    I'm all for the Evo 9 as my next car just because there is zero financial risk. You know these cars are going to appreciate in value. Everyone that grew up admiring these cars are just now beginning to get a job and afford them. Also, it's a good idea to strip down the entire car and give it a extensive cleaning and oiling. That will get you familiar with what problems it may have and what needs to be fixed. I want to keep mine stock forever and just rack up thousands of smiles.

    Yeah these are one of these cars that were always ridden hard and put away wet. People beat the ever living shit out of them, finding one that isn't a lemon, original and not monkeyed with is a rarity. Same thing with Mark IV Supras, that's one reason stock ones are so expensive, none of them left. The import guys are a totally different owner group than Corvette guys, literally there are 25 different C4 and C5 Corvettes for sale in my area with less than 20k miles on them in showroom stock, collector grade #1 or #2 condition.

    Also your comment about early 2000's cars, it's absolutely true. Ive owned two, currently an '04 WRX, and my first car was my dad's base model 2000 Jetta, which he bought new a month before I was born. He drove it until he got a 2013 Elantra, and it waited 3 years until I got my license. Had a lot of fun with it but it didn't last long because it was an old car that spent it's entire life in Quebec and New Hampshire, which meant rust (and if you've been to Quebec you will know how abysmal the roads are). So I drove it from the time I got my license until around Christmas 2017 when all the rust finally took it's toll on the car, I got the WRX in spring 2018, and I've done no mods so far (on that tight college budget now) Edit: if anyone wants to know, the Jetta was a 5-speed bought in October '99

    Mitsubishi awd on snow is sketchy at best. It's good, but sketchy. Like would I trade it for fwd? No. But would I trust my buddy to drive my sketchy awd mitsubishi other than in a snowy parking lot.. Also probably no. You have to get a feel for how it responds in snow conditions. Over steer and understeer can be controlled but it won't do what you'd expect say a fwd or rwd to do in many situations.

    Few people know this but Volvo made from '96 to '04 the V40 wagon which shared the same chassis with the Mitsu Evo. Some parts like brakes and suspension components are somewhat interchangeable. If you can get a T4, you get a 2 liter turbo with around 200 HP, but it's underrated and with easy mods you can easily go to 250+, some with a manual too, but only in FWD. I don't know if they were sold in the US though. Here in Europe they dirt cheap and a lot of fun.

    This is about exactly how I feel towards tuning my Forester XT. The car is really fun as-is, and trying to wring more out of the engine will almost certainly end in sadness. Some bolt-on piping and maybe a tune to smooth out any bumps in the stock one are all it needs.

  • @MidnightMiata
    @MidnightMiata5 жыл бұрын

    Okay, the reason why Evo's blow up is because a lot of tuners suck. There's a dude local to me pushing 500whp on a stock bottom end Evo 8 with 150k miles on it. Given that's on e85 and on 93 he makes 450, which is still respectable. Tuner is Drunkmann tuning, if you want to see it run.

    To all those who haven't owned/driven an evo (regardless of year), it is not a chick magnet, gold digger, boy racer, richer type of car. From experience, it's purely an enthusiasts car. Nothing but you and the road which is what we don't get much of nowadays. Some comfort but the feeling you get driving these underrated beasts is like the time you first get your full license. Oh come on, I drove around for 3 years, 47,000 miles making 650 wheel on e85, if I had to use 91 Californian piss, I made about 475ish wheel. That's 47,000 after the build, without ever having to tear it down, get stuck on the side of the road or have any major problems. As long as you do things right, there is no reason the 4g63 has to be any less reliable than any other motor. Evos are fragile because stupid and cheap people like them as much as people who know how to and can afford to build a proper car.

    450whp. 4 years. Not a single problem for reliability other than the usual parts that need replacing with old cars. Except the IAC which was a cheap fix. Also if you think there is no aftermarket support for the 4g63 to rebuild etc if you blow yours up, you'd be mistaken... because you can take em out of a lot of different vehicle models. Here in Australia it's limited to just Sydney for all the Evo parts haha, but getting parts from Japan imo..far easier for the US to get em than Australia.

It's about to hit 200,000km and has been totally reliable. Just kept ontop of the maintenance. Had it up for sale for 8 months but couldn't deal with selling it for the bottom dollar people are asking. It's daily duties are just about over. Time to become a weekender, restore some of it's daily blemishes and maybe up the power a little more ;)

    @@EhRandomGuy Sounds like flimsy reasoning. Evo X had a lot of improvements on the Evo 9. Evo X had a 50%~ stiffer chassis, better AWD system and an Improved/lighter motor with better heat displacement, dual MIVEC and some added creature comforts.

    @@Djhinn I'll admit to it, it's absolutely flimsy reasoning on my part, but I've never gotten over the apparent dimmed and watered down _raw_ driving experience from the previous gen's. I mean, sure, the Evo X got a better and safer structure all around, better braking and better handling over its predecessors, no doubt. Newer cars will always perform better. But the added heft of all the new additions (despite the shaved off weight from the engine and the use of Al all-around like usual), on top of the increased size seems to make the car even stockier and sluggish. Moving on from the 4G63 was also a bit sad. (To be completely honest, I just don't like the tame looks and the aesthetic changes made to it)
