Going to be doing this job with my son tomorrow. I've done plenty of valve cover gaskets over the years, but not much work on Fords, and never a gasket on a plastic valve cover, so a bit of a new experience for me. Your video certainly helps me to familiarize myself with the procedure, and what things I will need to move out of my way to get good access.

Really great video!!! Just bought an 05 2.0 with a 114,000 for a beater. Took home from used car lot and ran into the exact same thing. Started pulling the non oem plugs out to change with motorcraft and the last cylinder boot had oil. Not as bad as you. When pulling the plug that oil went into the cylinder. I was able to get 80% out and reinstalled the old plugs and fired up. Smoked for about 20 seconds and cleared. Ordered the gasket and will install new plugs once the gasket is installed. Thanks again for an informative video!!!

This is a super great video for replacing that valve cover gasket! For those back wire retaining clips, they get super brittle because of the constant heat up and cool down of the engine with them sitting right above the exhaust manifold. Plus, ultraviolet light like from the sun is really bad on plastic too. I ended up replacing both of my plastic retaining clips with rubber cushioned metal clamps, 4 x 1/4" lock washers, and 4 x 6M-1.0 nuts, it's a pretty cheap alternative and shouldn't be as susceptible to breaking like the plastic ones are. Thanks again for a great informative video!

Tackled this today with help from your video. I was able to buy just the boots at Advance Auto for about $5/pc. Gave me an excuse to get a small torque wrench for inch pounds, but man it didn't feel like much. I probably would have way over done it by using the German standard Goodentight. Thanks for the videos!

Recently completed this myself for the first time & thought the exact same thing regarding the torque. I actually used a larger torque wrench for foot-pounds & did the conversion. I must have checked like 3-4 different sources to make sure it wasn't a mistake bc to me it really felt like there was still a lot of slack left.

A few other tips that helped me: 1. You might need to use a screw driver to LIGHTLY finesse the valve cover itself loose. Mine was on there pretty good, but once I cracked the seal open it came off easy. 2. You can rent a torque ratchet at Auto Zone. $50 deposit that they give back when you return it within 90 days. 3. I ALWAYS flag any plug that I disconnect with painters tape and I label and number them. It only takes a few minutes to do and it makes reassembly stress free and super easy.

Question. I did this job with the help over your video for my mothers 09 focus S. Thank you so much btw. The question I have is that her car is still really rough idling and I am afraid the pvc valve being clogged somehow caused the gaskets to prematurely break. Is this possible? Also where is the location of the pvc at? Is it on the top right corner of the valve cover where the tube was unhooked? Some help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you again!

Just did this yesterday on my 2010 Focus. Two driver's side plug holes filled with oil. One on end was to the top. Anyhoo, new plugs and gasket, 80% of rough idle gone so coil packs next in line. Wet rubber boots were a little chubby. Side note. Leaking cover gaskets on a 2005 Subaru Outback actually displayed marks on the spark plug, a distinct brown line, where the spark was traveling down the outside of the plug into the block.

Sometimes, it shuts off right away... sometimes it runs for 10 -20 seconds then shudder and shuts off.... sometimes it doesn't... sometimes, I managed to shut it off with the key removed by simply hitting the door lock/unlock button in the radio console.... any ideas what could be the root cause....an relay stuck closed or an ignition switch... or something else? Thx

A question: I was doing the plugs on my 05 2.0 and found oil in the wells. None on top in the trough, and none around the valve cover. AFAIK the car went its 12 year 85k mile life on those original plugs, and the plugs themselves looked OK. Is it OK to watch this problem and see how severe it is before doing this work? I feel like I've got the potential to create more problems than what could have been a very, very slow oil leak into a few of the plug wells. Also: amazing video. I've watched a few of yours and they are easy to follow and really well shot! And this is coming from a massive critic of this kind of work. So thanks!

I did this on my 05 Focus 2.0L last year, but don't think I put the dab of sealant on those two spots by the cover. There is a little leakage in those spots, do you think it would be worth it to pull the cam cover back off and dab some sealant on there? Great video BTW, wish I had seen it last year!

Still recommend that Bosch PS41-2A small impact driver or have you replaced it/upgraded? I'm looking for a small and handy like that. For use on my car and home.

I competed this same task on my 2008 Ford Focus SE. I have 2 questions. I did everything else spot on but there are two concerns I have. First concern is I did not use sealant when reattaching the cover . Is that a big deal? And my second concern is there was a very small amount of residual oil in the plug seats, is that a big deal?

Off topic (but could be related) Do you know the actual part number for the pcv valve and hose for the 2010 model? Thank you! This might be a reason why the gasket of the cover needs replacing.

It's a good video, would make one suggestion though I wouldn't use a rag to wipe the gasket surface or push down near the timing chain because the rags deposit lint they don't want to get into the engine and ultimately end up in the oil pickup screen, I rebuilt transmissions for 40 years in many times I saw do-it-yourselfers wipe parts with rags and you although you can't see it once they filled it with fluid and started the thing all the lint got sucked up into the filter and I saw many times where it actually plugged the filter up. the valve cover operation probably wouldn't put that much lint into the engine but I think I would use paper towels just to avoid any possibility of lint contamination

Used this video as my guide and got it done. My hiccups/advice for others: 1) I got sprayed with gas when removing the line since the engine was hot. Would have gone bad if it hit something hot like exhaust manifold. Need to at least wrap rags around it before removing. 2) New gasket wouldn't stay in place, kept falling out. I used grease to hold it in place. 3) Some of that silicone you scrape off had been in a bad spot and seemed to deform the lip around the valve cover sealing surface on mine.

Hi, good video, question, is it worth putting sealant on the three gaskets in the center as these seem to be the only ones that leak.

Potentially an issue on the newer ones as well? It is the same engine after all, just GDI.
