    That must be the case with the 16700. All the 16710 U serials that I've seen - aside from the one in this very video - have been Swiss only dials, so they must have incorporated luminova a bit earlier in the GMT Master 2.

  • @watchsymposium

    @watchsymposium

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question, because it's certainly a defect. But it's the defects and anomalies that are what makes these pieces special. I can certainly understand the argument against paying 20 grand for something with a cracked dial, but I also understand the rarity factor that's at play.

    Question for you Austin: I don't recall if I heard from one of your videos, but is it true that there are so many "newer" model watches available in Japan because the Japanese typically desire to own newer/new luxury goods and thus buy and sell after a short period of ownership? Also, is it generally accepted that the Japanese take very good care of their watches and thus present great buying opportunities for used pieces regarding condition? Many thanks.

  • @watchsymposium

    @watchsymposium

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's a great place to buy because the examples are great and so is the selection. Prices can be a bit high, though. "is it true that there are so many "newer" model watches available in Japan because the Japanese typically desire to own newer/new luxury goods and thus buy and sell after a short period of ownership?" On the whole, yes, but I'm not sure that it applies to Rolex and other collectible vintage watches because of their desirability.

    Funny to see the crazy inventory, it makes me drool but also reminds me why the prices got inflated to begin with. All the grey market dealers buying up inventory, a lot of ad's selling under the table to them at a markup instead of to regular customers or people just buying and selling the them for the cash. Now lets see how long they stay in business sitting on over priced inventory.

  • @watchsymposium

    Some people think it will be in in the future. At the moment the Mark 1 sells for less here in Japan, though that might be just because they are the older ones. In 20 years, finding a Mark 1 might be a really special thing, and command a premium. The only catch is that they are kind of hard to ID if you don't have a Mark 2/3 next to it. I'm kind of surprised dealers here haven't tried to put a slight premium on the Mark 1 to try and milk the speculators.

    Good stuff Austin they have some kit out your way you just wouldn’t see in London. That 1960 1675 with the gloss dial is a bit dubious mind - they were gilt ‘swiss’ radium dial with a chapter ring right up until the end of 1960 but there may have been a few unused dials - if anyone is getting into these high priced gilt watches or any high value up to 1974 always if you can get the case back taken off and the 3 monthly or quarterly date is there in Roman numerals eg IV 64 is Oct-Dec 1964 (forth quarter is also incorrectly stamped VI sometimes - that’s fine too !) I would only buy this 1675 if it was fourth quarter 196O therefore for reason above...any later and I think it would a dial swap...Lovely watch though. Ps RIP Honor Blackman the original 6542 Gmt poster girl. Been wearing mine as a salute!

    Ps meaning that it would have to one of the very first non radium dial watches ever hence could only really have be fitted at factory at the end of the 1960 - and yes the best 5 digit investment (to buy now)is a tritium 1988-1999 lug hole Sea Dweller 16600 they are currently £6k will be £10k in 5 yrs!

    I appreciate that, Paul, and thanks for the insight. As your comment illustrates, buying vintage is fraught with risk and you really have to know what you're doing. I can't ever see myself traversing that minefield. But I do loving seeing those vintage pieces - a trip to Nakano is a bit like heading to a horological museum.

    🥴bet you will though albeit in a few years - the entry drug is a 16750 (non Wg surround) matte or a similar 16800 matte dial and then a bit of your 16570/14060/16610/16710 love will leave you and your hooked....then looking for a 5513/1680 Matte dial and px’ing/selling a 5 digit. True though knowledge is power in vintage ‘ Malcolm Gladwells 10,000 hours’ is never truer than in watch collecting/investing, though I think Archie misread it as 10 hrs 😮

    @@watchsymposium That would be a v good call for a first plexi/matte dial watch - ps thought your DJ 1601 anology was funny (and a bit weird) in equal measure 😏.... if your viewers are looking for gilt edged vintage investment 1601/1603 (c $4-8k) the two to go for are the unique hand painted 70s/80s Roman numeral AKA Buckley dials (doubled in value in 5 yrs), or if they have a few quid more the 80s 16030 'boiler gauge' dialed watch doubled also in 5 yrs.

    I think you already know what we're going to say which is why you are asking for critical comments. I didn't enjoy the inserted audio comments of Paul Pluta. He's not anyone you should be relating to these days. He needs to sort his s#it out first. Otherwise a great video.
