1999 U.S. Open Highlights
Спорт
The final round at Pinehurst No. 2 began with Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Payne Stewart all in contention. Mickelson's presence was magnified by the fact that his wife, Amy, was due to give birth to the couple's first child at any moment. At 18, Stewart faced a 15-foot par putt for the win, which he calmly holed before celebrating with caddie Mike Hicks and giving encouraging advice to the would-be father and runner-up, Mickelson.

Stewart had a graceful swing and was a genuine guy. He was competitive, yet nice to others. He left us too soon. Fate is something we all have to live with. RIP Mr. Stewart. ⛳ golf is the greatest of all sports !!
I was there. I can't believe it has been 25 years. This June will mark the 25th anniversary of this great tournament back in Pinehurst. Rest peacefully, Payne Stewart.
One of the greatest US Opens of all time.

Id say the greatest. But I was 15 and hooked on golf and Payne was my favorite...not favorite he was like a golf father 😢 to me 😢not kidding. Miss him so much
I love watching this over again i still miss payne
The interaction between the two on 18 I will never forget. Rest in Peace Payne
IMHO Payne Stewart has the most elegant and timeless swing of all time. Given the technology in modern golf clubs, I'm sure he's able to match most current top tour pros with less effort and strain. R.I.P. Payne Stewart... You're a legendary golfer and a caring husband and father too 🏆
I was 21 and lost my dad a month before this. Payne was so gracious and such a gentleman to Phil. Two of my all time favorites. Best major for me
One of the greatest championships ever conducted. A great venue, some of the best players in the game were in contention, and a great champion. This was awesome.
One of the most memorable reaction
He was my favorite golfer. He would have won at least 4 or 5 more majors.....

@sapper made Doubtful. He died when he was 42 and would have been playing right during the peak of Tiger’s career.

@@Whoopdido777 I think Payne might have snuck one more during Tiger's peak. 2001 would have been his best chance at Southern Hills given his playing style.

The 20th season since his passing. Gone far too soon. I may cry when the US Open gets going this year, because he will be all I will think about.
Still gives me goosebumps
Met stewart at The Open a few times. What a gent, what a player. For me his swing is in the top 3 of all time.
I remember this tournament well....watching Payne cut the sleeves off his rain jacket....those putts....and such a gracious, sweet guy. I truly miss seeing him play.
RIP Payne Stewart (1957-1999) A victim onboard a Learjet 35 which crashed in Mina, Edmunds County, near Aberdeen, South Dakota due to crew incapacitation and loss of cabin pressure.
Two fan favorites! Father’s Day finish! And Payne’s last putt! And Payne congratulating Phil and reassuring him. (Lord, please help Mickelson win a US Open before he retires, please?) And to think Tiger Woods was an afterthought. What a tournament!
Still the last US Open to have a winning putt from the final group on the 72nd hole. Payne gave us the best story possible and for that we are all eternally grateful. ❤🙏💗💗
Drive for show, putt for dough...one of the greatest examples right there!
Class act.
Pause at 2:45 right after he nails that putt. That pose is the statue you see at Pinehurst. Legendary
Your gonna be a father! Class all the way

It's been easy to forget how great Payne Stewart was. He set his own style but never flaunted it. Remember the NFL team looks? Sad day when that Learjet lost pressure.

@C. Buck Hyres He may or may not have still ended up on the same aircraft. Worst part is that they couldn't determine the real cause of the bleed valve opening up, which caused the cabin depressurization.
That torn at the sleeves rain jacket has to be in the Golf Hall of Fame

Can only imagine the the scores today on those conditions
Just one bad mo fo...straight killer...what a golf swing, sweet Jesus
Remember this. Epic. RIP
I was putting and chipping at age 15 in the backyard when my family told me of the news that my favorite play died in a crash. Imagine the tears i cried...it would flood the Mississippi river twice 😭😭😭
Payne had such nice tempo
Only the good die young. That gives me peace of mind. :)
That putt he made on 16 was monster huge
Sweet and very sad, all at once.

4 months before Stewart was killed in the plane crash. Just awful. It makes these highlights bittersweet as hell.

And in between at the Ryder Cup, Payne made one of the most gracious moves conceding Montgomery's last putt because the crowd at Brookline was jeering him so badly. I still see Monty clapping, not at the crowd, but just at Payne for his gracious act.

The closest we have is Rickie (color wise) and Bryson (clothes wise).
Pretty crazy that somewhat lost in this duel (at least in terms of golf history) is that Tiger was right there at the end too. Had his putt dropped, and it looked like it almost did, and Payne missed his, then it would have been a 3 way playoff between Tiger, Phil and Payne. Also Tiger was E after 16, tied with both Payne and Phil for the lead, but Tiger bogeyed 17, while Payne birdied to go to -1. Phil parred. They still all had a chance to tie on 18. Unless something really bad happened the only one who had a chance to win outright was Payne.
When you tee off at 4:00 then have to catch the French Revolution at 5:00
If you think about it Phil pulled all of his last 3 putts
I love the part where Phil Dickelson loses.
1:45. Tiger should have pulled a happy Gilmore. "ARE YOU TO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?"
Why doesn't anyone sport the knickers anymore. So styley.
I miss Payne. So unfair what happened to him
Tiger still the GOAT.
Losing Payne Stewart was not only a loss to world of golf but the sporting world.
The computer is us you won just talk relic type
Congratulations aviation, you killed a fan favorite. RIP Payne Stewart.
He die
Should Mickelson really have played in this tournament? He said at the start of the week that if his heavily pregnant wife went into labour ""I'm gonna hightail it straight outta here". What if he'd got that call halfway through the final round? Would he have left the course? Or if Stewart had missed that putt at 18, would he have contested the play-off? (she gave birth on the Monday).

Maybe Payne ends up winning the tournament regardless. If they went to a playoff Phil would have to withdraw

@MrAJR76 Hd did he would leave if she went into labor, but he’d have to use a little common sense. If he was on the 5th hole...ok I can see him leaving. If he just hit his tee shot on 17, I can’t imagine he would have walked off the course.
