

I’m 20 and I just bought a 2012 rav 4 with 90k miles and will be living in Vermont during the next year for school, and I love what I’m seeing about this car in the comments

@@gmedrano95 very reliable and amazing in the snow if you live where it snows, only downside Is the ride is isn’t the smoothest of the road is bad

Also, the 3rd generation RAV4 actually ran from model year 2006 through 2012, though there was a significant change beginning in 2009 for the 4-cylinder versions when the 2.4L engine was replaced with a new 2.5L engine.

You do lose some under the floor storage by opting for the third row seating... I'm happy this car is on your halo list. We have 43,800 miles on our 2009 FWD four cylinder model and love it.

Nice review!! Just bought my wife the 2011 RAV4 Limited Edition with 67,000 miles certified from Toyota. We have been blown away by how quiet this SUV rides. I mean we could barely hear anything outside even when the wind was blowing at 30 mph. It has enough power to slam your back to the wall lol. Seriously tho it has more power than she needs but great for passing cars when needed. Breaking was dang good too. We'll easily be able to run this another 15 years plus. We just traded our 1997 six Sidekick in for this at 170000 miles & this RAVE4 is like dream compared to that one. Also they I had them throw in the warranty at no cost-had to haggle for that but it was worth bantering for an hour lol. Next step is to install remote start in this bad boy & it'll be good to go for 15 years easily!

Are there particular years between 2006-2012 for the RAV4 that had more problems than other years? I appreciate your input about how the V6 doesn’t slow down the RAV4 like I’ve heard others say that happens with CRV’s. Anyway it’s interesting that you’re probably not too far from my area in Ventura County. Looking for used car for our first time driver. But taking our time. I appreciate your vids.

Looks like my 2008 Limited V6. It's physics for the MPG. Easier to keep rolling and less stress keeping it going. It would have been impossible for my wife to lift a rear hatch with a spare tire mounted on it. The 4 cylinder burns oil due to the thin rings.

I bought a then - new Silver 2006 Toyota RAV4 with the powerful 268 hp V6 and 3rd row seat. Such a great investment! I have almost 165,000 miles and still runs very strong. Some people are surprised at how quick it is off the line and I did get my RAV up to 125 mph and it was still pulling. The transmission is also very strong. I haven't had any problems and it still shifts beautifully, even at that speed. The only reason I slowed down (other than breaking the law) was because the tires are only rated up to that speed. You're right about the gas mileage - but sometimes I even get up to 29 mpg doing 70 mph with the AC on. I get an average of 22-23 mpg. Most of the times, I drive it easy. I've done my own maintenance - changed the oil religiously every 3500 miles, transmission filter and fluid once, replaced the brake pads and rotors all the way around a couple of times, 1 ignition coil and the water pump. That water pump was a challenge, but all things considered, this 3rd generation RAV4 is very reliable and definitely my favorite generation. Even better than the current generation because it doesn't come with the V6 or 3rd row seats. If anyone is looking for a small SUV, this is the one to strongly consider above the rest!

It is a good car though not sure if 06 is best...I have same car at 222k miles on stock water pump. Had issues with coils and oil line twice busted but Toyota covered out of warranty. I think the later year v6 Rav they got a few of these issues resolved. Mines started to leak oil though unfortunately and I think it was due to running out of oil twice due to the bad design of the oil line.

@@markg999 Well, being the first year of the 3rd Gen RAV4, there were several recalls , all being minor, which you were probably sent several notices and had done at the dealership. The only thing that really annoys me about my RAV is the steering coupling at the rack and pinion. I had the dealership do the recall on it, but I think all they did was tighten it. Well, it loosened up again and still making a noise. Are you having the same problem? That's why I do my own basic work, like replacing the ignition coils,which involves removing the intake manifold, and water pump. Having said this, I love this SUV. Still pulls strong of the line and in passing. Toyota did this engine right. 269HP, no leaks, really good gas mileage, and great reliability. I won't sell my RAV; I will most likely have a friend, a Toyota and Nissan certified technician, change the timing chain, rebuild the trans, and recalibrate the timing and ECU to get the same 306 HP that Lexus is getting in their cars and SUVs. Yeah, I agree with you that the 06 is not the best year, but I wouldn't trade mine for a later 3rd Gen. Best of luck to you and your RAV.

@@valianttmt8044 I could do coils not removing water pump...became easy job for me like 30 mins or so ha. Yea my steering creaked just got use to it. It was really a great vehicle...ended up trading in this week due to oil leak...could have lasted maybe years or months not sure traded in while still working well. Goodluck with your Rav.

I have a 09 v6 Sport only dislike is the mpg I drive mostly city and getting about 13mpg I’m not sure if that’s normal or it might be due to something else

I have the 4cyl. The only issue that I have is that dreaded cold start rattle. I'm taking it in for the repair on Monday. I've had mine for 2 yrs. It's got 160,000 miles on it. Other than that cold start rattle it's a really good little SUV. For some reason the factory battery caps came off between oil changes. It probably got too hot in the engine compartment over the summer. If that's a common problem Idk. I did the brakes at 125,000 and, I also get a 4 wheel alignment once a year. I'm keeping this until the wheels fall off!!!lol!!! I love the spare on the door because it's right there!!! The hidden spare you have to crawl under the vehicle to get it out.

Yeah we bought 2008 Rav4 all wheel 4 cyl pre owned with 10 years or 100,000 miles from dealer. A lot of manufacturer recalls early on but, still great SUV. The biggest recall was oil consumption it was burning a qt of oil every 1100 miles since day one. Thank God we had the extended warranty. After repeated times to dealer for the oil they finally honored the recall & replaced water pump also for free!!!!

I have and love my 2010 RAV4 Sport. 165k miles, and they just looked at it and said, "Eh, I guess it needs new spark plugs?...” This car has been essential in my personal chef/catering business, and has never let me down! It hauls a ton, is tough as nails, and super dependable. This is a great car I can't recommend highly enough! I fully plan on taking it to 250k miles, and I know it will make it!

Easily, my 2000 has almost 300k and still hums like it just rolled off the factory .

I have a 2012 Toyota RAV-4 in Black Forest pearl ..mine is in the base trim level but has a slightly different interior than the one displayed by this car also I prefer the spare tire on the back because it is very convenient I don’t have to get down on the ground at all to get my spare tire also another note I have is that while the 4 cylinder isn’t as quick as the V6 cylinder but it gets better gas milage and for what it needs to do it gets the job done also on a similar note the FWD model is just as good as the AWD model I frequently go camping and I’ve never gotten stuck even though I have the FWD model .. on road performance isn’t sacrificed either due to the FWD model having a viscous limited slip differential

Greg, I have a ‘12 RAV4. Do I need to replace the radiator cooling fan and starter motor?

I have a 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6. I absolutely love my car, except when in 4WD when I get to 25 mph, it disengages into fwd mode, which really sucks when I’m having a travel to Seattle or MT during the winter months. But I LOVE the 269 hp V6. My little Rav will flat out get up and move.

just a heads up the 4wd on these cars acts like an awd system. the lock just attempts to send MORE power to the rear wheel but the awd system is engaged at all speeds.

Yeah it’s not necessary to have the V6. Owning a AwD or 4WD is for driving in rough conditions not race car driving .

09 base model with v6 awd. it's seen me through some of america's most beautiful (and remote) landscapes without a worry as to its dependability, while pulling a fully loaded uhaul trailer

The best time to undercoat is when the vehicle is new. My 09 Taco had a recall for rust frame. Even though my truck had very minor rust. The dealership solution was to spray over dirt & grease for free. I can see evidence of rust under the undercoat. That's what happens when a vehicle expose NJ weather.

I like the tire on the back, especially with the tire not being exposed, I like the tire cover that matches the car instead of a black tire, plus it you think about it, it can act as a guard during a accident from the rear.

I got the same one 147 k still runs like a champ.

With regards to the rear door hatch swinging towards the curb in North America, I think since this was sold in Japan first, they built that aspect of it for RHD markets. For LHD exports, Toyota met the minimum requirements (Steering wheel on the left side, MPH as the pre-dominant font reading on the speedometer for the US market, and meeting crash standards at that time). The only Toyota with the rear swinging hatch door that opened away from the curb in NA is the 07-14 Toyota FJ Cruiser. But that car was built for the North American market only initially.

The side swinging rear hatch is great for tall people. Nothing worse than crouching everytime to take something out.

I am planning to buy 2011 sienna, it has 110 k miles. I like to replace the transmission oil and filter ! Any suggestion or advice, please. Currently I have 2004 camery 2.4 L. It has 253k miles. I brought in 2011 when it has 62k miles. Last year I had replaced all 4 shocks( full assembly), transmission oil and filter, & all liquids flush. Few days ago on 11-11-19 I had replace all 4 breaks, transmission oil , catalytic converter , O2 sensor , thermostat sensor, temperate sensor. VALVOLINE high miles OIL 10w-40. & spark plugs. After that cars is flying. It soo light. But only thing is It don't have pickup like other cars. I have all documents since I bought the car, No accident till now

The third row seat is an extremely rare option. Toyota discontinued it in the later years so that the Rav4 would not compete with the Highlander. I believe it was only availabe in the first few years of this generation of Rav4.

I'm looking at a 2008 RAV4 with 177,000 miles for $4,000, would you recommend this? Also, would you recommend this suv for a bigger person? I'm a big guy and need some room, I've heard toyotas are roomy but I was curious about this one. Is the driver seat similar in size to a 2011 buick enclave? I can fit in those quite well and they feel very roomy once inside.

Depends... Service records available? How often was oil changed? Has ATF ever been changed? Do you have a mechanic that can give it the once over?

The reason the rear door opens that way is because they drive on the right in Japan, so it works for them. Same as my 2005 Honda CR-V. Both cars are also made in Japan. Cars built in Japan are known for better quality. They don't just slap them together like car plants in Mexico. The Japanese take pride in their work. It's part of their culture.

I have a 2012 RAV4 Limited-the main reason we bought it was for the V-6 engine. This car is like a rocket coming from a 2005 Pontiac Vibe with the venerable but under powered 1.8 engine. Honest mileage for the V-6 is about 25 MPG at 70 mph. Thanks for the great review.

Bought an 11 and I like it more than my 17 impala fully loaded. The jbl stereo has more low end than the Bose in impala and I love the rear gate. If you have to worry about the rear gate person behind is way too close.

I bought one of these base models like 2011 for 19,000 and change. Man I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of it. Great car

Either way, you would move to the correct side before opening the door so it's not really a problem.

Is there a video out there for generation 4, gen 5? I'm looking to get something like a 2016, 17 or perhaps 2018 model RAV4. I just want to know what I'm in for, problems, if any, Etc.

Consumer Reports give up to 2018's, 5 out of 5 for reliability. Not so much for 2019 to 2020's. I like my 2018!

Not all the Toyota models had the third row that folds flat. The Land Cruiser didn't get it until 2022.

Your Car Angel - Do you have any 2006/2007 Toyota Highlander for sale. Well I need one as where I live most are abused and have high mileage. Don't know what it will cost to ship it to Ocala, Florida. I had a 2006 white with extra seating. Had two hundred and 15 thousand miles and I sold it. Had no major problems just routine maintenance and I really missed it. Thanks !

Take it to a transmission shop. They would live to find something wrong with it.

If you make the rear door a hatch, the struts have to support the weight of the tire. That costs more, which is a sin in production.

i wish we could switch the hinges around like we do on refrigerator doors..

Do you have Toyota Sienna in your reviews?

Disagree with a lot. The swinging door and back tire setup is what the rav was known for. A full sized tire, even with the base model. Not a dinky donut. And just like most people who have actually owned one of these, having a 4 vs 6 is a big deal. Always go with the four, if you care about mileage more than speed.

Anyone know how common for that oil line to break on these are? I always see complaints about it but surely it cant be that common can it?

Have a earlier year 06 with the V6.....it is really almost for me atleast the perfect type of vehicle..has speed with the v6, good gas mileage 27 on hwy and plenty of room in the rear and it is reliable except for a oil leak thats developed....have 220k miles now. I am having a hard time finding what I need to replace it with since not many vehicles can do all of these things.

Just fix the oil leak! I did that on my camry around 200k miles and now im around 220k. Still drives perfectly straight and smooth, runs quiet too. Im looking to get something like one of these rav4 or highlanders. Need more room for my job

I agree with Gregg, I have already thought of that, I just worry if ya ever get rear ended you will damage the vehicle and the spare tire..I will settle with putting groceries in the 2nd row seats..Also, i have been seeing people put some type of rack on top of their Rav4's and putting the spare tire there. I like the idea..I could not find " The Sport Appearence Package" vehicle"...I want to add that I belong to a facebook group that are Toyota Rav4 Owners. Giving advice to other Toyota Rav4 owners..there were many people saying the 6 cycl. are gas hogs..

How much did you pay for 2015?

I have this car 2011 Toyota rav4 it's the basic one 4 cylinder and I have 163,000 miles on it, I bought it used at 35,000 miles never had an engine problem once only changed the wheel bearing 2 times and the coolant hose but the transmission is dead on fucking *P* E *R* F *E* C *T*

Just bought one of these bad boys today for 12,000 really clean condition and only 26,000 miles. It's not the V6 but I'm happy nonetheless

We bought our 2009 four cylinder base model just 15 months ago when it only had 18,646 miles on it. We put 25,000 more on it since then. Getting close to 30 mpg. We paid $12,500.

@@njsongwriter that's awesome! I think we got amazing value I haven't had any problems yet but the AC needing charged. It'll be fun driving it into the ground and seeing how long it can last Toyotas don't like to die

Did you research low mileage? Carfax gives mileage history. Did they produce main. Records with mileage. Low mileage is common fraud area.

@@carlhammill5774 Not sure who your comment is addressed to but we did ask the dealer for a CarFax report and it showed every registration event and inspection record down through the years with mileage and it was only a one owner vehicle. There was nothing that looked suspicious in the report. Plus the underside of the vehicle looked near new without a spec of rust anywhere.

I just came across one being sold by me for $5900 it is a 2011 base model with 130k miles and im seriously thinking of buying it.

I have a UK 2007 Rav 4 XT5 Petrol Automatic, Its has a Sunroof and all the extras, except parking sensors for some reason

so many people fail to mention that you can sleep in this bitch with the seats folded down . I think up to a 6'4" person can lay flat with a mattress or mat.

i believe the rear door opens to the right is because it is sold in countries that drive on the opposite of the road. too bad one was not designed for the north american car market one more issue is that for a awd utility vehicle there is no sufficient under body shielding for gas tank , engine and transmission . they are vulnerable to damage on rough roads

How can you determine if the 2009 RAV4 was manufactured after the mid season production change

Look at the plate on the driver's side door post. The upper right hand corner tells the month and year of manufacture. The plate also tells you where it was assembled. Our 2009 FWD model was made in Japan in 08/2008.

Does the V6 have a strong transmission?

you would think being your height compared to the vehicle you would appreciate not having a rear door to smack your head off.... more intelligent lift hinge i think not... and the spare tire may not look better but it is way easier to use when you need it and provides the room for the 3rd row seats to fold flat..

is this generation of rav4 prone to any particular engine issues?? Head gaskets or seals prone to blowing? I have a VW that has had issue after issue and i'm looking for a more reliable car that can drive 300,000 Km +

Toyota vehicles are made to last... and you can see it in the resale value on every model compared to any other brand of vehicle... ive had a corolla and a a v6 rav4 and both have done great by me.

Look it up on car complaints.com. There were a couple issues but none that are deal breakers for me.

the rear door "issue" is because in japan they drive on the left as originally prescribe by England.

google..consumer reports....will tell you about recalls. to look for and make sure it gets addressed all the recalls on the vehicle

You must be in a different country. There is no 2.2 engine in the US model.

I think that appearance package that did not have the spare on the back door came with those crappy rock hard run-flat tires. No spare inside under the deck cover.

Should design spare tyre underneath car especially for 2 WD models that are all front wheel drive.

What do you think about the 2013 and up Rav4 and what issues to look out for?

I believe the 2013 was first to get the 6-speed AT which has been described as bulletproof.

guys, the 2006-2008 looks the same 2009-2012 however a 2009 is five thousand more expensive than 2008 in brazil. from another years the difference is like 500 to 1000. somebody could explain that difference?

Can't go wrong with the V6.
