I am glad you didn't reuse the old, damaged exhaust manifold. FYI any time exhaust manifold turn gray it has been over heated. Overheating is due to lugging the engine. when car makers started making auto trans with multi speed transmissions such as 5,6,7,8,9, and 10 or more. putting trans selector in drive and driver never drop down to low gear when going up hills they let the so call grade logic/computer trans do the work of shifting to low gear and it does but not go low enough to overcome the hills and it start to lug the engine and exhaust manifold gets hot and warp and start breaking bolts. Its not the poor design, its poor driving habit.

So on my 2004 Dodge ram the only way I could stop the head pipe and the two bolts were working loose and leaking was to cut that section out and put a flex joint pipe in there in a flat flange with a gasket which allows the torque of the engine to work with the flex joint so the exhaust does not leak at that point anymore. However the exhaust manifold bolts to the Head will periodically need to be retightened they do work loose as the gasket mashes.

Alot of these manifolds are warped from the heat. I check them with a straight edge and have them resurfaced if they are warped. Aftermarket manifolds like Dorman may not always fit correctly so retain oem when possible.

I just today finished doing this on a 2014 dodge ram, Pass side was Ok but the driver side is a bear, That year has the dipstick tube one the inside of the steering column and the two AC lines down across the manifold also. and I also had two broken studs on driver side with nothing sticking out.

I welded a nut on the piece of the studs sticking out of the head and was able to get a wrench on it and get the stud out without drilling it. Took me about 10 minutes. The back two bolts were broken off on each header

I have a 2004 ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi with about 180k miles. No exhaust manifold leaks right now. However, would you recommend I replace all bolts now anyways as a preventative maintenance? From my understanding this is a common problem.

Well, there's actually a bit of common sense to it. Number one, the bolts would be replaced so the ones that are about to break don't snap off in the head. More importantly, when these bolts snap off the manifold becomes junk in short order. It warps. So, he'd be saving having to deal with snapped off bolts ( a real problem if he doesn't own a welder with gas) and buying a new manifold. I say it's a real smart move to spend the 80 bucks for new bolts and gasket from Mopar and do the job on a Hemi with 180K. And no, I wouldn't put antiseize on the new bolts either. The old ones come out on these rusted up old trucks just fine. They need 18ft lbs torque and when you put on anti seize now what are you going to do? Torque to 10 ft lbs. Too risky on something like this for little to no gain.

Happens to all hemis, I'm gonna replace mine with aftermarket headers and new cam kit. Also the single over head cam is a bad design, idling kills the cam and lifters bc its not sitting in the crankcase, only gets lubrication above 1500 rpm

I was just told from the dealership that my truck has rusted bolts on the exhaust manifold which is causing a leak. I do all my work myself besides what I just had done (broken valve spring) these fools wanted to charge me $2,200 to replace the manifold & bolts saying it would take about 3-4 hours on each side..

@@billmarty2209 I got 0 problems with BOTH my rams. Man the 2003 didn’t have any problems throughout its whole life and it’s got 250 plus thousand miles on it. Original hood shocks on any high mileage vehicle are gonna go at some point. Change em your good for another long time. My 2003 had its ball joints changed twice. Everything else is original. It has a rough country 4 inch lift, rough country shocks. Rides better. K&N air filter, hypertech tuner, Gibson exhaust system and headers, stock catalytic converter. Other than that it’s all original everything still good works great still a powerhouse. My daily now is a 2017 1500 that basically has the same lift but is 5 inch. Carven exhausts, tune, I also put in the shifter stock because I hated that stupid knob you get for your transmission. I love my older truck and I’m not selling that one I want it to rot into the ground when I go. It’s got the column shifter stock and manual floor shifter for the 4wd. Perfect truck with those little luxuries. It’s perfect for me. The newer one is more comfortable and quieter. My old truck sounds like a 426 hemi. Fuckin loud with those headers! Good trucks. The muffler on my 2017 ram is bit larger that truck I might put headers on it too. I like the way it sounds as is so it’s something to think about. I keep it clean I garage it in the snow and I do more work with the old one. The old one is a winter/ enjoyment vehicle. It had rust when I bought it. I restored it and undercoated the frame. Same with my new one. Up here in NY the road salts eat away the metal……. That shit rotted the rear fenders on my older truck (original owner bought brand new and daily drove took fantastic care of it) it’s a daily so that’s what you get can’t stop it if you always used it. The guy did a lot himself with it too. He kept maintenance up on it. Got it what it needs. When I bought it, every fluid was new on it and it had new tires. Before he parked it he serviced it, bought new tires. The original owner I know well. There’s a little something about them lol

@@billmarty2209 ….MY DASHBOARD IS PRISTINE. Whole interior is clean. Frame has barely any surface rust. Just my rear fenders had rust and my rocker panels. Those got replaced and I repaired the rust it had. Truck looks factory now aside from the dents but I kept those because it adds character and there’s already few small scratches and rust specs on it. Old daily drove vehicle. Why not. I got the annoying ass rust off. Surprised me and original owner never cut our stomaches bending over on it to reach in the bed.
