1998: The year of DMX

1998 is regarded as one of if not the greatest years in rap history. A lot of great albums came out this year and many of our favorite artists were at the top of their game during this time. DMX would emerge on the scene with a legendary year of his own releasing 2 number 1 albums that went on to be multi-platinum.

People forget how dominate DMX was. First man to achieve so many amazing feats in not just Hip-Hop but Music in general. Debuted at number ONE FIVE TIMES! The man launched Ruff Ryders into the stratosphere. He made crowds cry at the time they were jumping. He was one of the only rappers at the time who was unapologetically emotional and opened up the possibility of mainstream Rap being charged by emotions other than hate. This man shat on everybody who ever featured him. He will forever be in my Top 10. R.I.P. DMX, truly one of Hip-Hops crown jewels.

1998 is a top 5 year for 90's hip hop. So many great and amazing albums from each corner of the game. You got DMX, OutKast, Black Star, Juvenile, Busta Rhymes, DJ Quik, Big Pun, Master P, Gang Starr, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, etc. And even the less talked about (and underappreciated these days) albums like from E-40, Nate Dogg (there's technicalities but I still count it as '98), Hiero and Goodie Mob were great too! So considering all of that its even more crazy to me that DMX dominated the way he did. Great video btw 👍 DMX is a legend, man, even if I wasn't alive during his commercial peaks I became a fan later and I was sad when he passed away, R.I.P. 🙏

All the revisionist history and rumors from people who were not even alive at that time or had no connections to people in those circles...Irv Gotti was the A& R plug, like you said ...he was the one who negioated the deals for Roc A Fella and Ruff Ryders...he also moonlighted as DMX's DJ after he got the shine on LL Cool J's and the LOX's albums...and Ja Rule , Irv's protege was his hypeman...Jay Z did not have the leverage at Def Jam to make any decisions...that came later after In My Lifetime Vol II : Hard Knock Life sold 4 million copies...and he had songs on damn near every movie soundtrack...from Blue Streak to Nutty Professor...lighting up the charts...in fact, Dee & Waah Dean from Ruff Ryders, Damon Dash , Jay Z, & Kareem Biggs of Roc A Fella made a pact with Irv Gotti to help each other out as much as they could...which is why you heard DMX on a couple of Jay Z songs and vice versa...plus they both looked out for Ja Rule...they almost put out a album with the three of them being known as " The Murderers" but originally, they were supposed to be called " Murder, Inc"...in fact, if you listen to the song " Murdergram"...that is the first time you hear that name dropped but Irv Gotti decided to use that as the name of his label after Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles who were calling the shots at Def Jam during that time...rewarded Irv Gotti for masterminding not only their success but Foxxy Brown's , too...not enough credit is given to Dee & Waah of Ruff Ryders because DMX had lost a deal in 1992 and when they became his managers, they made sure he was networking with the right people and when DMX brought The LOX to them...they did the same thing and it became a movement...by the time, they got that deal with Def Jam, they had Eve and Drag On in the boot camp, preparing them to be on songs with the LOX and DMX for that Ruff Ryders " Ryde Or Die " Vol I album!
