2008 Jaguar XF SV8 Review - The Bargain Super Saloon Time Forgot (My Next Daily? Pt. 4)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In today's video I am looking at an almost forgotten version of an often overlooked Jaguar - the XF SV8. Made for only one model year, the SV8 featured the 4.2L Supercharged V8 as seen in the old Jaguar S-Type R. Based on that car's platform, the XF now seems to be of an awkward age. But, is there something to this big cat?

Yes it’s real veneer.... I worked at the Jaguar sawmill as a machinist. My job was to machine the console veneer. The door veneer front to back was manufactured as one piece , cut in half to give front and rear door veneer and have a mirror matched veneer to the opposite side.

There are people who will swear blind that no car made in the last 40 years has 'real' wood. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the assertion that it's always fake has led to the near complete abolition of wood in cars today. I like a bit of timber and I chose my 2010 XK specifically because it had Ivory seats with walnut. Proper Jag spec.

..And it's much appreciated, Matt! I'd just made a comment about the mirror matched wood. And that razor edge where the little centre piece meets the centre console. You don't see craftsmanship like that very often. I'd heard a story that there was a father and son pair that refused to leave the wood shop for Gaydon, and that the wood stayed at Browns Lane because of that. Is it true?

Always liked the XF, personally prefer the pre-facelift especially in XFR guise. The headlight bulges give the bonnet a more muscular look than on the facelift cars. I agree about the damping being excellent, went out in my friends XFS 3.0d the other day and it is much nicer than my e92 335d and isn't too much worse on the handling front.

I loved my 3 years of SV8 ownership. While it was a big old barge the engine, emotion and rareness made them very cool 😎. You also get gold membership at Kwik-fit as I got through a set of rear P Zeros every 9k miles !
Fantastic review! I've got almost this exact car - just different wood (which is genuine, by the way - I chipped it when changing it out). Did you notice that they mirror match the wood on opposite doors and have continuous grains across the centre console panels? Proper craftsmanship. I can help out with your reliability worries. I bought mine in 2010 from a Jag dealer at £25k (still a huge reduction on the £60k new price) and I've taken it from 37k miles to its current 170k. It replaced my old S-Type V8, which isn't in the same league. The engine is bombproof. It's pretty much the same as the 5 litre, and not highly stressed. In the 11 years that I've had the car, the only real repair was to replace a catalyst. It's also had new exhaust centre (due to grounding at a camp site) and new oil coolers (due to a steel concrete reinforcing rod offcut going through one of the lower vents on a motorway). Oh, a supercharger belt tensioner did fail, but that was a fairly simple repair. The heated /cooled drivers seats fail because a duct in the seat back between the peltier and blower gets crushed. That might be because of me being a similar build to you, and the 5.1 second 0-60. The only other failure is the central locking, which has got a bit weak at 150k miles. Oh, and the leather on the dashboard top has separated form summer heat. Need to get that reattached. Mindblowingly reliable. That's 11 years of heavy driving. My S-Type had got through three gearboxes by 100k miles. I'm on the standard exhaust because the best bit of the SV8 is its sleeper credentials. It looks exactly like every other XF. Even the wheels made it to the diesel S a few years later (although not with the wider rears - they're 275 IIRC). A few Audis have learned valuable life lessons about judging books by their covers or reading the small print from mine. At the moment, I'm at a point where I could buy another, and I'm tempted by the R-S as well, but I honestly love mine so much that I don't really want another car. It's comfortable, reliable, gorgeous (especially around the c-pillar) and ridiculously fast. A keeper. It's lasted almost as long as my marriage did, and I'd miss it more if it went. Oh, and that bump across the back of the boot? Other XFs don't have that (not sure about the R). It's a strut brace they added to stiffen up the rear at Mike Cross's request. Get one of these and you join an exclusive club. I think there are only 350 on the roads in the UK.

nice write up! Here's to many more happy/stress free miles in the V8.
I've got the normally aspirirated V6 petrol. Slightly lacking in torque but overall a satisfying 248bhp. It's the premium luxury trim in cream and walnut. Feels like a Jag should to me. Reliability has been rock solid apart from some ancillary bits like the fuel filler pod. I drive it every day and I love it. By the way I've got round the blue tooth connectivity issue by buying a £20 blue tooth reciever and plugging it straight into the USB port. Simples.

The pre-aluminum XF was a much better car than was acknowledged by some. Every time I drive my friend’s supercharged V6 version from the end of the model life, I find the chassis, handling, and brakes to be better than I remembered. I almost bought a 2013 NA 5 liter in Caviar for my daily driver.
Had an SV8 for 4 years. Loved it - great Q car.

Was it expensive to maintain?
@johnpathway8581
2 жыл бұрын
@@autotrimmers6353 Mostly not - insurance and general running costs were ok (obviously big tyres and fuel etc were pricier than a smaller car) but I had one unforeseen big bill during my ownership related to a small leak in a pipe under the supercharger. The parts cost was only about £30 but Labour involved removing the supercharger to get to the offending item which was approx 6 hours work. I used a good Independent Jag specialist but it still stung the wallet! That said, at the second hand prices they were when I picked it up you have to offset this against the relative lack of depreciation but at the end of the day a £55k car (when new) will always come with higher bills than a ‘cheaper’ car
This sounds absolutely epic - Reminds me of the SLR McLaren. I think actually this appeals to me a lot more than the BMW M5 you just did. I know which I'd have on the drive.

@@fek5002 I have had my 2011 XF 3litre diesel for 7 years. In that time I have had a few niggly issues. Nothing at all serious. Had a car tuning clinic tune the car a couple of years ago from 240bhp to almost 300bhp. Now it is very quick indeed for quite a large car. I have recently bought an XE R Sport 25T AWD and it performs with acceleration times comparable to the XF. The suspension is stiffer but the XF drives and feels like it is a much smaller car than it actually is. A great car if you do a fair bit of non urban driving. We toured France a few years ago and covered 3500 miles and returned 45mpg. I would recommend the XF without hesitation.

@@fek5002 got the 2008 4.2 n/a since 2017. Mine is very reliable, only usual replacements and a 300€ repair bill because some sensor was broken. Fuel economy is fine, I have about 8,5-12 liters on average.
Looks are subjective, but I'd say the original XF was just about perfect as a piece of design to transform a manufacturer. Ian Callum has a great eye.
I had one of these in Canada from new in 2008 and it handled the slippery winter conditions very well when equipped with decent winter tyres. Lovely car.
Odd thing - I watched your search for a daily driver and thought I saw all the videos, but actually missed this one. Then this model came up (very rare in my locale) when I was searching for a new normal car and I looked for a review. Very helpful, thanks.
Forget the fearmongers get a.well serviced SV8 and enjoy it, of course you will need a fighting fund for preventative and routine servicing. If you don't drive it the battery will be your biggest issue, get a Ctek to keep it fullycharged. Low batteries throw weird engine management codes that are scary, but don't happen if battery is strong. 162k miles and climbing at 10k to 12k miles per year. Very high fuel consumption is vacuum pipes hardening and splitting letting in air. A preventative gearbox service has worked wonders on the low speed changes on the ZF6. Electronic Parking Brake was an expensive repair this year, but partly my fault by applying when moving stretched things. The ride on 20" rims is nothing short of remarkable. 300 mile non stop drives and getting out refreshed and ready for more, along with a quite frankly amazing B&W sound system are my highlights of ownership.
Always liked the alloys on the SV8
Thanks very much for all the content.. Please keep it flowing.!
Such a cool car. Love the styling, could live with the interior, and that engine... I couldn't live with the (lack of) fuel economy for a daily, but man if you can that's one hell of a nice car for the money.

Yep. I drive a diesel 3.0 but am considering switching to a petrol because I do a lot of short journeys, which isn't doing it any favours. Straightaway I'll have to take a hit on fuel economy and the absurd £600 road tax, so the SV8 is just going to be one step too far for me unfortunately and I'll have to stick with the 3 litre. Still, better that than nothing. I love my XF and wouldn't want to swap it for anything else. Incidentally there's a bit of a whinge about the rotating air vents in the video, but they can be turned off so that they remain in the open position. Not really sure why anybody would complain about them to be honest.
now that was spooky...watching an SV8 here with Jay this morning and then following one in the park while out on a ride this afternoon...
I had an XF SV8 until last year when I switched to an Evora. As you say, the Jag is very fast. Quicker than the figures suggest because it's hopeless at getting off the line at full chat. It was quite reliable. Issues I had over 4 years, steering pump failure, petrol cap jammed shut, that's about it. Parts and fixing is generally cheap as chips anyway. Fuel economy accurate to what you say in the video. Can reach low 30s on a clear long run. Realistic average is 17-20 mpg. Much more efficient going full pelt on a back road than pootling around town. Last but not least, glad you mentioned it at the end, if it's cold or wet or worse, both, be very careful. It will happily go to any angle you like in the dry with traction control off, in the wet and cold? With TC off it was 'exciting' to drive fairly slowly around town, with dynamic mode on you could EASILY find yourself very sideways whilst theoretically accelerating in a straight line. Yet... If there is one thing I miss in the Evora Vs the Jag it's the savagery of it trying to kill you. Which it would in the winter. Quite often. You had to stay awake. I would definitely have another.
Have always loved Jags. Being in my mid 40's, I would love a V8 version of the XF for weekends. It just makes sense.
The latter R is much better in terms of power and mpg, plus it has better seats, that's why the sv8 is overlooked. The 3.0dS gives 80% of the performance for half the running costs. I had one of those as a daily for 4 years and the only thing that broke was a door lock. Great cars.
Loved mine all in black! Few gremlins at first but overall very reliable! Good fun to drive hard and get the back wheels out!
I like the way you dispatched the Honda Jazz so quickly!
I've got the 2010 3.0D V6 mapped to 320bhp which gives me 45mpg around town and 50 on a run, plus it flies. The cream leather and wood veneer is like new and it drives perfectly. I can drive for 5 hours in total comfort. Toured Scotland last summer with 4 adults (3 over 6') and all our baggage and it was perfect. I've had plenty of cars but this is the best I've owned.
What a glorious noise! Jay find a standard Toyota chaser to test drive, entertainment is easily updated & the 1j gives smiles for miles.
Great car for the price I own a 2015 xfr absolutely love it. Fitted a spires rear exhaust to it made a huge difference.
My XFS Portfolio had the most comfy seats I’ve ever parked my bum upon (and I count Saab in that list too). Great car, properly munched the miles and had a good turn of pace when required. (Posted this comment before Jay copied me with the ‘turn of pace comment’ around the 3min mark)
I had a 2008 XKR with the 4.2 l Supercharged engine. I had the ECU remapped, the pulley changed and removed the middle silencers under the car. 492bhp was the result. Wheel spin in the wet was to be expected but I used to get 28-30mpg when you used cruise. Nice shout!

Considering my zafira does 28mpg with a third of the engine size it's not bad at all
Treated myself to a jaguar XE r-sport . Absolutely love it.
I've owned my XF 4.2 Sv8 for nearly 4 years now, got it with extremely low mileage at 28000 miles and it now has a tad over 50k miles on the clock. It's been fantastic, no major issues. Minor niggles were a couple of door solenoids needed replacing, new coolant expansion tank as the sensor floats are prone to sinking bringing on a low coolant warning. And that's it, apart from the usual consumables like brakes, tyres etc. It can go through batteries pretty quickly, if you do a lot of short runs like me. Not bad for a 12 year old car though, especially one with this kind of performance. I also purchased the Spires Stage 2 exhaust and the sound is fantastic, lovely growl on acceleration but no drone when cruising. The perfect balance really. Obviously fuel economy is not great, I average around 21 mpg overall, but have had it up to 30mpg on a long motorway run. Having owned plenty of BMWs and Audis in the past, my XF has been a way more reliable and a much better car in every way, its so good I'm finding it hard to know what I'd ever replace it with. It oozes class and isn't too shouty which also keeps it from being a thief magnet, which helps with insurance premiums etc. Overall I can't think of a better relatively low budget daily driver than one of these, they are fantastic. You won't regret buying one of these I can assure you of that

@@jdwynder Hi mate, they are pretty reliable cars really. No major issues to worry about, little things that can go wrong fairly often are the door lock mechanisms, sometimes these stick and need replacing, but it's not happened in my ownership. Coolant bottle level float can sink giving a low coolant warning but it's just a case of replacing the float. Biggest problem I've encountered is they are heavy on batteries, best to keep them on a trickle charge, especially if you don't plan on using it for a few days. But apart from those minor niggles there's no major horror stories really with these Jags, electrical gremlins are battery related 99% of the time. Engine and gearbox have been faultless not skipped a beat, I also would definitely recommend a Spires Exhaust system. Just brings out that lovely V8 rumble, but it's still quiet at motorway speeds etc, the perfect balance imo. I am changing jobs pretty soon and I may have to sell my beloved XF in the next few weeks. Having had the 4.2 supercharged and 5.0 supercharged in a L322 Range Rover I’m starting to wonder if the 4.2 is actually the sweeter engine. Smoother at idle, more supercharger wine and still plenty of performance of not the ultimate firepower of the 5.0, and most of all the 4.2 is bomb proof whilst the 5.0 has timing chain and coolant leak worries.

Lovely car! I agree with everyone else that the m5 from other day must be missing a few cylinders!
I don't get why Jag, Land Rover and some others use massive rear number plates. Especially when they make it massive to fit a space. Nobody wants half the rear end to be a big yellow reflector do they?
That’s the puppy. The jag V8 responds well to an exhaust and they feel special inside. And you can test the jag reliability questions if you have one as a daily

Jag review had to click instantly I've looking at the diesels and v6 and most of them have moon mileage quite a lot of examples past 150k so they must be decent cars

My SV8 is at 170k. Still as sweet as the day I got her. The trick is to find a really good specialist. The dealers are.....variable.

Nearly 200k on my diesel 'S' ;)
I went from the s type r - same engine, (lovely car just not as nice looking as an XF) to an XFS which is the 3l twin turbo diesel. As far as acceleration goes it seemed just as fast as the s type r. But nicer to drive, nicer inside and great on fuel on long runs. A great daily driver but lacked the noise and drama of the supercharged v8
The XF is a fantastic car. The later ones were let down by the ICE compared to the Audi/Merc/BMW. But they drive brilliantly. Shame no-one buys them new...
8:00 onwards omg. It sounds like driving a spitfire through the hedgerows and country lanes rather than over them 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Passing a Honda Jazz: regular occurance
I had a 2015 XF with the supercharged 3 liter V6. Probably the best car I've ever owned. Fast, comfortable, roomy.
I love my XF 3.0d. Excellent review as always James! Keep up the good work buddy

Get yourself a Jag James, search over. There's nothing like them! Look for the even rarer normally aspirated 5 litre V8 for an everyday driver. Superb.
This would be my pick of the cars so far.
This would get my vote as the new daily
Outro music is awesome 🤩
