1998 Ford Ranger Rear Differential Reassembly

Reassembly of 1998 Ford Ranger 8.8 Rear Differential. Replacement of rear bearings was required including pinion and carrier bearings. This is an overview of the process. Some steps may not be shown or shown in part. Refer to a shop manual for detailed instructions. I am not a mechanic but I do have a lot of experience with vehicle mechanical work and have had substantial coaching from my brother who is a mechanic.

This is the best run-through of a diff pinion bearing/seal replacement that I've found here on youtube. Bravo!

So the bearings need to be pressed into place...how long did it all take from disassembly up to where you were ready to reassemble thereabouts. Thanks.

The part starting at 5:50 is the most sophisticated, isn't it? That's why my mechanic declines to do the job. Does it only depend on the shims at each side? How many attempts where needed at your axle? Thx for this vid!

You need two step-down adapters - one for 1/2" to 3/8" and then another 3/8" to 1/4"

What did you use to remove the old bearings from the carrier and pinion, then install the new ones? Great video BTW.

yea were there some cups you pressed in for the pinion bearings? and nice job on the alignment with the yellow paint. you had it re machined and thats why you had to re chek it?

i have a loud knocking noise when i drive my mazda b4000 4x4. it has large tires and the 373 limited slip 8.8 rearend. i dismantled the diff and all of the bearings were tight, the pinion was solid and i noticed that when i moved the drive shaft with the tires on the ground the ring gear had signifigant movement as if the axles were worn!. im going to replace them with salvage units. is this common to wear out splines on axles of an 8.8? im a mopar man this is my 2nd ford lol

Thank You Very Much, for the info. I have a 1991 Ford Ranger w/4.0 Engine that I'm planning on putting a 3:73 Ring and Pinion in. The only doubt I have is, how much rpm the motor could take especially when doing anywhere from 55 to 75 mph. I don't know if the motor could handle revving-at-3,000 rpm on the expressway. I would like to hear from anyone who has the 4.0 motor, Automatic Transmission and 3:73 Ring and Pinion Ratio. Like how many miles there Ford Ranger has and what had to be repaired. My motor, the 4.0, is rated at 160 hp at 4,200 rpm and red-lines at just under 5,000 rpm.

Sorry, but I have to say it looks like you did not crush the sleeve. You must get to that point where you crush the sleeve or it won't work. It may be quite for a while but then you will get whine on coast. Gotta crush the sleeve.
