I think everyone who’s engine failed because of a cylinder deactivation system destroyed it, should join together and class action suit the automakers, with a requirement for a full recall and deletion of this wholly unnecessary system that only causes premature, catastrophic failure of the engine.

I am an old mechanic 80 years, I have never seen a workshop with such great machinery to do a JOB RIGHT. I am in Australia 🇦🇺 and in my time it was solid lifters, all we had to do keep valve clearances adjusted and hardly had any issues. I remember when hydraulic lifters came on a Ford Falcon and knocking noises came to be. A great job. 👍👍👍. A pleasure to watch. From Australia 🇦🇺.

I would have combined them both as what you have done so brilently but the costs of real estate here in N.J. is ridiculous + the EPA fees ,& taxes. You have a terrific team of guys that you can trust + the way you run your business is admirable. All together I've been working on cars for 63 years & still do from time to time but I'm tired. Make sure to use the Isky bushing type lifters and a Melling HV or Hellcat oil pump! This also happens on the non-MDS engines due to piss poor oil volume! I’m on my 4th set. Last time lost the cam and spun a cam bearing. Took the opportunity to go to a 426 with the Isky lifters and a Melling HV pump! Now has 47psi at idle at operating temp compared to the stock mopars 23 psi!

I did IT for a chrysler dealership and I was in the shop talking with the A-techs all of the time because they're ALWAYS tearing apart HEMIs. Despite popular belief of Displacement-on-Demand destroying HEMI lifters & cams due to it being a culprit for GM V8s, MDS isn't the issue here. MDS lifters aren't even the lifters that typically fail on the HEMI. The problem comes from a major design flaw from Chrysler where oil flowing from the cylinder heads back down through the block does NOT lubricate the camshaft at low-RPM. GM's AFM/DFM system takes 80,000-100,000 miles to do this kind of damage, yet you're showing us brand new lifters & a cam that failed and blaming it on cylinder deactivation. This kind of damage is probably from the owner constantly leaving his car idling for a long time whenever he parks it. No amount of good maintenance nor a DoD delete will stop a HEMI from blowing itself up if that's how the owner likes to treat his car.

@@petefroehling8704they aren't failing. And these hemi engines are sometimes going all the way to half a million miles. They have a better track record than any other V8 for the most part. They are also the most efficient V8 in all of history. People don't change the oil enough. They go too long. Low quality oil should realistically not stay in the engine past 2000 miles.. it's not rocket science. Oil changes should be done more often than the oil companies are not making a very good product to be honest. These engines are phenomenal.

Lack of oil changes is a big cause of AFM lifter failures. I work with a lot of guys that own 2014+ GM half tons with AFM. None of them have disabled it yet a few of them have over 200k miles. The biggest thing that they have in common is that they're old and they change their oil a lot. Like every 3000 or 4000 miles. They don't care what the 0w20 label claims, they change their oil very often. Makes sense. Especially with direction injection and the diesel-like soot it generates. Abrasive soot flow right through the oil filter. They also are not the type that remote starts their truck over and over every morning just to drive a few miles to work.

Boring & Cutting the deck in the Same machine & Spins the block for you too ! Absolutely nuts !!! We were all Manual back in the 70's. Had to jig it up , check everything. Then move it to the Mill if u wanted to Deck the block & Re Jig every thing up again. secure it down. check everything. i Guess it has been 49 years since ive been in that shop. Wow , Time Flys !!!

I hate multiple displacement engines but that is NOT the problem. This Hemi engine was designed defective from the factory .Oil reciprocating from the cylinder heads back down through the block does NOT lubricate the camshaft at low-RPM because the channels are not over the cams. Fix it as many times as you want but it will DO IT AGAIN !!!

Only way to keep them together is high quality synthetic oil, adding additional ZDDP to the oil, 5k oil change intervals and little idle time. Crank her up, give it 30 seconds, and drive gentle toll operating temp and enjoy. If you’re going to idle more than 3 minutes shut it down. You’ll get 300k plus easy

They fixed the lack of oil pressure at idle on the Hellcats with a much larger volume oil pump. Keeps the pressure up at idle so the can and lifters get oil. Melting now has a high volume pump to fix this on the non-Hellcats.

Not deactivation causes lifter failure. Happens on non deactivation lifters. Needle bearings in lifter roller too small and weak. 2018 onwards Hemi v8 fitted with heavy duty lifters with fatter bigger roller needle bearings. Same lifters used in Hellcat.

Correct but also wrong. Non MDS HEMIS have always had the same lifters used in the hellcat. From 2015 onward. There is no such thing as “hellcat lifters” non mds lifters in the 2500 trucks and 6 speed manual cars are the exact part number as the hellcats.

Even though am 41yrs old, am not giving up anytime soon. I came across this your channel like 3months ago and i enjoyed watching it. Looking at the kind of investment you made on the kind of set-up in your, i kept asking myself. Will i ever to set my shop up even with a quarter of your shop. I have done a dozen of the 5.7 and 6.4 or more for lifter failure. Its mostly on cylinder 3, and i found that odd. Its NEVER been an MDS lifter on any i have done. So thats not the problem. The MDS cylinders are 1,4,6,7. Now the Chevrolet is ALWAYS an AFM lifter. The pinlocks fail and the lifter stays collapsed, then the pushrod pops out and the lifter gets hammered until it spins and eats the camshaft. I have done over a dozen of these engines as well. The deactivated cylinders is also 1,4,6,7. Thats the 2 inside cylinders on one side and the 2 outside on the other side for balance.

I remember when my srt grand Cherokee ate a lifter, the dealer did a cam and lifter instal and I specifically said I want a NEW motor, long story short, the gave it back to me and in 500 mile it had a lifter noise, well I proceeded to drive it so hard that the damage was beyond repair and I got a new motor out of it and the dealer paid for it. I have to say, they could have saved themselves 9k because my new 6.4 motor is 10k they spent 8+ on a top end rebuild.

It's known that the 3rd gen hemi engines have oil starvation when ppl idle their engines for long periods of time. Fleet vehicles are more known to happen the fix is replace the oil pump with a hellcat oil pump for more volume. Mds is not the problem they are just more susceptible to fail first. Lots of vids on this.

If you switch to a high volume oil pump you have to also install a larger oil pan, otherwise you'll empty it at higher RPM's. Many, many "car guys" have found this out the hard way.

@@COBRO98 This is an OLD known issue on Hemi's from the 392's in the 50's. Especially the 60's Hemi's run the pan dry and KA-BOOM goes the engine. These newer engine are NO Different, NONE! Fact Many other engines went to the grave for this specific reason Stock pan, prolongs High RPM's starvation issues exploded engines, Lotsa Chevies, Pontiacs, Olds, Buicks. My 428 SCJ would FILL the rocker lids in maybe 5 second and the oil press gauge "flickering right at the end of a run. NO engine can drain back fast enough!!! NO ONE ! To alleviate this dilemma is Only resolved by 3 qt capacity addition on oil pan, Plus oil feed restricters on RA shaft feed or and oil restrictive pushrods. .I seen this way back in the 70's and heard this exclusively in the shop I was in. Guys buy the car craft" magazine "hop up kits" and two weeks later with 50 more HP out at the cruises racing, one explosion after another coast to coast. The Gen 3 engines Dodge, are WELL Known for the very stupid design of Oil splash is WOEFULL insufficient, the cams lobes need oil, and consequently, ALL the cam grinding shops portray this engineer design FLAW. Go look at the 110 blocks POOR design degree angle, actually prevents cam lobes from getting proper oiling, LOL, It's pure unbelievable stupidity of a design. I've had to address this Oiling FLAW design Issue countless times yet the donkeys thing Dodge are OK", Absolutely are NOT! The GEN-3 are the WORST engine for this problem. I'm surprised this guy didn't speak to this Well known FLAW issue. I'll NEVER own one even if it was given to me wouldn't do anything but SELL IT Immediately.

2008 and down Hemi was good for dropping the valve seats and blowing holes in pistons. 2009+ are good for locking up the roller lifters and wiping the cams.

My 11 Grand Cherokee has the hemi, I do my oil changes early, every 3-4,000miles to avoid this. So far so good, so have a stud missing on my manifold lol.

Was going to mention, once I did a 300c 5.7 hemi engine job and the new reman engine was shipped with special intake gaskets that were implented with screens to prevent shrapnel from going back into the engine because they drop valves or have lifter failure. Its important to really keep intake manifolds clean or atleast check it out before you throw it back together! I shook mine about and heard pieces and went and got a new factory unit as a replacement, screw doing the job over again because you reused a vital piece!

Yes, it definitely is. At idle these engines, for 2 decades, can’t produce enough oil pressure to lubricate the top end.

Cylinder delete was a bad idea from caddilac's first try in the 70s and 80s. Chrysler has enough problems with cams and lifters........ without variable displacement gear!!

In hemi engines, the only time the MDS lifters get oil is when MDS is activated. All other times, they are starved for oil, which is what casues them to fail.

You are completely right about those multi displacement engines MDS they’re called on the hemi’s . The thing is is if your engine eats a lifter, you have to tear the engine apart to clean it. You can’t just leave all the debris in there like that it’s gonna eat another lifter. I think the other thing is also is there’s low oil pressure when the engine is running at idle it’s not sufficient enough to get all that oil up to the head when the multi displacement MDS drops you down to four cylinders those lifters are still smacking. A few guys have gone and put the hellephant engine oil pump in the 5.7 and change out that mds lifter and system . But not all engines are doing this just the ones that sit ant low rpm lots it starve of oil because of the oil pumps that’s what I think

The weird thing is that the 5.7 hemis from 2005 thru 2010 had MDS and lifter failure was not an issue. When they added variable cam timing in 2011 the lifter issue rose its ugly head. They also had about 50 more hp so that proabably meant higher lift cams that may have started the lifter failure due to stronger valve springs. The early hemis did have a potential problem with valve seats dropping which was fixed in the later models. I bought a new 2005 Dodge Magnum with the 5.7 hemi and I loved that car. It was roomy comfortable and fun to drive due to the hp/torque of that engine. I sold it last year 2023 with 120k miles on it.

The roller bearings in the early lifters are tiny. The 2009+ are much bigger with a thinner piece of metal that rides on the cam. Did this cause the issue in the 2009+? I have used used lifters from early engines in cam swaps😆

Dave, I own a 02 Ram and about to trip 200K on it. I always use 15-50 synthetic oil. The only problems I have experienced is the water pump, starter and alternator. I have not been nice to it and it still runs great. I appreciate your videos. Congrats on your Discovery deal. Looking forward to watching.

Wow this thing took out the whole motor, that’s crazy I know once a rocker arm blows those little needler bearings are bad. Usually I see just a lifter gets stuck and eats a cam journal. You machining everything and making sure it’s right from the start, wow speaks volumes great video

Hey Dave, I've got the same motor in the same type of car. I just wanted to give my two cents on the big reason these hemis fail. The 5.7L specifically was built for lower hp when it first came out and oiled well for that application, but it was upgraded all except the oil pump into the chargers, challengers, 300s, durangos, and newer rams. The cylinder deactivation isn't the big killer of these engines, but rather the piss poor stock oil pump that gets around 9 to 14 psi of oil pressure at idle with warm oil. Idling at operating temps can damage these engines, thus, personally, I would offer a recommendation for a Mellings Oil pump, which has had extensive research on it to increase oil pressure by some amazing creators on this site. Just my two cents, great video and I love learning more about all types of engines, especially the one I have

As a wee lad back in the day, when I first started buying tools and twirling spanners on my first car. My father said to me 'cry once'. Don't half do a half-arsed repair, because you'll only cry again when the repair fails and you have to do it again, properly. This is a prime example. I'm 60 now, he's 85, and all he does now is accuse me of being too pedantic 😅. The Hemi sounds awesome. I owned Chryslers for 20 yrs until Chrysler Australia folded. Dodge and Jeep are back here now, I wish the Chargers and the Challengers were. Great vid. You guys make it look all too easy. 👍🇦🇺

This is a serious hardcore shop. They do everything. Diagnosis and very professional, knowledgeable repair. Machine work , and assembly. These shops are disappearing. I love the videos. 😊
I've been a Mechanical Engineer for 26 years. I absolutely love seeing the machining operations on these blocks. As one who knows how much precision is required, it is very impressive when it is done right.
I think everyone who’s engine failed because of a cylinder deactivation system destroyed it, should join together and class action suit the automakers, with a requirement for a full recall and deletion of this wholly unnecessary system that only causes premature, catastrophic failure of the engine.

I am an old mechanic 80 years, I have never seen a workshop with such great machinery to do a JOB RIGHT. I am in Australia 🇦🇺 and in my time it was solid lifters, all we had to do keep valve clearances adjusted and hardly had any issues. I remember when hydraulic lifters came on a Ford Falcon and knocking noises came to be. A great job. 👍👍👍. A pleasure to watch. From Australia 🇦🇺.

Make sure to use the Isky bushing type lifters and a Melling HV or Hellcat oil pump! This also happens on the non-MDS engines due to piss poor oil volume! I’m on my 4th set. Last time lost the cam and spun a cam bearing. Took the opportunity to go to a 426 with the Isky lifters and a Melling HV pump! Now has 47psi at idle at operating temp compared to the stock mopars 23 psi!
That shop is amazing! The body lifts off the chassis and stores at the ceiling and there is still plenty of head space to work underneath it! Brilliant
I did IT for a chrysler dealership and I was in the shop talking with the A-techs all of the time because they're ALWAYS tearing apart HEMIs. Despite popular belief of Displacement-on-Demand destroying HEMI lifters & cams due to it being a culprit for GM V8s, MDS isn't the issue here. MDS lifters aren't even the lifters that typically fail on the HEMI. The problem comes from a major design flaw from Chrysler where oil flowing from the cylinder heads back down through the block does NOT lubricate the camshaft at low-RPM. GM's AFM/DFM system takes 80,000-100,000 miles to do this kind of damage, yet you're showing us brand new lifters & a cam that failed and blaming it on cylinder deactivation. This kind of damage is probably from the owner constantly leaving his car idling for a long time whenever he parks it. No amount of good maintenance nor a DoD delete will stop a HEMI from blowing itself up if that's how the owner likes to treat his car.

@@petefroehling8704they aren't failing. And these hemi engines are sometimes going all the way to half a million miles. They have a better track record than any other V8 for the most part. They are also the most efficient V8 in all of history. People don't change the oil enough. They go too long. Low quality oil should realistically not stay in the engine past 2000 miles.. it's not rocket science. Oil changes should be done more often than the oil companies are not making a very good product to be honest. These engines are phenomenal.

Lack of oil changes is a big cause of AFM lifter failures. I work with a lot of guys that own 2014+ GM half tons with AFM. None of them have disabled it yet a few of them have over 200k miles. The biggest thing that they have in common is that they're old and they change their oil a lot. Like every 3000 or 4000 miles. They don't care what the 0w20 label claims, they change their oil very often. Makes sense. Especially with direction injection and the diesel-like soot it generates. Abrasive soot flow right through the oil filter. They also are not the type that remote starts their truck over and over every morning just to drive a few miles to work.

Wow , From Junk to Running in one Video ! Very cool. Wow , The Machines You have there are a Whole lot different than the machine shop i Worked in n the 70's. That Block Boring Machine is insane !!! Boring & Cutting the deck in the Same machine & Spins the block for you too ! Absolutely nuts !!! We were all Manual back in the 70's. Had to jig it up , check everything. Then move it to the Mill if u wanted to Deck the block & Re Jig every thing up again. secure it down. check everything. i Guess it has been 49 years since ive been in that shop. Wow , Time Flys !!!
I hate multiple displacement engines but that is NOT the problem. This Hemi engine was designed defective from the factory .Oil reciprocating from the cylinder heads back down through the block does NOT lubricate the camshaft at low-RPM because the channels are not over the cams. Fix it as many times as you want but it will DO IT AGAIN !!!

Only way to keep them together is high quality synthetic oil, adding additional ZDDP to the oil, 5k oil change intervals and little idle time. Crank her up, give it 30 seconds, and drive gentle toll operating temp and enjoy. If you’re going to idle more than 3 minutes shut it down. You’ll get 300k plus easy

They fixed the lack of oil pressure at idle on the Hellcats with a much larger volume oil pump. Keeps the pressure up at idle so the can and lifters get oil. Melting now has a high volume pump to fix this on the non-Hellcats.

Not deactivation causes lifter failure. Happens on non deactivation lifters. Needle bearings in lifter roller too small and weak. 2018 onwards Hemi v8 fitted with heavy duty lifters with fatter bigger roller needle bearings. Same lifters used in Hellcat.

Correct but also wrong. Non MDS HEMIS have always had the same lifters used in the hellcat. From 2015 onward. There is no such thing as “hellcat lifters” non mds lifters in the 2500 trucks and 6 speed manual cars are the exact part number as the hellcats.
I am a poor guy from Ghana west Africa to be precise. One of my biggest dream is to be the best in engine rebuilding. I have a small shop with little or no set up at all. Even though am 41yrs old, am not giving up anytime soon. I came across this your channel like 3months ago and i enjoyed watching it. I have done a dozen of the 5.7 and 6.4 or more for lifter failure. Its mostly on cylinder 3, and i found that odd. Its NEVER been an MDS lifter on any i have done. So thats not the problem. The MDS cylinders are 1,4,6,7. Now the Chevrolet is ALWAYS an AFM lifter. The pinlocks fail and the lifter stays collapsed, then the pushrod pops out and the lifter gets hammered until it spins and eats the camshaft. I have done over a dozen of these engines as well. The deactivated cylinders is also 1,4,6,7. Thats the 2 inside cylinders on one side and the 2 outside on the other side for balance.

Looks like someone did a crap repair on that one. The higher the mileage and the more worn it looks the less likely I will do the repair and sell an engine, or just refuse.

Given the quality of work you guys do, it blows my mind how you guys never have gloves on.
I remember when my srt grand Cherokee ate a lifter, the dealer did a cam and lifter instal and I specifically said I want a NEW motor, long story short, the gave it back to me and in 500 mile it had a lifter noise, well I proceeded to drive it so hard that the damage was beyond repair and I got a new motor out of it and the dealer paid for it. I have to say, they could have saved themselves 9k because my new 6.4 motor is 10k they spent 8+ on a top end rebuild.
It's known that the 3rd gen hemi engines have oil starvation when ppl idle their engines for long periods of time. Fleet vehicles are more known to happen the fix is replace the oil pump with a hellcat oil pump for more volume. Mds is not the problem they are just more susceptible to fail first. Lots of vids on this.

If you switch to a high volume oil pump you have to also install a larger oil pan, otherwise you'll empty it at higher RPM's. Many, many "car guys" have found this out the hard way.

@@COBRO98 This is an OLD known issue on Hemi's from the 392's in the 50's. Especially the 60's Hemi's run the pan dry and KA-BOOM goes the engine. These newer engine are NO Different, NONE! Fact Many other engines went to the grave for this specific reason Stock pan, prolongs High RPM's starvation issues exploded engines, Lotsa Chevies, Pontiacs, Olds, Buicks. My 428 SCJ would FILL the rocker lids in maybe 5 second and the oil press gauge "flickering right at the end of a run. NO engine can drain back fast enough!!! NO ONE ! To alleviate this dilemma is Only resolved by 3 qt capacity addition on oil pan, Plus oil feed restricters on RA shaft feed or and oil restrictive pushrods. .I seen this way back in the 70's and heard this exclusively in the shop I was in. Guys buy the car craft" magazine "hop up kits" and two weeks later with 50 more HP out at the cruises racing, one explosion after another coast to coast. The Gen 3 engines Dodge, are WELL Known for the very stupid design of Oil splash is WOEFULL insufficient, the cams lobes need oil, and consequently, ALL the cam grinding shops portray this engineer design FLAW. Go look at the 110 blocks POOR design degree angle, actually prevents cam lobes from getting proper oiling, LOL, It's pure unbelievable stupidity of a design. I've had to address this Oiling FLAW design Issue countless times yet the donkeys thing Dodge are OK", Absolutely are NOT! The GEN-3 are the WORST engine for this problem. I'm surprised this guy didn't speak to this Well known FLAW issue. I'll NEVER own one even if it was given to me wouldn't do anything but SELL IT Immediately.

2008 and down Hemi was good for dropping the valve seats and blowing holes in pistons. 2009+ are good for locking up the roller lifters and wiping the cams.

My 11 Grand Cherokee has the hemi, I do my oil changes early, every 3-4,000miles to avoid this. So far so good, so have a stud missing on my manifold lol.

Honest mechanic can’t do much better great job. Regardless of cost you have to charge what you are worth, you do a good job you get rewarded
Was going to mention, once I did a 300c 5.7 hemi engine job and the new reman engine was shipped with special intake gaskets that were implented with screens to prevent shrapnel from going back into the engine because they drop valves or have lifter failure. Its important to really keep intake manifolds clean or atleast check it out before you throw it back together! I shook mine about and heard pieces and went and got a new factory unit as a replacement, screw doing the job over again because you reused a vital piece!
This is a great American honest auto mechanic shop! Wish all shop owners took pride in their work
Idle time is a big killer on these I know in the fleets that idle all day this is a huge problem

Yes, it definitely is. At idle these engines, for 2 decades, can’t produce enough oil pressure to lubricate the top end.

Cylinder delete was a bad idea from caddilac's first try in the 70s and 80s. Chrysler has enough problems with cams and lifters........ without variable displacement gear!!
In hemi engines, the only time the MDS lifters get oil is when MDS is activated. All other times, they are starved for oil, which is what casues them to fail.

You are completely right about those multi displacement engines MDS they’re called on the hemi’s . The thing is is if your engine eats a lifter, you have to tear the engine apart to clean it. You can’t just leave all the debris in there like that it’s gonna eat another lifter. I think the other thing is also is there’s low oil pressure when the engine is running at idle it’s not sufficient enough to get all that oil up to the head when the multi displacement MDS drops you down to four cylinders those lifters are still smacking. A few guys have gone and put the hellephant engine oil pump in the 5.7 and change out that mds lifter and system . But not all engines are doing this just the ones that sit ant low rpm lots it starve of oil because of the oil pumps that’s what I think
The weird thing is that the 5.7 hemis from 2005 thru 2010 had MDS and lifter failure was not an issue. When they added variable cam timing in 2011 the lifter issue rose its ugly head. They also had about 50 more hp so that proabably meant higher lift cams that may have started the lifter failure due to stronger valve springs. The early hemis did have a potential problem with valve seats dropping which was fixed in the later models. I bought a new 2005 Dodge Magnum with the 5.7 hemi and I loved that car. It was roomy comfortable and fun to drive due to the hp/torque of that engine. I sold it last year 2023 with 120k miles on it.

The roller bearings in the early lifters are tiny. The 2009+ are much bigger with a thinner piece of metal that rides on the cam. Did this cause the issue in the 2009+? I have used used lifters from early engines in cam swaps😆

Blame the EPA, dodge, our government in general for saving us all by causing the premature failure of many products which gets paid them thrown in a landfill and forcing the manufacture of another, usually three times per life cycle.....

Dave, I own a 02 Ram and about to trip 200K on it. I always use 15-50 synthetic oil. The only problems I have experienced is the water pump, starter and alternator. I have not been nice to it and it still runs great. I appreciate your videos. Congrats on your Discovery deal. Looking forward to watching.

Wow this thing took out the whole motor, that’s crazy I know once a rocker arm blows those little needler bearings are bad. Usually I see just a lifter gets stuck and eats a cam journal. You machining everything and making sure it’s right from the start, wow speaks volumes great video
Hey Dave, I've got the same motor in the same type of car. I just wanted to give my two cents on the big reason these hemis fail. The 5.7L specifically was built for lower hp when it first came out and oiled well for that application, but it was upgraded all except the oil pump into the chargers, challengers, 300s, durangos, and newer rams. The cylinder deactivation isn't the big killer of these engines, but rather the piss poor stock oil pump that gets around 9 to 14 psi of oil pressure at idle with warm oil. Idling at operating temps can damage these engines, thus, personally, I would offer a recommendation for a Mellings Oil pump, which has had extensive research on it to increase oil pressure by some amazing creators on this site. Just my two cents, great video and I love learning more about all types of engines, especially the one I have

As a wee lad back in the day, when I first started buying tools and twirling spanners on my first car. My father said to me 'cry once'. Don't half do a half-arsed repair, because you'll only cry again when the repair fails and you have to do it again, properly. This is a prime example. I'm 60 now, he's 85, and all he does now is accuse me of being too pedantic 😅. The Hemi sounds awesome. I owned Chryslers for 20 yrs until Chrysler Australia folded. Dodge and Jeep are back here now, I wish the Chargers and the Challengers were. Great vid. You guys make it look all too easy. 👍🇦🇺
