I drove one back when it was new. Half throttle gave mediocre acceleration, and full throttle was the same acceleration but with more noise.

I had the unfortunate experience of being in a 2005 one in a Lyft (is there a worse one than the Spectra, because if there is it was that) It was the worst ride I've ever had. Just an absolute mess of the vehicle and I felt very bad for the lady driving it. Clunky transmission, and ridiculously slow at full throttle. (She was clearing flooring it). I understand NOW why the people who owned Kias/Hyundais back when they were s*** are so hesitant with them now that they're actually decent. On a second note, HOW come an absolutely s*** car can do Lyft/Uber as long as it's 2005 or newer and my (actually good) 1999 SAAB can't. _sigh_

I love the craigslist ad where the thumbnail is the instrument cluster, then there's 2 other pictures which are oddly screenshots of pictures, one is of the rear and the other is a random door panel.

I swear cheap ~10 year old east coast cars all have a certain look. Base model econo boxes, dulled earth tone paint jobs, a heavy layer of salt corrosion on everything, faded headlights, multiple dents and big scrapes, steel wheels with missing hubcaps, baked off plastic chrome, disgusting interiors with every crevice packed with the crumbs of Wawa snacks and hair, matted down carpets, and a crusty book of scratched CD's stashed in the door. My gf's last two Hyundais have looked like every sad beater on this show.

@Toxic Potato Biking or riding the bus is a perfectly fine method of travel assuming you're in a city. But once you get out of the city, all of a sudden the nearest grocer's is 5 km away and there aren't any bus lines. the ones that do exist are never on time, and biking simply takes too much time and energy.

I attempted to think of one for about 15 minutes. Couldn't come up with any. KIA's have been selling dime a dozen around the world, even here in Finland and they appeal to the same demographic everywhere. The average-joe for whom a car is just something that should take him from point A to point B. The closest contender is the Toyota Corolla, but even that started to have some character right around the time this car rolled off the production line.

I work as a detailer for a Kia dealership, and a lot of Kia owners really fuck up their cars. I feel like I got an STD sitting in some of them. I once cleaned up a Kia Sedona that is only a few years old - if that, and it looks like a car that's been destroyed by kids over a period of 10 years. Crumbs and sand everywhere, seats stained to hell, and crusty shit all over the nooks and crannies. What a public toilet it was.

  • @codedthreat5981

I used to do recon for a Ford dealership, and the worst car we ever had was a KIA that someone had traded and we had to make it presentable to sell. The tan carpets were stained so bad they were basically black and the seats looked like every drink that was ever in that car got dumped on them and somehow also down the backs of the front seats. After about 3 hours, a lot of steaming and a few other tricks, we got it looking "okay", which I think is all you can hope for with a KIA.

In Brazil, 1.8, 4 speed auto seems like luxury. Most of our cheap cars are manuals with 1.0 engines, at best 1.4 or 1.6. 1.8, man, those are sport engines here. The type that comes in the fancy model of the cheap car. I remember when i was little, and my dad said that his Vectra was a 2.2 L, and i was blown away by the fact that cars with MORE than 2.0 engines EXCISTED.

What's funny about the comparison between a 70's car and a 00's shitbox, is that the difference is almost as drastic in the 10 years that have passed. You can't really buy something that has no options beyond a couple of doors just to keep you in it. It's weird to say, but I kinda miss that. A bunch of the new Kias on the lot didn't have "KIA" badges, but sytled "K"s that looked a crap ton like Lexus "L"s. Craigslist vehicle posters are a different breed. Last week I sent a guy a text about his Chevy Suburban. He said back "read the post!!!" His post has 3 words "Engine Runs rough $1000". I m like "Can I get more info? The Internet is full of raggedy shitboxes there is no obligation to buy yours. Why dont you just take the $300 to junk the thing instead of trying to be greedy and unload that sad sack of bolts on other people." Most all of the Suburbans, Tahoes and Yukons on NY Metro Craigslist all with 200-300,000 miles and bad transmissions or motor issues and everyone thinks their crap is worth $3000. Then you have all the guys with the Durangos and Grand Cherokees who always say "the car needs a $15 part from PepBoys but they havent gotten around to getting it" or putting it in. Then there was the one guy whose Suburban was misfiring on two cylinders and had a gas tank leak and said "if I dont sell it now, I ll just wait until the winter and raise the price". This was under the guise that a 4 wheel drive is more desirable in the wintertime but regardless of the fact that his piece of shit didnt run right(and would run worse in the winter time). Then there are the guys who shamefully wont admit they dont know anything about cars and dont wanna pay anyone to find out what is wrong with theirs. So they always say "The wife says it has to go." Putting all of the responsibility for vehicle maintenance and ownership on some unknown woman.

My friend had one in highschool. His spectra was a few yrs old, gotten her handed down from his parents. Out of our group she was the newest car by far & having a/c when summers @ 100°+ was very welcoming. we hooned around as much as she would hoon, stuffing 5 (at times im sure 6) people to lunch, skate park, parties, etc & she took it all like the champ she was. In a way it seemed like we were collectively moving up a little in the world , a step in the right direction even if it was just a kia. Being used to late 80s/early 90s pos cars with all the abuse you'd expect of 16/17yr old kids - she was the prom queen. Not needing to plead with parents to drive their newish taurus only to (rightfully) get an hr lecture on " if you so far as get a scratch you'll be dead meat." The spectra was luxurious high school freedom

One of my recent-ish cars was a 2001 one of these. I drove that car like I hated it (I did). Got it at auction for 900 bucks. Never rotated the tires, never fixed the iffy ball joint, never gave it an oil change when it required one the day I bought it... That car owed me nothing. I drove it for 2 years like an abusive narcissist. Sold it to a Phillipino immigrant who desperately needed a car for $500 and I still see her driving it around 4 years later. This car is boring, and bloody awesome.

4:10 - I feel like as an owner of one of these, the five speed responds MUUUUCH better! I can be 25 mph in 5th gear barely press the gas pedal (above cruise pressure) and you will be at 35-40 before you know it. The is the only car I've had where I absolutely HAD to pay attention to the speedometer. It's also the only stick I've ever had that doesn't require me to down shift to go up hills - city or highway - it's simply just wants to go! Maybe the power "issues" came down to one factor: automatic transmission. If that's the case, it's not fair to bash a whole line of cars for one option that was on maybe half of them, possibly less.

They really are a coin-flip of close to mint for their age, or looking like hell.) The car really is a Regular-worthy one though. I think of it as the superimposition of everything right and wrong with GM as the year ticked over from '99 to 2000. Everything right about it says this is what would have been done in the Firebird if the designers were allowed the time to finish. Everything wrong about it says the designers weren't allowed to make it better than the Gran Prix. In mind of the superimposition it represents, I think he should do a side-by side worthy hell-beat and clean one. Also SE and GT. Meanwhile, Roman needs to work on that SOAD parody that is period-correct and oh-so-fitting.

@ 01:48 I didn't mind that the beginning of the 2000's were stuck in the 90's. These times were much simpler. The days that my parents got mad at me for tying up the landline on dial up or talking to a friend for hours on end. The days that I had a beeper and it was cool (still have a beeper in 2016). The days that I got in trouble all the time watching Bevis and Butthead on MTV. The days of me making mix cassette tapes from local radio stations and staying up late on Sunday nights listening to Love Phones (like this comment if you remember this late night radio show) The days of cheap gas. You have no idea how much road farming was done in my 89 Camry with my friends. The days that you couldn't take the computer or TV with you. The days that I rented VHS tapes and getting fined for not rewinding them. The days that I was addicted to Super Mario Kart, TMNT Tournament Fighters, Street Fighter, Top Gear and Super Mario world on SNES. The times before texting was popular. The days of the good old analog bag phones were cool. The days before the iPhone was invented, then in my opinion it was down hill from there. I can name a lot more good things about the 90's and even the late 80's. They were good times, and I miss them. I love your channel, and I love the references of video games, music, and moves of this time period. They don't make good movies anymore like they did in the 80's and 90's. You do good work and I enjoy the joy and laughter that you give me when I watch your vids. We need good, cheap, basic cars like we did in the 90's and 00's. Today's vehicles have too much technology and are too expensive. Something's gotta give ya know and I think your channel has a legitimate purpose.

don't forget, Kia was pushing the $159 down, $159 a-month+ 10 year warranty, to help get them to where they are today..................or something like that...

Funny that you mentioned a number of things in this that points to a few of my own experiences. First, I bought a 94 Explorer from the back of a lot. 4 door manual. A unicorn with the Explorers. The day I picked it up. Low fuel light was on and they didnt even vacuum it. Clearly I got it "As traded" Second, I had a 2006 Suzuki Forenza. It was garbage. Oil leak a 3000 miles and a dealer that really didnt care since it was a $12k car. It was in the silver/gray color. It got clipped and rear ended all the time. No one could see it on the road. One of the best days was when I traded that car in for what I owed on it.

As someone who inherited a mid-00s Hyundai as their first car (albeit a xg), this is the exact experience. It takes a beating, it's unassuming, and the electrical system is just crappy enough to scare you once in a while without actually dying on the road. Still probably the nicest stock speakers I've heard though.

Never drove a cheaper vehicle than my wife's spectre, but hey. Reliable and great mileage though which is perfect for a middle aged mother

I had a 2002 Kia Spectra GSX, it was actually reliable... I was younger and didn't do oil changes as often as I should have. it always delayed it's reverse gear and it would simply putter; going up hill was a huge challenge! Now I have a 2004 Lincoln LS V8. Love it, it has guts, looks nice, but I will admit that I've taken it into the garage more than my Kia. Sometimes I kinda miss that little car...

YES! Those beige/silver metallic paint jobs are like street camouflage. My wife had a silver Buick that kept getting hit by other drivers (including a city bus) who swore they didn't see her.

A few years ago, I purchased an 09 Sedona, I got it from a dealer and Allentown, it had under 22k miles (it now has under 40k miles) and it was well maintained. From the service records left in the glove box, I saw that an older gentleman owned it before me so it has some of the grandpa parking pole dings and some bumper rash but the rest of the car is straight as an arrow. The interior looked new and smelled good, the center console hardly looked like it was used, the head unit and center control buttons looked factory fresh and the seats showed no sign of ass hours. And yes, the audio system does sound impressive for the base model, I do not have the infinity system audio system but I dont need it. After a few weeks of having the car I decided it would be a great car to drive to NC for a short road trip and surprisingly, the car did very well. You can tell its an older six cylinder from the gas mileage I was getting but it has adequate power and gets out of its own way. I plan to keep my 09 Sedona until the engine or transmission goes out but, if the mileage is low enough, I wont mind paying to get the trans rebuilt.

A car for those who love to go to Taco Bell at 1 in the morning and order the worst shit to eat at that time, that ultimately your bowels won't agree to. On top of that, a huge soda drink that won't fit in its cup holder. Don't forget to get the collection of mild and hot sauces that will litter the entire car from other visits to Taco Bell.

I owned a 2001 Kia Sephia for 10 years. Reliable but made with cheap materials such as indoor/outdoor carpeting and stickered name plates, To me, it was a classic case of "don't laugh it runs".
