We had grand visions of what van life would be like-unlimited off-grid camping (boondocking), avoiding expensive and touristy campgrounds for picturesque views of National Parks, quick and easy setup, the list goes on. But, with one year of ownership officially under our belts with the 2023 Airstream Interstate 24 GT, it's safe to say our dreams weren't quite what reality had in store.
In this video, we review the last twelve months and break it down (no pun intended) for you. What had ownership of the Interstate van really been like? We'll share write-ups from work orders and details that never made it into our van life videos. We'll also be answering questions like: would we buy the Airstream Interstate again? And the question we're asked almost every day: isn't it a lemon? 🤦‍♀️
Come along with us for this totally unexpected and slightly insane review of the first year of ownership of our Airstream Interstate 24 GT.

@mscarlarn, thank you. We promise we're normal humans. We've had plenty of very perturbed conversations between the two of us about how lame this whole thing is. But, at the end of the day, it's a vehicle. No one's health is in jeopardy, and things can be replaced (even if it takes longer than it should). We have a lot we're thankful for, which keeps us balanced. ❤

We ordered our 2024 Airstream Interstate 24GT with E1 package shortly after your first video dropped. We took our first trip in it back in September of 2022. So far, we have logged about 6K miles on it. If we describe your experience as an earthquake, ours are only minor aftershocks! We have had trouble with blinds, the bathroom light, leveling jacks, parking brake, a window, exterior trim, and E1 package. Only about 3 weeks in the repair shop total. You ask about boondocking. We have only spent 1 night at a campsite (first night), the rest of our time has been fully on E1 power. However, we always drive about 2 hours every day which fully recharges the system. If you don’t need AC, and cook with something other than the induction top, though, I think 7-10 days would be do-able for fans, lights, and fridge. Like you, we’ve been chronicling some of our stuff on the KZread channel (@SunnyApproach) and are working on our own ‘real story’ update. Hope to drop it in about 2 weeks. Best wishes for health and happiness while you wait for the return of your unit.

U have done nothing wrong. But I think I would of been taking it right to the airstream factory service center. Jackson centre Ohio. Did u ever consider doing this? It isnt too late? I would. I’m so sorry for all you guys have gone through. I honestly can’t believe the dealership isn’t willing to just take it back from you at this point without a big hassle. I would think they would be willing to work out something with all that you’ve gone through. I’ll be honest it’s made me not want to purchase from them. You very already bought one from them and with EVERYTHING you have gone through it’s just the right thing to do. You guys are extremely calm about it compared to what most people would be at this point I think. I have heard a lot of people say since Covid things went way down hill for airstream! Congratulations on the baby, I’m so excited for you. Good things will come your way that’s for sure.

After almost two years of ownership we took it to get fixed, yet again, and while we were in the dealership we saw the Winnebago Solis Pocket. Signed the paperwork that day and p/u a week later. So a simple van. Way more storage and way less complications. Hope y’all get a lemon law refund. You certainly deserve it.

@Wanderlocal I am still a subscriber. This was indeed what I was hoping for. My only reaction is that I'm surprised that, given the level of positive coverage that you provided for them (if for no other reason), that they'd do more for you than simply keep the van for long periods of time fixing warranty issues. I guess my question that remains unanswered is... "Would you ever buy another Airstream if your family wasn't outgrowing it?" I think that I'd be reticent. Pasted from the Community Thread section.

At this point, I don’t think we would. Our faith in the brand is tarnished. We love the idea of van life - even if we’re a family of four - and are still going to take trips in it while we have it, but we don’t feel confident it would serve us on our boondocking journeys. The Classic, on the other hand, works well when boondocking. No lithium at all, we just brought along a couple of generators and we were set. The goal of the van was to not have to go to campgrounds and not use generators. Massive battery bank, but if it’s only going to last a day or two “techs words not ours”, then we feel we were oversold. I mean , it was completely losing its charged while parked for a few days. It’s possible it’s fixed now. We shall see. We know of others with this same coach, but they make sure to drive every single day to recharge the batteries. I mean, what if you just wanted to park for a few days?! So crazy. :)

@@Wanderlocal Me again. I know that this video is moving into history, but I wanted to reply one more time. As I mentioned, I have a class C and it has solar. I have 4 100 Watt panels with 4 100 AH batteries under my bed. That was the maximum that could be put on the roof and under the bed. I use the Class C to drive back and forth between FL (Tampa) and KS. My wife has lived there for 4 years taking care of her 92 year old mother. We have a rental house business in Tampa. I have to tend to. Anyway, the solar system that I have is good for about 5 hours of AC. I can do longer periods of time (2-3 days) with just fans. I have space heaters that I can run, but they drain the batteries a little slower than the AC, but not much. The Class C does also have a propane furnace. My Class C does have a generator so if I get into a boondocking situation on my trip, which happens occasionally, I can run the generator if the solar is not sufficient. My class C roof is a little larger than your van so a little more solar, but the battery bank is probably equivalent to your van. The size of my battery bank is the limiting factor in my system as I spend a lot of any day that I don't have to maintain temperature (AC or Heater) throwing away solar power because my batteries will fill up earlier than the end of the day. Your panels and battery are probably better balanced, but your lack of power for boondocking is probably due to the batteries being too small. I can tell you've been looking at 5th wheels and with your growing family, you need more space. That also means you'll have more roof space. And more possibility for solar panels. I think I've suggested this before, but , if I were you, I'd look into a large 5th wheel with a Heavy Duty Truck (HDT). Check out Big Truck Big Travels or Suite Travels on KZread. They routiinely boondock for many days in a row because they each of something close to 10 solar panels on the large roof of their 5th wheels. Big Truck Big Travels really does more boondocking discussion, but Suite Travels has a toy hauler 5th wheel with a side-b-side Can Am. Perhaps that would scratch your itch for getting away to the middle of nowhere.? The couple on Big Truck Big Travels also have a Super C that they've traveled in and that could be an option for you guys. Anyway. My two cents. Dale Engle Tampa, FL / Emporia, KS

Wow, this just completely breaks my heart that someone who buys a nearly $300,000 RV has basically used it less than a month and 12 months of ownership. How sad is that. Airstream should definitely buy back this lemon airstream. This is not exactly the PR that needs to be getting out there for airstream top of the line touring van at least they have a sense of humor about their experience. But sadly, they are not the only ones to experience this nightmare with recreational vehicles.

People believe Airstream to be THE best quality available. I loved my 23FB before my foot went through the floor. The shell’s are wonderful, but do occasionally leak. What you need to know is Airstream, like every company, milks every drop of profit they can from them. Few upgraded parts, not a dime spent on anything you can’t see. Their goal is to build the thing to last 2 years, then they are safe. The number of times a dealer said, you don’t want Airstream blinds, these are better, instead of that winch, we suggest this one, this TV, or this water pump, this whatever is better than what it came with.

Thank you! FINALLY a dirt honest review of the AI . And believe me your problems are relatable to many pre 2020 builds too. I bought mine new in 2018 and it spent part of every other month of the first year in the service department. The problem is there are very few people who have EXTENSIVE training & experience with the electrical systems . It’s been reliable since that first year -now owned mine for 6 + years -but am considering scaling down to a lower maintenance trailer . I can roll my own shades up and I’ll take a typical AM/FM radio system please:) I hope you use the lemon law. RV industry customer service will not change until we stop letting them off the hook.

Having camped in several National Parks (Yellowstone, Mount Lassen) last year with our 25’ Airstream, the van would be just terrible for us. You would be left without transportation to explore places and, even if you were willing to break down camp everyday, it’s too big to park at trailheads and other points of interest. And then Dash sitting in the back in non-NHTSA-tested seating surrounded by cabinets full of dangerous items (in a crash) would have been a complete non-starter for us. I never understood the choice but we realize that everyone’s needs are different.

First …. Thanks to your videos on the van, we bought a Grech Strada Tour Ion instead of the E1 Interstate. When looking side by side, it is clearly the better built product. And we too have an Airstream Classic that we love. I am curious to the exact problem with the latest Timberline issue. Finally, while it looks like you had some real problems with the lithium house batteries, it would be nice to know the remedy you found for the chassis battery side. The big electric door, fobs & starting where Mercedes related & not Airstream. We’ve been advised to carefully mind the chassis battery as it will drain dead quickly when operating the sliding door & other parasitic drag when dry camping. We have a battery tender we use specifically for this if overnight for a couple days. The Mercedes side is quirky for the vanlife use case but you figure the weak points out. I hate the parking/collision assist & routinely deactivate when beeping (& I’m safely clear of obstacles). As for the auto levelers … thankfully not an option for us! It was a love/hate relationship we had with a Class A DP years ago.

Also having an awning issue might sound trivial but the alarm goes off while driving if you hit a bump and even if you don’t. Then someone has to unbuckle get out of their seat to override which is very unsafe and this will happen after each stop. Very unsafe. And this has been since we left the lot at purchase. They were closing. We thought we must be doing something wrong. But nope. That’s the quality of the airstream. And the multiple fixes. I asked for a new asking nope. They will keep fixing. We were charged over 1k for the prep of the van at purchase. When I questioned, they explained they make sure everting is working etc. They obviously did NOT. So if you ever are crazy enough to buy an Airstream make sure you test drive before you sign. Who would have thought it would alarm out and they must have known. Sorry but have yo vent Airstream is not listening or giving. Poor poor quality.

I wish i could say this all an Airstream problem. I have used some of the dealers mentioned. I can safely say they almost 100% of the dealers do more harm than good. I bought a new AS TT 2 yrs ago and will not bring it to a AS dealer. Because as you found @ $185+/hr. Nothing gets fixed, and im out the cost of hotels etc.. each AS is owned independent of AS. However, AS needs to do like the Clash sang about The Clamp down on the deales lack of quality and shady business dealing. A big shout ou to AS customer service who have answered every question correctly and sent me parts to fix all warranty claims myself. NOTE TO: AIRSTREAM TIME TO ALLOW INDEPENDENT RELIABLE RV TECHS TO GET PAID TO DO WARRANTY WORK. YOU STARTED A PILOT NOW MAKE IT SO. This will challenge the dealers and make their hourly rates competitive. TDLR apologies, but AS dealers just suck is the short title

they cant swap them a new car because it is a lemon, otherwise, they cant justify to other customers for not swapping theirs. As you cant define a "lemon": how many major issues would have to occur to make it a lemon? What issue is considered a "major" issue? Who is responsible for the buyback? MB or Airstream? What if all the lemon problem is caused by MB? So Airstream has to embrace a PR problem rather than a total supply chain disaster.

I wanted this Airstream 😐it’s like your van is possessed. Just kidding but I’ve had numerous problems with my Town and Country Chrysler mini van that is loaded with every option. It gets computer problems. Drives me crazy. There is just me and my husband plus a Frenchie.its just the perfect size and something I can drive.

This is a definite buyback situation! There is absolutely no way a van like this should ever have this many problems in a 20 year situation much less within the first few months!!! Inexcusable , so sorry !

Even at the one year mark, after tons of negative experiences with this van, you remain almost neutral. You are better people than I am. Airstream should have bought the van back from you. We, too, love our Airstream Classic. We highly recommend the pre-pandemic models.

Forget Airstream , buy a Panoramic made in Canada. Much better quality , sorry to say . We do own an Airstream 😢

All the best for the future, i can't wait to meet baby number 2. And all the best with the nightmare of a van that you have. Personally, i think they should refund you both for the van and every expense since.
