A brilliant video, as always :) I feel that the games in this episode were definitely more interesting that those in the previous (no insult intended, it's just my personal taste!) _Segasonic Bros._ , _Hard Drivin's Airborne_ , _RIP Squad_ , _Ghost Lop_ , _Recalhorn_ , and _Beavis & Butthead_ are all games I'd like to try, as is _Slipstream_ - it looks brilliant, and I'm usually far from a fan of that (technological) genre of racing game; _Asylum_ also seems interesting, but far too slow and viewed though too small a "window".
@onaretrotip

Yeah, quite a few here that really appeal to me too, including Slipstream. Agree that Asylum has a very narrow playfield, but that would be full screen in a Tate arcade cabinet.

Yeah I meant that was late for DOS only games, most around that time were DOS and Windows. Considering DOS games were being released from the late 70s I’d say the last half of the 90s was late. The mid 90s was the golden age for DOS in my opinion though, so I agree!

_Hard Drivin' Airborne:_ "Still, it's an odd concept, and one that's perhaps a bit unnecessary" --- I take it you haven't played _'Rush 2049'_ then? ;) (the Dreamcast version, not the Arcade version. But the DC version is the version on _Midway Arcade Classics Vol.3)_ My man, if you ever get the chance, you should give it a shot (or the indie racer _'Distance,'_ which took a lot of inspiration from it). Unnecessary gliding + Arcade Racing = some REALLY fun times :) Anyways, another fantastic video! Glad you looked into _'Tenth Degree'_ and found it so interesting! Also, of course, glad you looked into everything else too, because you found a ton of interesting stuff I've never heard of once again! MAN - I can't believe no one's ever done _'Ghost Lop'_ before; adding movement and an almost _'Arkanoid'_ elements to _'Bust-A-Move'/'Puzzle Bobble'_ gameplay is so obvious in retrospect!
@onaretrotip
5 жыл бұрын
I have Rush 2049 on Dreamcast actually but never gave it much time. Maybe I'll give it another chance. Yeah, I loved that they added the Arkanoid style movement to Ghost Lop, and agree that it's weird that nobody had done that before. In fact, has it been done since?
@barry-allenthe-flash8396
5 жыл бұрын
lol, I was wondering that myself since there are so, SO many straight ripoffs of 'Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble' nowadays thanks to stupid mobile games. But that's what they do - they just rip it off and don't bring any kind of innovation or changes to that formula (besides microtransactions). So I thought about it a bit, and I don't think there is! I think 'Ghost Lop' stands alone _to this day,_ as bizarre as that is. Crazy!

I don't know who spread that rumor that Slipstream was only released in Brazil, but it's not entirely true. There are definitely more than 150 boards, and they were also released in the rest of the Latin American region (there was an Hispanic version of the game, and there were plenty left in Mexico after Capcom's offices closed and sold off their remaining inventory).

Once again, awesome work! I know what you mean about these being heart breaking in a way, I look upon them as being someone's work of art, and when they're lost for good it's rather like someone throwing a painting in the trash. But when games like Marble Maddness II and Beavis and Butthead wind up in the hands of a collector I take some satisfaction from that, even if I never get to play or see them in person at least I know they're being preserved.

@@onaretrotip The guys at Entertainment Sciences who made Bouncer must have been particularly devastated, by all accounts their game was GREAT, unique, way ahead of it's time and no doubt destined to be a success. But their hardware design was just too ambitious (it was a monsterous 5-PCB stack in a cage) and thus the costs proved just too impractical for the market, while most games were going for around $2000 at the time Bouncer was going to have to sell for $4000+. If only the ROMs could be found everything else is documented enough be reproduced and there's enough desire for it in the collector community that I can see people putting together complete reproductions, but sadly given all the efforts put in to finding them with no success I think they're simply gone now. At least their game Turbo Sub survives, which is a super fun game in my opinion, though the final, most complete version of it still hasn't turned up.

Thanks, Ian! I'll see what happens. Probably not for now, but maybe in the future.
It's always a shame to hear of a cancelled game from Treasure, there aren't many developers around who look to push the boundaries in the way that they do. A kart racer with boss battles and destructible obstacles is definitely something I'd like to see in the future. The Hard Drivin' sequel was interesting, as you say it's a bit of a strange concept but not so strange that they didn't mind using it for the recent Crew 2. I'm guessing time was the great healer for that slightly whacky idea, and it clearly makes more sense on an open road than it would in closed track races. The Beavis and Butthead game would've been nice to see, a scrolling beat em up would've been the perfect fit, especially coming after The Simpsons arcade game. Nicely shoehorned 'entertain us' gag at the end there! haha
@onaretrotip
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a real shame about Gun Beat. Looks like an interesting concept. Beavis & Butthead looks good too, definitely a Konami/Simpsons beat 'em up vibe there. Haha, had to get that joke in there somewhere.

I've played the predecessor to R-Gear a lot in MAME. It has two playfields and you can instantly attack both. Atari, in the 90s was really about copying others, it appears. I'm not saying other game companies didn't do that, but they make it blatantly obvious. I would've like to played Marble Madness II. I was a huge fan of the original and I had it on the NES. Great video! BONUS!: Play the video during Hard Drivin' Airborne at 1.50 speed.

Yeah, it's odd that they left it so long after the first game really.
It's always sad to hear about cancelled games, but Marble Man is the one that really hurts. The full game exists, but nobody can play it because of greed. Or maybe it's the fickleness of the programmer. I've heard both excuses for why there's no ROM available.

@@onaretrotip It was a video game in development shown as a playable but not finished demo at GenCon one year. Your character was a Fighter, you move back and forth by joystick, forward also by joystick, and swung your sword via button. There is also a few other buttons which pulled down a menu where you can pick party actions in real time (monsters are still fighting you), and call up other party members to do things like cast spells or search for traps or lock pick open chests.
