The door handle on the Subaru legacy I recently purchased had a non-working door handle. I was able to remove and repair it. Please subscribe if you like the video!

    I just halfway finished this job, Halfway because I was not comfortable with doing a glue job on the broken handle. So I ordered one from Amazon $30. The bad news is 1.) I had to put the car back together until I get the amazon parts and 2.) my car has the painted handles so I am going to have to remove it again to have it painted. The car had a small bumper tag that is scheduled to be repaired in the spring so when U take it in for that I will have the body guy shoot it with the same color as the bumper. A couple of points on the job: 1.) I found to be much easier to remove the door latch mechanism (3 screws) and move it out of the way. It made getting to the rear bolt a snap. My 1/4 drive socket wrench would not fit between the bolt head and latch mechanism, and I am sure I could never have gotten the bolt restarted. 2.) Be very careful when you remove the door handle. The sheet metal is very flimsy and bends easily. I made a small dimple in the door and the handle does not appear to weather seal as well as it did. When I do the reinstall I am going to use a tiny bit of caulk My final comment is: what a rinky dink piece of junk the door handle is. Though in fairness the car is 13 YO with 170K mi. I am going to have the body guy hold on to a bit of his mix as I a sure at least the drivers door will fail before the Suby heads for the scrap yard.

    This is exactly what happened to mine. I also had the unfortunate circumstance of having the child lock set and had to push a plastic piece through to jam it open. At least now it opens from the inside until I can find the pieces in the bottom of the door like this fine gent.

    Thanks for posting a great how to video. I had the same exact issue happen to me this morning on my '06 Legacy Wagon. Watched your video and fixed the handle before the day was over. I would have never thought to fish out the broken plastic piece and use super glue to put it back together. Definitely easier to follow than my Haynes manual.

    Same problem here, I actually was stuck at the pulling out after removing the two bolts and I was disappointed you couldn't show it but finally got it out by pushing on the two tabs like you said with a large flathead screwdriver I most often use as a pry bar. I had the same idea to epoxy it but felt it would not be solid enough, the pressure applied while using the handle seems to be quite significant and will most likely make the epoxy crack after a while. I'll try to drive a long thin screw through the plastic after supergluing it and then epoxy generously. I'll let you know how long it holds.

    Finally did the exact same thing without the screw, although with a different epoxy than the one I normally use (this one's not available anymore, probably because it was too low quality) Holding on pretty good so far, thanks again!

Just have to find out why my cable is so short that I can't just pop it out and disconnect to resolder the circuit board. I pro ably have to remove more panels to get to it.

  • @amcrae1

    @amcrae1

    6 жыл бұрын

    If that's the case, I would personally drill a few holes in the trim (along the bottom and then put in a hook tool and just pull it straight out... then as you pull the trim out also lift it a bit to get it up off the top window edge... I think that will work. There are no screws holding this in, just fasteners.....

  • @amcrae1

    @amcrae1

    Obviously, you don't try to "lift" until you have all the lower fasteners pulled out!

    James... was thinking today... you might be able to use a big suction cup (such as a dent puller) to get the panel off instead of drilling holes!
