It really does bring a tear to my eye that as an Australian, the 1st Marine Division's Battle Hymn is Waltzing Matilda. Great Work guys!

Given the way the Corps was treated in Aussieland in WW 2, how could a Marine band NOT go Waltzing Matilda, mate ? The only non US Marines I want by my side in a scrap would be a Samoan Marine, a Royal Marine, ROK Marine, and any damned Digger that felt like showing up !

+Victor Bozic Now in the Australian Defence Force, there is a little saying being spread today: "A Marine has 2 homes. One in the 'States And his favourite in Australia" They say this because there is 2100 Marines stationed in the city of Darwin along with our own Regiments.

It was a mutual love affair for the guys who left their homes in the U.S. to fight with and for the Aussies. On George Washington's birthday, Feb. 22, 1943, the Marines marched a parade through Melbourne. During this parade, the 1st Marine Division Band decided to play the Australian folk favorite, Waltzing Matilda.

+corpsetime It's actually the official battle hymn of the US 1st Marine Divison! After the Battle of Guadalcanal in WWII, the unit was sent to Australia for rest and refit. There, for for the first time in four months the division band was able to play music again; touring Australia and being welcomed as "Australia's Own." The unit was so impressed with their treatment in Australia they adopted Waltzing Matilda as their battle hymn, and still ship out to that song today. We love our upside-down brothers very much here in the states; Aussies and Kiwis have been with us in the middle east since the first Gulf War.

bpsanon the battle of hamel was also the first time americans have served under foreign command (australian). Hamel was also considered the birthplace of modern warfare. the two countries have been fighting together ever since

Aye - I was on the first R&R flight to Sydney in '67, and the treatment we Marines got was royal. God Bless OZ!

My Dad was in the 1st Marine Div during WWII specifically the 11th Marines, the artillery battalion, and when he retired, he did so as the Sgt. Major of that same battalion! His favorite tune was Waltzing Matilda, but he never said why, and now I know.

Jim … When the 1st Marine Division finished the job on Guadalcanal, they went to Australia for R&R. The Australians knew very well what the 1stMarDiv had done to stop the Japanese Pacific advance dead in its tracks; had the Japanese defeated the Marines, their next target would have been the invasion of Australia. Small wonder then that the Australians greeted the Marines like the conquerers they were .… small wonder, what with the open armed greetings they received, that the 1stMarDiv adopted Waltzin’ Matilda as their battle hymn. To this day, whenever 1st Division Marines are shipped out, they do so to this tune. And by the way, the 11th Marines are a regiment, not a battalion. So if your Dad was the SgtMaj of the 11th Marines, he was the top enlisted man in a unit three times larger than a battalion.

You're right about my mistake, my Dad would have preferred the job in the battalion but on the other hand he couldn't hide how he reacted every time he walked into the Regimental office and every man in the office had to "pop" to attention, including the officers below Major, but that was then, and this is now, I doubt if that is still the way the Corps treats their Sgt's Major. Also this was way back in 1958-1960.

My father joined in 1938, and was transferred to Gitmo to an artillery school there, in June of '41, transferred from the USS Oklahoma, talk about a "just in time" transfer. On the Oklahoma, he was a Brig chaser having been demoted from the Captains' Orderly when he want over the hill with two other Marines, hoping to miss the ships movement and turned themselves in at NAS Pensacola. The Captain had them "shipped" back to the Oklahoma which was in Bremington WA via 1st class rail. Back then before the CO would transfer you, your relief had to be on-board and fully trained, they were just trying to short-circuit the system, which did not work.

***** I may have to disagree, the Korean War Marines did a fine job also.Before my time .Remember Chosin Reservoir.....We didn't do too bad at Khe Sanh,etc. either.

I heard Waltzing Matilda many many times when I was in the 1st Mar Div at Camp Pendleton. They play it right after the U.S. national anthem every day. My first platoon sergeant made us all learn the words. It wound up being our favorite drinking song. The Division insignia is based on the flag of Victoria. That, along with the song, were adopted during the WW2 when the Division was based in Victoria.

It is the story of a hobo who steels a sheep by a waterhole to have for a meal and the property owner and the police try to catch him, but he dives into the waterhole and dies. But his ghost lives on.

US Marines, especially the 1st Marines are always welcome in Australia.

Idk why but them just marching and moving in unison to Waltzing Matilda is so satisfying.

Great to hear Waltzing Matilda as well as the Sousa standards. Semper Fi to the First Marines, and the Southern Cross that they share with Australia, remembering the dark days of WWII

Absolutely love it. Australia will always be thankful for the vital help that the US gave us in WW2, when the Japanese air force and navy were literally attacking our cities. Forever grateful.

The Marine Hymn is always chilling to hear. Never gets old.

It's exactly 61years ago when I took of wore my dress blues for the last time. When I see this I'm to go again ! Semper Fi !

I really apprecaiate the videos posted on you tube--I was supposed to audition for the USAF band in 1968---it did not happen. I studied percussion for a long time and I wanted to play professionally---but that did not happen--after the service I became a firefighter. NOW ON YOU TUBE--I can enjoy the BEST BANDS and their music . THANK YOU

If any person is curious our oldest son joined the Marines after 9-11-01 and wanted to get the terrorists. 13 days after the attack on America, he was on the bus that takes them to Parris Island. Talk about patriotic!! and, after completing boot camp, and the crucible, he now became a part of the United States Of America Marine.Corps. Graduation was on his i birthday, which was December 21st. Yesterday was his birthday. very very proud mom as you can tell! our youngest son ( we only have 2 children) was old enough for boot camp in 2006, and wow...truly, a patriot of our American he was. he also survived boot camp and the crucible right on schedule! For anyone who doesn't remember, At that time in history, the terrorists were brutally murdering our people by cutting off their heads. Talk about being brave. Both sons knew that we were at war, and knew that they would be deployed. We say Thank you to ALL of our brave people who currently are serving our country, and Thank you to ALL who served in our military. You have a special part in my heart for all of those who honor "Land of the free, and the home of the brave". Everyone should thank the men and the women for all that you are doing to preserve our freedom. It's a very warm thank you!

I like how they modified the Marines' Hymn arrangement to include a hint of Semper Fidelis.

Most in discussions of the Pacific War, never give the Aussies Coast Watchers their due, then New Guinea, the Japanese didn't take Port Moresby in no small part due to the Aussies, combined with the Coral Sea, it's where Japan lost World War II. Japan could have sued for peace then and outside of leaving a few places stay intact. Nope, a month later Midway would put the Nail in the coffin. It would end in Tokyo Harbor in another 3 years and then some. It's a contribution way out of proportion to the countries size and population at the time. Waltzing Matilda is just a great song!

I was a military musician. The longest parade I ever marched in was 14 miles, Great Falls Montana, Frontier Days, 1970. The Sousaphone weighed 44 pounds. I was 19 and had a hangover.

"Tis hardly my place to comment, tho' I'm the grandson of an ANZAC and a nephew of a 2NZEF Veteran (thus:also ANZAC): But: for Posterity I record this: Our American Cousins {2nd Marines Divn. USMC} wanted "a Song" that both showed the spirit of the Aussies and Kiwis regarding both their Homelands and Traditions (whilst they were busy fortifiying various geographical features of both NZ and Australia)...: "Waltzing Matilda" became that same Song. Ever-after; that same Song has remained an unspoken 'Bond' between the USMC Dvn1 and USMC Dvn2 and the WW2 ANZACS, among whom I have various relatives, just as I have various relatives among the OKH. Kind and Respectful Regards, ^Uyraell^, NZ.

I was trained by a joint command, Army Air Force and Marines. What I hate about the Marines is all the Brag that seems to come with the Marines... It's only some Marines... but they make up in volume what they lack in numbers. There was 150 years of military history plus. in the what would become the United States before the Marines showed up. I know a number of fine Marines but I hate the Brag.

j wenum I checked a couple of days ago, Presley Neville O’Bannon (1776 - September 12, 1850.. who led the US Marines "To The Shores Of Tripoli" married Matilda Morgan when he retired to Lincoln Ct Kentucky. She's a 2nd cousin of mine and the daughter of General Daniel Morgan a 1st cousin of mine Who I suspect hardkly kn ew how to march but he was as good as any American Soldier Ever.... I have nothing but respect for the Marines as a fighting unit...yet when any Marines... screams how good he is in the company of fighting men... I always look away...Over the centuries my people have been Rangers,Naval and Army Officers.. have fought some of the bloodiest actions in American history.. Can't we keep the chest pounding down a bit... a Marine Major got in me trouble once as I bought some insignia from hims and and wore it improperly..My mistake for trusting him. . There are all types of Marines.. Personally, I think the best fighting men were either the Maryland Line or the Confederate Infantry...A, Marine Lt, friend of mine noted that there is more than their share of Southern men in the Marines... Captain John Thomason who wrote "Fix Bayonets" and was reputed to be the longest serving Marine Captain in history has written some very good stories... Was himself a proud descedant of a Southern Officer. He said that he never heard the term Yankee, it was always dammyank. The Marines are a hell of a lot larger as a unit, than they once were... As I was staff, in Korea, (Freedoms Frontier) I have always like officers who lead by example rather than volume of their orders or how big the brag.. I know that its a big deal in some units to put on the show and brag... but sometimes....pick up your rifle and follow me...

The name of the song is “Semper Fidelis," the official march of the Marine Corps. Not to be confused with The Marines’ Hymn.

"Battle Cry of Freedom" at 06.20 is simply awesome. Excuse me, so is 'The Band'..But I'm prejudiced.

'Follow that', as they say! Great stuff. I have a question: what's with the huge rush at the end - Buds handing out free beers or something?

That's a normal size band, composite is three or four of these bands combined

Pop was in the Korean War, but from '52 to '53 or '54, I don't recall when as I was a wee tyke, anyway at the time he was the "operations officer" for the 11th Marines, as it seems the near destruction of the Marine Corps post WWII and with the blessings of Truman, there weren't enough officers in the Division. Or so I was told much later listening to the "war stories" of Korea during pinochle games that would last long into the night and early mornings.

Sid as you know since world war 11 where narines trained in Australia the corp has fely with the Wallabys

1st Mar div from guadal canal to Korea to Panama to Australia to Kuwait to Iraq to Afghanistan and more brothers in arms

Don't forget Vietnam! I was in the Fifth Marine Division in Vietnam (Kilo/4/13 and W/1/13), which was used as reinforcements for the First and the Third Marine Divisions and was attached to both the First and the Third at various times during my tour, '68-'69.
