Existence depends on knowability, Knowability depends on knower Knower depends on consciousness Which depends on something else is false....it is appearance,as name form usage The name form n usage comes in three states, waker, dreamer, deep sleeper...but reality exists as the basis of of these three, that is fourth or turiya, the consciousness. Second time listening...and still awestruck with a sense of humble but respect for myself. Pranam swamiji....this is really the most precious gem. Even the om...om is everything....within time n transcending time...and that is brahman, that is atma, the self...and that is I.

Awesome thankyou swamiji 🙏 When one relates to the primary understanding that all is conciousness , then everything else can only be the mind including the questioner and questions, it's surreal to think that this whole lecture and each person including me , is nothing but a dream manifest ! Thank God for Vedanta and these brilliant teachers that help educate us to this truth 🙏

Thank you so much Swami Ji for spreading the Supreme Truth on KZread, because of your selfless work many people are realizing their Brahmanhood and waking up from the dream of form. Thank you for causing the truth that Brahman is real, the world is an appearance, and we are Brahman (Non-dual). This is so awesome, it is like a man waking from a dream and saying with all conviction, "it was not real" but I am real. Namaste Swami Ji!!!!🙏🙏🙏

Pranam Swamiji, I am very thankful for your KZread lectures on upnishads. They are very insightful and make it easier to understand the profound meanings of the mantras of the upanishad. It has helped me immensely in my Upanishad studies. On your lecture on Mandukya upanishad mantra 2 - inquiry about the self, I have couple of doubts. Especially abut the 5 steps that you have explained for understanding the 4 aspects of Atma. I would be very grateful to you if you can help me clear these doubts. Doubt 1 - Does Atman/Consciousness Exist? You have very well explained that Existence is dependent on knowability, knowability on Knower and Knower on Atman/Consciousness. But if we used the same test for existence of Atman/Consciousness, won’t we conclude that Atman/Consciousness does not not exist as it cannot pass the first test of “Knowability”. We know Atma is not knowable, it is beyond knowledge. In that case we come to a strange conclusion that everything is mythia (false) except the Atman/Consciousness and Atman/Consciousness does not the exist or is “nothing”. So what we are left with is mythia and nothing. Doubt 2 - how can we conclude that existence is dependent on Knower? Knowability of anything does not depend on the knower. There can be an existence which is knowable but it is not known as there is no knower. But the existence can be independent of the knower. The first condition is just the knowability it is not “that it should be known” just the knowability is good enough. Many Thanks in advance. Chirag Doshi Vadodara, Gujarat

Le Soi "transcende" la pure conscience car Il est antérieur, prédominant et connaissant celle-ci! Comme l'a écrit, dans l'Uttara-Gita, Gaudapada:" For the attainment of my desired goal I take refuge in the Self, the entire substratum, unfragmented, beyond the reach of speech ant the mind, existence, pure conscience and bliss." Donc, cette pure conscience est dépendante du Soi; alors que ce dernier, est et en demeure, Indépendant et Libre à celle-là...! Cordialement!

Good commentary. One question, please: while explaining the step #4 about dependent existence, you asserted that a) wood is true and a lectern made of wood is not; b) materiality of gold is real and true while an ornament of gold is not. I feel that none of the materials, regardless of how we experience them, is true and only the energy is real and true. Let me extend your dependency to say, even gold is not real as it is composed of a known set of atomic particles, even the atomic particles are not real as we know certain specific composition of quarks make up the subatomic particles and this dependency chain goes on till the only source of all matter is all-pervading energy or Paramatma. Do you agree?

That the same thought i had.... But it was derailing me from the lecture...so i stopped there....at the wood n lecturn level... But the whole thing actually depends on consciousness...the brahman or atma... From philosophical point n physics point...

Pronam to Revered Swami Sarvapriyananda.I agree with Swami-ji's logic that Prameyam and Pramata do not have any real existence. Now, I put forward a supposition at this point of discussion. I (as knower) can feel the existence of an inanimate object (Prameyam) like a wooden lectern (or "lecternly wood", as per Swami -ji"s logic). On the other hand, such an inanimate object may not feel my existence, as it may not possess any instrument of knowledge to know me. Yet both of these have been put into the same group, false existence/ Mithya, having ?same characteristics. What is it that separates the two in spite of being within the same group? Can the "Prakasha-Bimarsha theory" in Kashmir Shaivism lend a helping hand to explain the fundamentals in this case?

How can you know what the lectern feels? Are you the lectern? You are imposing your experience onto a lectern. The lectern is just an example, not a thing to be debated about. What you know is only known via your awareness and what the Swamiji is saying is that without awareness, nothing, including the lectern, would be knowable by you

Need clarification! We are using the example of Sun, but let us consider the example of black holes for instance. Black holes existed but unknown to all except a handful who understood the science and mathematics. But the experience came much later after the invention of powerful telescopes. Can we therefore say that Knowability is independent of the unknown and the knower?

How can knowability be independent of a knower? Who knows without the knower? See, black holes would've been non existent if there was no possibility of ever knowing them. But it did get hypnotized and known eventually right?

  • @sca8217

Namaskar! For Swamiji's statement about knowability and existence, I would propose this argument : Assuming the force of gravity . We assume that ever since this Universe has existed, objects have grossly observed the laws of gravity. Asteroids changed paths in the vicinity of a big planet. Collapsing stars pulled light surrounding them inwards . And so on. Meaning, even though there was no conscious observer ( at least to the understanding a modern thinker), 'objects' , 'things' grossly followed the laws of Gravity. Would that not be, in a sense, knowability of Gravity? Would that also not imply , therefore, that consciousness exists independent of a conscious observer? This is just my observation in support of Swamiji's statement. And also in support of the broad supposition that consciousness transcends biology.

See, look at his definition of knowable. Something is known or can be known. If during the time gravity was there, and there was a knower, would it know have been known? Don't just be stuck in the past when you think of the knowable. Force of gravity would've been non-existent/meaningless had there been no knower to ever know/experience it. As he explained it with object x.

Rephrase the question? What is understanding existence. Assuming you mean your existence (you as in body mind here). And existence as in physical existence. @@Kipson49 the upanishads say that Atma Can’t be known in a physical sense. Like how one knows objects like a chair table etc. it’s knowledge. And what is the proof of awareness consciousness. You are. Your experiences are. Even dead people have ears. Do they listen? It’s the consciousness that shines through illumines pervades your senses in waking state. Even when you’re in deep sleep, consciousness illumines but it is aware of absence of activity if the mind. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any more questions please. As a general idea, this is subtle knowledge. Subtler than the mind. So any attempt at objectification will fail. It’s what the mind does. Frames it’s understanding of things by objectifying it. :)

Suppose I came to your home , took turn from main road till market as I was there before I had a memory , or i accessed some already built memory to arrive at the destination hence it can inferred as if the present that which is appearing is based on some memories only .lets us suppose that somehow all the previous memory is erased..and that include the texture , knowledge of colours , shapes and forms etc ...then what will be the experience ....i suppose it would be nothing or empty !! And will be non existent...and this required memory on which the experience depends in turn depends on the knowability of the knower ..hence depends on the knower or the experiencer..

We know gravity today hence only we can say that gravity existed billions of years ago even when there was no experiencer. Means its experience/knowing today makes presence of knowability in the past, billions of years ago. If nobody ever experienced it or know it what is gravity, how can he raise the question that it is something which must have existed without knower in the past? We dont experience 10 hands human today , can we raise a question it existed billions of years ago? Todays discoveries makes knowabilities of the things of the past . We r alive makes that we have great grandfathers in the past. We can not tell about the existence of great grandfathers of a non existent/ non experienced Mr XYZ? Such great concepts can only be thought but can not be explained in language. In the lightening , we now know that it is electricity and we can say in the past when there was no knower, it must be electricity. We dont experience honey in it and can say in the past there wasnt any honey in it. When we dont experience anything how can we say that these must have existed in the past?
