@@richardholladay4165 I have watched the Royal Marines bands many times and many different years. They are most certainly impressive. They look great, and sound great too. But they are all about the crowd listening with their eyes. That is why their percussion leads them. I love watching them too. HOWEVER----- The US Marine Corps Bands are much more subdued. They concentrate on precision, intonation and the sound the band has as a whole unit. The idea being that you will be hard pressed to hear a Marine Band on the street playing loud over the crowd. Often times they only field 25 to 30 Marines of their TO. So by concentrating on intonation, everyone gets on the same frequency and that alone, by itself, is enough to carry the sound far and wide. Yes the Marine bands put a lot of work into looking good. When I was at Pendleton some 30 odd years ago, we put in 10 to 15 hours of just practicing marching every week. I would be willing to bet every unit except the Peesident's Own puts in that kind of time. On a 4.0 scale, the members of the President's Own, on average, play on a 3.5 to 3.8 scale. Your average field band is between a 2.8 and 3.4 . It varies so widely because of the age and rank of the musicians. So a staff sergeant is expected to play on a 3.1 level consistantly. One needs to graduate with a 2.7 as a lance corporal and the requirement goes up .1 point for every rank. But US Marine Bands are getting more creative and putting on some fantastic shows. One of my favorites is: look up US Marine Band scottish festival 2006. It should come up. It is only 25 minutes but you will be amazed. And yes, as full of pop and swagger as the Royal Marines Bands are, you will see why our Marine Bands are the top of all military bands.

You're not paying attention Arden. The 2 up front are carrying a banner proudly proclaiming that the 5th regiment is adopted by the city of Dana Point (Ca.), which is close to Camp Pendleton where the 5th is headquartered. They are obviously not part of the military formation and are not marching. Their job is to carry the banner which apparently belongs to the city. Only a real dope would not have been able to figure that out. Now I have a question for you. Were you born stupid or have you been working at it all your life? Just wondering.

Meh. An elite fighting force should have an elite band. This is just adequate - nothing more. If you are going to have such small numbers you'd best have great musicians who can project well while also achieving impressive blend, balance, and intonation. The drums are playing like they are in a band 5x the size of this one.
