In this video I talk through the fault and the process involved in diagnosing it, which lead to the engine and transmission having to be removed.

Do you have any info on what valve cover gasket you have to use on this? My dealer is quoting me $900 for a new cover and gasket, when all I need is a gasket. I've been told there is a slight revision on the cover+gasket, hence they need to change the cover as well. I'm inclined to call bullshit, since some people say the new gasket fits the old cover just fine. Any thoughts?

Great video! I also have a S6 v10 on a 2006. I'm hoping you could point me in the direction of somebody who could rectify a oil leak. I'm based in the Midlands. Thanks

What was the final damage and why do you think it may have happened?

Tsuter1978 final damage was cam chain advance/retarder unit, upper chain, exhaust camshaft and two exhaust valves. Cylinder head had to be removed, new head gasket and other consumables. The vehicle was sold on and to my knowledge is still running fine!

Tempest Road Sport good to know. I have an S8 with an exhaust rocket that has become dislodged on cylinder 1. Monday starts the further year down to asses the extent of the damage. I’m hopeful they can repair with the engine in, but time will tell. Do you know why the parts failed in this engine?

@@Tsuter1978 I missed something off the list of parts - two roller rocker fingers were also replaced. Previous owner admitted he liked to drive the vehicle hard, my assumption was that at high RPM the roller rocker that was spat out - which was for the inlet valve on on cylinder 6 if I remeber correctly - experienced a metal fatigue failure at the hydraulic pin end. You could strip the engine to the point where you can take the camshafts out, which will receede all the valves on the affected head into their seats, then carry out a cylinder leak down test - this will show if any valves have been damaged/bent. If they have then the head will have to come off. I have never taken exhaust manifolds off in situ on any of the V10 or V8 engines, you may be able to to get the head off but I personally find dropping the whole engine and box assembly much, much easier and pleasant to work on.
