2007 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L- Crank-No Start, ECM No Communication
NOTE: its not a fuse!!!! lol, working on a 2007 vw jetta with a 2.5l engine, customer complaint is that the veh will not start, the veh does crank, no engine light with the key on, cooling fans are on high, these are signs of an ecm that is not communicating, found that there is no communication with ecm using the scan tool and all the other modules have a networking fault ecm no comm stored, I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

Thanks brother did this to a Jetta today that has been parked for almost 3 years and seen by many mechanics and no one could figure it out damn thing just got back on road today thank a million times brother
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You saved me from totaling out my daughter's car. I'm so happy after watching your video. After going through the car top to bottom I followed your video step by step with limited amount of electrical testing tools. I tested 1,2,3,5,21,62. 62 - the red/black wire had only 3 volts running through it and as I moved the loom around it shut off completely. My wiring loom was untouched. I started cutting it back, the wires looked perfectly clean but about a foot away you could tell the wires had been getting wet and there was dirt mixed in. Then a saw an area of green corrosion that led me to the point that the wire was broken. I didn't actually see a break in the wire but it was definitely corroded inside the wire coating.

Not sure why, but that wire always corrodes.
Have been watching you for awhile and I know ever time Paul danner watches one of your videos he sheds a tear of the monster he has created THE FORCE IS STONG WITH YOU
why is it always more interesting seeing someone else diagnose vehices?? but thats what i do through out the week and its not as interesting haha
Very cool diagnosis and fix Tom. The can signals were indeed slightly different but very much like the ones you and Paul showed us recently with the "mis-located" fuse. Enjoyed watching you work. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks man. exact same problem on an 08 vw jetta 2.5L...sat for two years...we had replaced fuel pump...done tons of fuse and relay checking, never thought to check wiring harness. original wrap, same wire as in the video corroded to the point i pulled it apart from itself. Appreciate the great tutorial!
That was an awesome video, Nicely done. Wish all mechanics were as thorough as you.
Nice diagnosis, you saved the customer a lot of money.
I really enjoy your thought process throughout a problem thanks for taking the time to explain and for posting
Nicely done. Much reward in fixing that which many cannot. Simple process and NO, I would not have started with the canbus. You followed the simple logical process. Nice to see a younger pro doing things the right way.
You are very knowledgeable..... What makes me excited is how you use your tools absolutely awesome
Great job! Very satisfying to watch a pro go through such a problem with seemingly no starting point for us diyer's. Subscribed... Thanks!
I am always suspicious when I see electrical tape. It typically means someone has been hacking into wires, usually cutting them an inch from a connector just to make them hard to repair properly. Good job on the diagnoses!
wow, I am seriously so impressed with this video. You taught me so much just in 15 mins!!
I picked up an 07 Jetta yesterday for $200 with the same issues shown here. The dealer quoted the owner $2200 to replace the ECM. I tested it the way that you’ve shown here and had a short on the same wire. I fixed the short and the car started right up. Thank you for this video.
It's nice to see it not always so technical,,,keep up the good work👍👍👍
Very nice map to success. Thanks for taking us along.
Like this one. This guy was like a detective on these numbered wires. Most shops I've been to don't even take that time to read a diagram.
Hi again Tom you are a genious ! I had same simptoms no check engine light and fans had a mind of their own cause they would turn on for no reason so i did everything just like you have it here documented in your video and guess what it was same wire Red + black and i used my test list and traced it and there it was with same white rust inside wire cut it and jumped wire and boom turned on right away ..was very happy when i saw check engine light on cause then i knew i was in the right path !!Again tnx a million i wish you were near by to treat you to some Chinese food or some Ribs but i guess we far away from each other ...mike tnx bro you are a life saver !!!take care pal....Eladio
Dude u saved me many many hours of searching. Same exact problem. Fix the wire now it runs. Thanks a million buddy

Which wire was it? He talked about number 62 being red and black early in the video, but looks like he is fixing a black and yellow wire
Great video! Really liked watching you hunt this down. Thanks for posting
Great video. Had in the shop a 2007 Jetta also pin 62 only had 2.2 volts pulled the wires....black and red had corrosion in it. Repaired the wire cleared the modules and all is good. Thanks again.
Can I just mention how watching you work with that wiring reaching all the way back to the firewall made my lower back hurt.
Bro you are awesome i just fixed a 2008 jetta following your steps. Wire black and red had corrotion got my power and check engine light back thanks for this video
Distorted can signals will be my go to from now on with a no comm, great vid.

Tom another abdolutely brilliant video. Very clear concise, methodical. Superb job.steve from the uk
Awesome vid. I had a car dropped off today with the exact same symptoms. No comms with the ecu. Fans running, won't start. This video will be helpful with troubleshooting. I have All Data, but your video provided what pins I need to check. Much appreciated, and happy Thanksgiving.
What a wonderful story with a happy ending. 👏🏽Bravo
Tommy, Paul taught you well. and apparently you paid attention !
Even this video has 5 yrs, my jetta does the same thing! Thanks for the solution
Thank you for the amazing video! Followed this process and found the same corroded wire!
Good one TOMY, always fun to watch and listen to ur process . thanks for sharing cheeeeeeeeeers.
Nicely done!
excellent video!!! you help me a lot to fix my car!! congrats!!
You are genius, and it's helped me to solve my problem. Thank you

You may not even of had a short in the wiring but that is what it is supposed to do, lead you to thinking that will find it.
thanks Tommy, great learning video cheers sandy
Very interesting!...Good job on locating ACTUAL problem....

Thank you. This actually is a common problem on the mk5s
Excelent job bro ! I have same problem now i know what i have to do ...tnx a million Tom.......
I suggest doing a capacitive discharge of the car battery before changing out parts. Disconnect both battery terminals, starting with the ground - (negative), connect both connection leads with a jumper wire for at 1 minute. Reconnect both battery terminals, hopefully that helps. That worked with my car!
Nice fault finding man.. I’m about to start on a 2009 Tiguan.. no start, no comms..!
Great work once again thanks for sharing 👍
Just got one towed in as soon as I turned the key and got the scanner ready and those fans kicked on I knew I had a problem with the pcm so the carpet was wet I just moved the rubber seal under the hood as sure enough it was full of dirt water and the fibers from the fire wall so a mouse house and broken wires repaired that and everything worked 👍
Pretty crafty. Outstanding diagnostic. VW are notorious for thses broken/ rotten wires and water infiltration, damage.
Great video. Thanks for your 21:41 minutes of interesting VW realities. Got to love the internet and Mr. Tom!!29Aug18
That was perfect and very instructive 👏👏👍
1000th like lol, thanks man I owe you one I'm 99% sure this is exactly what's going on with the car I just got

I also think this is what's going on with my vehicle as well
Good job. VW wiring diagrams is fun to track :D
Dude that was awsome great trouble shooting skills
I have an 08 Wolfsburg that shut off during a snow storm. A few other mechanics did a few tune up things and now it has a misfire from hell and about 30 codes (all low voltage or implausible values) found an aftermarket alarm/ amplifier cluster F that had shorted and took out the ecm fuse also killed the lift pump and burned up the hpfp, a air temp sensor wires were dead shorted, and the 12v feed to a module under the steering wheel was shorted. After removal and repairs it still has a ton of codes and misfires. I think I have a hidden short or the ECM is cooked. Idk but I've tested every relay fuse and connector to do with the motor and they are good.
You are the future Scanner Danner !!
awesome video man .. you know your stuff .. very impressive
Great video, I'm having the same problem with my 2004 Audi A4 now I know what else to check...
Well done Tommy!
Thanks Tonm for share ☺
U are a professional my 2008 Audi A3 2.0 T is also doing the same I hve also removing my wires frm ecm plugs but jst dd it halfway
Wow bro u truly the VW expert
that was awesome and satisfying... good job..
As someone who knows zero about cars I learned a great deal about my Volkswagen. I’m hoping it doesn’t cost too much to replace this thing.

i clicked on your video thinking its scannerdanner just because of that yellow dmm :D
This is the same issue I’m having on my mk4 Jetta 2.0L I went to change the plugs, realized I didn’t wanna tank the leafs from the wire so without the tool I never even tried. Hooked all my vacuum lines back up correctly and it just turned over and over and eventually killed the starter. Still don’t know if it’ll start once the starter is replaced.
thanks thanks thanks you are a life saver , same exact problem and same exact wire .
an excellent diagnostic master. it was a headache but you did it that's important. I have a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg 3.2L no power supply to fuel pump. What do you advise me to fix this vehicle. Thanks
Well done man!
Nice video Tommy. I am curious to know if this CAN signal distortion is a VW only issue when a power supply is lost or whether or not it is the same for other manufacturers. In your other video with Danner you went back and questioned the resistance of the TCM CAN lines and was curious. This led you to look further. I am not sure that an issue inside the module would pull the reading up or down since the TCM did not have one of the 120 resistors inside itthat returns the 60K value. I think your logic to question replacing the TCM was good but am still not sure that even if the TCM was at fault that you would have seen a different value as the testing is all done powered down and all these lines carry are messages. Still a great catch none the less. Maybe we will have to wait until a faulty module is found and check the CAN resistance then to know for sure what goes on. Thanks for the video
Great video very good job 👏
Good video, Im having same issue on a 2002 1.8T. I jumped started signal wire but im not sure because its getting 1.4 volts on the starter and i have to check grounds or fuses. New starter but still cant figure it out. I need to get a diagram for the Jetta
Have found evidence of the wiper motor arms coming in contact with that wire bundle connection the ECM on a 2005. Also found evidence of moisture inside the ECM. On this car I found the drain holes were stopped up by leaves in the area under the ECM that caused snow and water to cover the ECM wires. Could be the reason VW changed the ECM location on the MK6 cars.
Awesome job. Is the connector that was right next to the damaged wire the factory "(D78) plus connection 1" or splice in the wiring harness that was seen in the wiring diagram? I am trying to sort out an identical problem. I have no power at the T121/62 0.5 ro/sw wire.
Yes, the dreaded "somebody was here" Least it lets you know you're close to finding it:) Then there are all the mechanics that can't find these problems.
Shifter broke while back trying to fix triptonic and i had a zip tie at just right spot but interlock not stopping movement but sat for a year with battery connected so corrosion probably the issue on a wire somewhere.
great video! I have a problem with an '07 jetta 2.5. has me pretty stumped. throwing codes for AAT (IAT) sensor high voltage, and ECT high voltage. Ref voltage is good, sensors both read fine. Seems to only set the codes on start up. Car runs great and I can clear codes while running and they never come back, can shut off after clear and key back on and no codes. Only set when car starts up. Any ideas where to go next?
You may happen to have the same diagram but for a 2011 vw Jetta ? I saw the two grounds and 3,5 pin but not the rest of the pin, they were not used on my model, i saw the same color wires but in different pin positions. Thank you
Nice job mate
Wow i have the same issue and now i can reference your video to the mechanic
Awesome thanks for sharing.
good vido tomorrow i will check again for pin 3+ 1and2 - 21+ and 62+ thanks
Man u would be a good friend to have
Very impressive. where would the ground wire be located for the ECM. Would it also be located under the battery tray?
Nice job!
you are the man thank you
Good stuff, where did you tap into for CAN signals? What pins?
nice job tommy
Hi! I have the identical problem but when I probe the last positive wire like you did I get the exact symptoms! But when I took the tape off the wires seem ok. I am curious- could the ecu be faulty if the wires are good? I'm thinking it's that wire- there was a mouse nest on it. But no damage to the wires. Ecu fail?
very nice job
Good job finding that wire, most wudda changed the ECM

That's exactly what most shops would tell you they'd have to do
Was gonna try to put a test light on the brake switch to check ignition switch power but i might have to check ecm or tcm power
I have 8 volts on the black and purple. Think this could stop mine from starting when it's raining and cold?
Where do I find a diagram for a 2006 vw passat 2.0t ecm.I checked all data but they are not very specific with power and ground or fuses related to ecm anyhelp I will apreciate thanks
Great job.
Great job
After many days of fighting the same thing on a 2010 VW Jetta 2.5, and replaced cam sensor , crank position sensor, battery, clock spring, and many other problems , car would continue to shut off while driving. Pulled ECM OUT , while connected and shook wire harness , car shut off, and it was wire 62 corroded in the bundle. Why is this not a recall? Thank you soo much for this video.
I’m working on a jetta 2008 2.5 having same issue, tore off MAS and gave it a try and she started right up? could it be the MAS?
Great diagnosis simple straight to the point.
I can't get my obd2 scanner or my 3rd party vcds cable to connect to my 2006 jetta tdi brm manual. I've checked all fuses and relays and the wiring.. I've pretty much concluded my ecu might be fried... But im getting a no crank no start problem. Think this could be a fried ecu then?
Having a code power supply relay for ecu j271 or j363 can I get any suggestions on where I should be looking in my car it's a 2005 vw jetta 2.5
This exact thing happened to me. However my gear selector PRNDL started flashing also. Plus the Steering wheel came upon dash.
Hey guys! So I am getting nearly the same problem as in this video; except my check engine light is on, and I get three distinct beeps when the ignition is switched on, indicating low oil or oil pressure but oil levels are fine; the car cranks but no start and no spark(battery, plugs and coil all fine) I am getting ECM code 01314 on my transmission, brake electronics, Airco and instrument cluster, any thoughts?! Thanks!
Im having the same problem with golf mk4 v6 4motion are the pin diagram the same
I have a no crank no start 2007 rabbit. I have a check engine light when key is on, but I have code 0685. Everything worked fine until I washed the windshield. I see a lot of leaves and wetness around the ecm harness, not sure what to check next.
good video
