People were sharing mp3s heavily all the way back in 1997, 2 years before Napster. The music industry knew about it but was late to respond. CD burners got cheaper in 1999-2000 and a lot more people became interested in the internet then. The industry spent too much time ignoring it, then fighting it, instead of embracing it.

I didn't realise how many people were eating off of DMX and he never really complained about it. It's insane. Rough riders could not sustain itself without the DMX hits yet DMX had so little leverage. It's almost as if it benefited them that he was on drugs and disinterested in the business side of things most of the times. I think that there is a lot to come out about all of this. You can see that DMX feels a way about it but his loyalty won't let him air it out.

The artist usually feed the entire team . DMX was a giver . Big heart ... pure soul # save the street of hiphop and paid the way for many . In the flesh he didn’t get his flowers from the folks he really wanted them from . He saved many with his poems and prayers . DMX was here for a special purpose to spreed the word of GOD . This is why he was different & humble . Will give the shirt of him back . The realest ... no be can take his likes . 🙏🙏🌻

My buddy was in deep with them, and one time I was going to a meet up and these three guys tried to run up on me cuz they said I cut em off. I never realized that until I read your post. I didn't believe you so I did some research. You're absolutely correct, outside of platinum selling or artists who have been around for decades, there are very few who make a dime off the actual sales of the album. I always assumed that the royalties, which are between 10-20% on average, were pocketed by the artist. Hell, that's not even close to being true. Before you even start looking at the numbers you have to acknowledge that the 10-20 percentage isn't calculated based on the price a consumer paid for a record, but the price the label sold each unit for to the vendor, which is less than half of retail price. Once that amount is calculated, the label usually takes anywhere between 15-25% of the total royalties for packaging and shipping of the record. After that's taken, recoupable costs are taken. These often include promotional costs, production costs, video costs, payment to any backup musicians or backup singers used during production, money needed to shoot a music video, and quite a bit of tour and travel costs.

Here in Europe, there's a channel called Eurosport and they were airing the MotoGp that was having a grand prix in Austria. When the race was finished they showed a highlight reel of the weekend. Usually this highlight reel has a random song, but that weekend a near freak accident happened, it was a gritty weekend and when the highlight reel showed up, they were playing this track... The dirty version. We fuccin lost our minds and me my fam were jumping in the air sporadically with our hands in the air singing the chorus in tandem 😂 That's how legendary this song is.
