Vasily Smyslov vs Svetozar Gligoric
Bled-Zagreb-Belgrade Candidates (1959), Bled, Zagreb & Belgrade YUG, rd 26, Oct-25

The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)
The players would meet each other four times, twice in Bled and once in both Zagreb and Belgrade. In Bled, the players stayed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, the site of Alexander Alekhine's historic triumph in Bled (1931). 4 Mikhail Tal had just had his appendix removed less than two weeks earlier, but FIDE insisted he make it in time for the tournament. According to Tal, "I was not much troubled by the effects of the operation, apart from in a purely mechanical sense; during a game I did not feel inclined to stroll about ..."5 This information may have come as a surprise to Harry Golombek, who commented after Round 5 that "it is an impressive sight to see him (Tal) get up after he has made what he obviously thinks is a winning move and pace around the table like a man-eating tiger."6 It may also have surprised Bobby Fischer, who complained after his first game with Tal that whenever he "rose from the board ... he'd begin talking to the other Soviet players, and they enjoyed whispering about their or others' positions."7 Pal Benko later revealed that due to his "demanding" job in a US brokerage firm, he "didn't prepare at all" for the event, although he reckoned "I did reasonably well."8 He didn't. After the first cycle Tal, Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian shared the lead.

Old soviet joke: A prisoner in the gulag heard that another world chess championship had been played, but nobody knew the result. When a new load of prisoners arrived he asked one of them if he knew the results. The new prisoner replied: "I lost."

This is best player ever of Balcan i want to see more games of him one of the best 10 players in world
In just a few moves, Gilgoric's rook, knight, queen, and both bishops were all monsters. Whenever I try to get one or two pieces developed, they're always pressured immediately.
Gliga was always the consummate gentleman, he gave an exhibition in my hometown and charmed the crowd. Afterwards we went to dinner and our conversation included fast cars, rock music and just a smattering of Chess. My wife was charmed by his continental flair and said he was so handsome!

Gligorić is the reason I play the KID as black... I bought his book on the origins of the Mar Del Plata Variation from a chess shop about a decade ago, and it transformed the way I play the opening. Still learning new tricks from him now... I'd never seen 4...c5 5. dxc5 Na6 until now, and that's a very clever idea that can appear elsewhere pretty easily. Thank you!

You failed to mention that Gligoric was also a pro football (soccer) player... Multi-talented!
The consolation price of all the great chess player that never became champions are the victories accumulated against the world champs. Another good video . Thanks Agad
You executed this video with great sensitivity and regard for the players. I appreciate how you captured the players sensitivity and regard for the game and for each other. The more I study chess (the game itself and what's around it), the more I think good of Bobby Fischer. When he won tournaments it wasn't just by just a few points. No much help, no real support and he had to comply to absurd caprice, demands and politics. He was able to do mistake like: if you don't properly deal with that "mistake" then you're gonna lose (I have a train to catch lol).
Fun fact for the day, a character in 2001: A Space Odyssey was named for Vasily Smyslov.
This game featured the rare "Knight windmill" as most "windmills" involve a repeating discovered check by a rook protected by a Bishop.

there was a checkmating option for gligoric. instead of that Bishop F5 move, svetazar could just play rook A1 and after smyslov captured it, knight C2, and then if smyslov captured the knight with the rook, the black queen would capture his queen, and after bishop C1, capture the bishop with checkmate. if smyslov did not capture the knight, apture the queen with the knight, and that is a winning position.
Hey agad will u show another Paul Morphy game?I really really find his games very interesting and instructive to watch. :)
