Actually this was intentional back then. The start signal was sent via radio, so over the past few races some teams picked up the signal, reverse engineered the seemingly random time the red lights stay on and play a beep to the driver a few milliseconds before the lights went out, essentially giving the drivers a perfect reaction time. The FIA picked up on this and in the 1999 EU GP they sent a radio signal that intentionally signaled an earlier lights out than what was actually going to happen. This way they caught all teams are were catching the radio signal.

Out of all of his commentary, this has to have some of the best Murray Walker commentary in a F1 race. Honestly, we cannot get enough of Magical Murray. Hakkinen did not deserve the title that year. He threw away so many races. Frentzen drove out of his skin in that Jordan which was undoubtedly the 3rd fastest car on the grid. Schumacher probably would’ve walked the title if it wasn’t for his broken leg. Frentzen deserves the 99 title imo
