2 ALARM HOUSE BOAT FIRE Brick, New Jersey 11/16/21

OC - Brick Township - 840 Route 70- 2RD Alarm
Around 1:30 PM Brick Township got a 911 call for working Boat Dwelling Fire, upon arrival of the chief it was a confirmed working fire. He asked for the upgraded assignment as it was a working fire to a 2nd Alarm. The first due engine rolled it and stretched a 1.3/4 line and the second due engine hit the hydrant on route 70. They held with 3 engines and a ladder fire was knocked pretty quickly then they started to open up. The cause of the fire is unknown.

I'm at quite a loss here. I thought that pumper engines could pump water straight out of the lake... Why run a hose from the hydrant ALLL the way down to the marina, when there is water right there, billions of tons of it?....

Other than people not wearing SCBA, and not having a RIT crew at the dock with throw bags and life rings in case someone fell in, (which is a SAFETY issue not tactics), I really didn't see anything wrong with the tactics. The only thing worse than boat fires are Class D - metal fires. And even then, a metal fire can still be managed. Boat fires are hot, the stuff all melts and flows like thin pudding, it's insanely toxic smoke, and if the mooring lines melt, it's going to float away and set fire to something else! Sometimes the only way you can put it out, is to sink it.

@@jerseyshorefireresponse we did an exercise years ago where several of us went into the water in full turnouts and SCBA, off air. It wasn't what I expected at all. In every case our gear trapped enough air so that it provided a measure of buoyancy. We didn't sink like we all thought we would.
