2004 Country Captain Chicken MRE Yet Another One of the Worst Meal Ready-to-Eat Tasting Test Review
Ойын-сауық
An extremely well preserved example of yet another one of the worst MRE's ever produced.
The translation from fresh to shelf stable, was unsuccessful in this curry dish from the Indian Subcontinent, making it's way to American trays through Savannah Georgia, Charleston South Carolina, and New York.
It was also General George S. Patton's favorite dinner. A hopeful and patriotic approach to what could have been a terrific and well received menu, it didn't work out with the troops and was phased out after a 4 year service time, ranging from the year 2000 to 2004.
Personally, I have a strange affinity for this menu, but many others didn't during it's prime time of usage 20 years ago.
This is a fun one.

Unbelievable, this has been sitting somewhere on a warehouse shelf for 10 years, then got sold to a surplus store, has been sitting there for another 4 years or so, then sold to some private person, sitting in his basement for another 6 years and then sold to Steve for his enjoyment. I’d even love to see him sitting down with some of the vets who comment on here, explaining how they normally ate the mre he posted. It would be cool if they could show him the insider info as he’s eating instead of him finding out after he already finished some rare mre that he may not find again that he didn’t optimize the experience.

Steve, I'm so glad you got this menu out on the tray. Veteran here, and I was in Iraq from September 2003-2004. Chow halls had not really been set up when i was there, so we got an MRE for lunch everyday. My favorite was the menu 10 chili mac. I always used to mix half my cheese spread and all of the ground red pepper into the main and it was always delicious. I didn't know any guy that liked country captain chicken. I tried it once, and it was weird. It was like I just didn't know what was going on with it. The ones I always stayed away from were this one and menu 12 black bean and rice burrito. Not sure what was in that retort pouch, but it sure wasn't a burrito. Also, that whole year, I never got a coffee that was good and we didn't get any rations older than a year.

Man, watching you open this MRE brings back memories. The peanut butter in those was so thick that it stuck to your ribs literally. My dad said that they used to gamble their rations in the field to avoid the worst ones or to get more of the best parts. He would bring some of them back for us because of the peanut butter. I brought one to school and prepared it as part of a history project. Good times.
What a great stress reliever. I've been a fan for years, and really missed Steve 1989's ASMR distractions from everyday life. Nice!
Steve is a force multiplier all by himself.
Steve, please dont ever stop. Your content is some of the most wholesome, comedic, timeless I have ever seen. I frequently come back to watch a video for the laughs, to even learn a thing or two or just have as backround noise. I started watching years ago when I was in college. Watched again when I was in the military and am still watching as a "old' vet. Whenever I am eating comfort yet cheap food I think I should flip on a steve review eat my SpaghettiOs or ramen and chillax. I even crack open a old MRE from time to time and eat along. I cant help but stress the diversity, hints of comedy and even educational bits strewn throughout your videos. Truly master class mate. Keep it up! P.S. We missed you.

The worst part of that generation of MRE is they no longer had the freeze dried styrofoam fruit. Those were my favorite thing in the MRE.
@Raskolnikov70

I knew I wasn't the only one that misses those. I joined the Army in the 80's when we still had the original "dirty dozen", the entrees were terrible overall but you couldn't beat the side dishes like the fruit and the nut cakes. Now MRE's are loaded up with sugar and junk food, different tastes these days I guess.

It's been a while since I've seen a mre review and this one didn't disappoint at all. Thanks Steve!
Your video takes me back to that unforgettable day at Fort Knox during CST. It was a refit day for my platoon, but to our dismay, there was a mistake in the supply. We were not issued MREs as planned. However, our resourceful cadre came to the rescue by salvaging five boxes of MREs from a scorching conex. Little did we know, those MREs had been tucked away in storage for over 20 years, seemingly forgotten since the days of President Bush. Among those ancient rations, I had the opportunity to savor the legendary Country Captain Chicken. Surprisingly, despite the lengthy storage, the meal held up relatively well, with its packaging intact. The first bite, though, revealed a hint of staleness that reminded me of the passage of time. Nevertheless, it tasted decent, considering the circumstances. But we quickly learned an essential lesson - never consume MREs that are bloated or discolored.
