Excellent video! New subscriber here.. I'm still setting up my Lathe, but I will have to try this! I have a couple of actual Christmas tree off cuts that should work good for this.
Thank you for naming the tools you use and why. That is so helpful to all of the newbies on the lathe 😍

For my spindle and bowl gouges a made a .. gouge sharpening jig... to use on my bench grinder... You can get them on Amazon and Ebay and there are videos on KZread on how to use them or indeed make them... I can't afford the Sorby sharpening system which looks really good... I know that when starting this hobby it can get very expensive with lots of things to buy.. My starter .. to buy list would be... For decades I have turned Christmas trees and snowmen out of the trunk of the prior years Christmas tree. I allocate 3-5 minutes each. After roughing them with a gouge, turn them entirely with a skew chisel. Using a skew, a good turner can leave a tool finish that does not require sanding. I date them with the previous year date and give them away to friends and family.
@AndysCornishCreations

Hi Roger... Well it sounds like you have got it all worked out... Great idea making trees from left over Christmas tree... I hate the skew chisel so I always admire someone who can use it proficiantly... Yes.. great gifts... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

You need to learn to use the skew. It is faster and cleaner than any other cutting method. @@AndysCornishCreations
That's a beauty Andy, I'll have a go at one of those. I didn't quite understand the rounded parting tool - could you make a further comment one of these days? Cheers mate and God bless you all there.
@AndysCornishCreations
Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark... Thank you very much.. I'm glad that you liked it... The parting tool is just a really easy way to finish the bottom of a deep groove.. My gouges wouldn't get down there without catching the wings and the skew chisel would leave it with a sharpe internal cut... and easy to get a catch... I don't like skews... Just rounding off the corners of a 2mm thin parting tool made it quick and easy to finish off what can be an awkward place with no chance of catches and easy to sand... I hope this explains why I used it... Thank you... God bless you and yours... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

@AndysCornishCreations
Жыл бұрын
Hi Rob... Thank you very much... The parting tool works the same as a negative rake scraper but it is only 2mm wide and a conventional scraper couldn't work at that width... It's handy to have something so narrow to round off the those awkward places... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

Hi Rene... I'm not sure about the moisture content... I tend to use Hazel wood and even when using green wood it hasn't cracked when fully dried... @@AndysCornishCreations I know... looks a bit like I am obsessed with my pony tail thingies, which of course I am NOT but I have them in all colours and I am forever looking for the colour that suits the outfit of the day and of course I never find them because they are scattered all over the house and so I keep thinking to myself, if only I had a practical thing to keep them on display... such as your most recent tea candle holder, for example, ha ha ha... You see, I did not even mention it, this proves that I am NOT obsessed with them, ha ha ha... Glad you and Huw (note: rhymes) had a great evening out with your better halves! I must catch up with Huw's videos, I feel so guilty... Change of topic: What do you mean, you never wear shorts?!? What have you got the stove in your workshop for??? From now on, you should be wearing shorts for your videos! I am sure Ivy would appreciate that too... Well, having said that, I have just made the first fire of this winter season in our kitchen stove, so the shorts season is over for this year... as the word implies, it is usually "short", ha ha ha... Enough of this nonsense, you take care Andy, looking forward to your next video! You take care, too, byeeeee! Jude

That could be said about most items, it the Artist, creative spirit that makes each one unique and special. When I gift something I made or painted..they got my time and small bit of my creative spirit..that's the difference in mass made or one by one..
