    Inhale and exhale completely to oxygenate the lungs and tissues of your body, then exhale completely before opening the door to space. You'd have about 30 seconds under the best conditions to get back into a pressurized environment before losing consciousness.

    Bowman was a bad ass and worthy of being a star child. Even when his fellow astronaut was most likely dead he goes out of his way to retrieve pooles body. Then there's this scene. And then even after all that (crew dying, Hal's betrayal and subsequent deactivation, etc) he continues with the mission and goes off with his little pod straight into the giant monolith. Balls man

  • @ralphgoodman4670

    @ralphgoodman4670

    Peter The Tool that was what Dave saw in the final video, it explained the mission that was Kept Secret from the two astronauts Dave and Frank. Apparently that secrecy is what made HAL go crazy when they talked about disconnecting him, since it would jeopardize the Mission, which had top priority over the lives of the crew. So Dave had to complete the mission as the sole survivor, to land on the monolith. Then he got assimilated by it... and the King reunited with Frank Poole in the year 3001 when they found his body a thousand years later and revived him. Because a giant Diamond fell on the monolith and damaged it, causing it to try to destroy the Earth, and they had to stop it from doing so by uploading every computer virus ever known to it.

    What I liked most about this sequence was, after the explosion, as point of view shifts to the air lock, there IS NO SOUND, which is so accurate, in the vacuum of space. I get so tired of all the sound effects in space battles in movies, which of course is impossible as no sound carries through vacuum. By the way, I saw this film in 1968 in wide screen theater first release. It was such a giant step forward in movie making. Truly a turning point in film making.

    @@mcgavin098 Not necessarily, the amount of air the pod is able to hold is not very much. Once it all escapes, the resulting force probably would have pushed him out about twice as fast as we saw in the film. The reality is that the pod wasn't really large enough to hold enough air to have propelled him at significant speeds. Had the pod been larger, the internal volume would be several times larger, and thus, the force of the air escaping would be much stronger

The flat screens in 2001 are the bomb. 16mm projections behind the glass, I think. Which means for the main console in the centrifuge they had 12 of them going at once, all sel-sync'ed to the big old 65mm camera.

    I like the technical aspects of the explosive bolt sequence. It feels exactly like the kind of real, overly-complicated safety sequence you'd expect to find on such a vital piece of equipment. It reminds me of the scene from "Alien" when Ripley is arming the self-destruct on the Nostromo. In the JJ-verse, there would probably just be a big, red "Blow the Hatch" button (probably located right next to the power button). It's important to build tension in a scene like this.

    I finally found out how they did the zero-g in this scene. They put the camera in the floor pointing 90 degrees vertically, so the set was really a drop shaft. There was an unseen rope tied to Keir Dullea's back, and on the other end there was a circus roustabout. When he jumped face-first towards the camera, the rope was knotted at a certain point, and when the knot reached the right position the roustabout would jump off as a counter-weight and yank Dullea back up; the rope was strategically twisted so that it would look like he was spiraling in zero-g. Basically he had to do a swan dive off a 15-foot drop and hope like hell something didn't go wrong when it was time to stop him from hitting the floor. How about that, badass stunts make badass movie scenes.

  • @Doctor699

    I think in the making of Dullea said they did this shot in one take. He took a dive and it worked out perfectly. Not something you'd want to do twice.

  • @andysmith1996

    @andysmith1996

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've seen Dullea say this but it just doesn't make sense to me. If that whole airlock set was 10 metres long, it would take Dullea _one_ second to fall from one end to the other. How was this roustabout going to react to the knot arriving and jump off within a fraction of a second? Then, he has to react to a second knot while falling? And, for all that, we don't see Dullea fall towards the camera and bounce back in the one shot. In the actual scene, the shot of him falling towards the camera could have been done just with a fixed line. The next shot of him hitting the wall and bouncing back could have been done by the wall being on the ceiling, they pulled him on a wire quickly up towards it, then let him go once he'd reached the end. We can see these were separate takes, too, because as he falls towards the camera his hands are close in to his face and his legs are together. When we see him from behind, his arms look more widespread and his legs are clearly wider apart. When he bounces back, his legs are generally straight out, but in the next shot when we see him heading towards the pod his legs are bent at the knees.

    I remember reading something about this scene; meaning it was going to shot a different way, or he had his helmet, whatever. During filming I believe that a pilot flying very high, high enough that his blood could boil and his eyeballs freeze and pull all the air from his lungs at that altitude,. His cockpit was pressurized and he lost his canopy, he did not have his O2 mask on. he allowed the air to leave his lungs because if he held his breath his lungs would shred. Anyway, he managed to get his mask on, but he had to keep his eyes closed so they would not freeze, he bailed out high, but survived. So Kubrick wanted that type of scene in the movie because it could be done in a total vacuum. Perhaps somebody else knows about this. Thanks.

    @@arxalier2956 That depends. A spacecraft large enough to have an airlock may be pressurized with air at sea-level pressure, but a spacesuit could not be, because under full air pressure it would be like a fully inflated balloon and the astronaut couldn't move their limbs, so spacesuits use pure oxygen at partial pressure. Transitioning from air to partial pressure requires time pre-breathing pure oxygen while still in full pressure to get nitrogen purged from the body and avoid getting the bends in the low-pressure environment. If an astronaut might do an EVA from their pod, they couldn't go straight from air to oxygen very quickly, so it's likely the pod, and thus the pod bay too would be a pure-oxygen environment. The living area of Discovery could be air or a compromise like the 25% nitrogen low-pressure atmosphere of Skylab, which would make transitions to pure oxygen a quicker process.

Keir Dullea at the recent Egyptian Theatre screening a few days back mentioned that this was him on a notched cable, with a circus performer tied to the other end to counterbalance. Once Keir was lowered all the way (coming towards the camera), the counterbalance performer moved to the next knot on the rope and jumped off the top again, causing Keir to go up in the air (away from the camera). Keir said that they would've usually done stuff like this with a stunt performer, but with this scene that was impossible, because of his missing helmet in this scene!

    HAL 9000 calculated that David would not do what he said he would as he would risk dying quickly in the vacuum of space if he failed, far sooner than if he remained inside of the safety of his EVA pod. Therefore, to preserve life, David would not attempt it. What David would be thinking is that, even though he could be killed quickly in the attempt to enter via the emergency airlock, he's dead anyway if he doesn't get back aboard the _Discovery One_ as his EVA pod won't support his life for very long. Therefore, with the reward of success being survival, David gambles that he can seal and pressurize the airlock chamber before losing consciousness in his attempt to get back aboard his ship.

My only quibble is that the pod's door would have preceded Dave Bowman into the airlock, propelled by the same gush of air, where it too would have bounced off the inner wall and begun flying around. That would have made filming the scene far more complex so that's the only reason that I can imagine that Kubrick elected not to be completely accurate.

    That's an interesting point because Stanley Kubrick went back and forth on that because it wasn't known if something like what you describe would have happened. The issue was settled for the scene to be with Bowman without his helmet after Kubrick learned of the results of some experiments with animals exposed to explosive decompression by the Air Force. Here's a more detailed discussion on this scene by a scientist who works at NASA. www.geoffreylandis.com/vacuum.html

    From the standpoint of filming the scene, I can imagine the door would have been moved horizontally relative to the camera's perspective while camouflaged with the cloud of smoke in order to allow Keir Dullea to be lowered into the airlock set. However, the explosive bolts are clearly situated around the edges of the door both in the interior and exterior perspectives which would indicate that their purpose would be to cut bolts holding the door in place around its perimeter.

Using a voice actor who convey information in sarcasm to dig at the human implies that it is afraid of direct confrontation. If it wants to induce psychological agony, it would just do that more overtly. If it didn't care, it would go lengths to hold back. These passive-aggressive stuffs just dispel the magic.

    The pressure difference is only 1 atmosphere. It's like coming up from a few meters down in the water, only your body was built to live at that depth for all its life. The gruesome stuff that happend to diver happens at 8 atmospheres or so.
