The puller goes underneath, you don't want pressure on the bearing itself, will make it harder to slide off.

If the pinion or ring gear are to be reused you might not want to heat the part. The hardening is important. You do what you have to, just saying

  • @MrBrobilly

    @MrBrobilly

    7 жыл бұрын

If its going to be reused you dont have to take it off. if you are gentle with the heat it wont hurt it, 250 degrees will do it. It will fall off when it expands. oils starts to smoke at 300 degrees, the bearing wont get hurt till 350. and there will be a lot of smoke, oil can flash after that.

  • @superbestdad

MrBrobilly on a GM pinion maybe but on most others the press fit is too tight, if I'm not mistaken you only get about .001" expansion for every 100 deg F. And the temp required has to be quickly added to keep the pinion from leeching and expanding. I've done it this way many times when I started working but have evolved and found better ways. For the sake of the do it yourselfer your method does work, use caution though

If you have a welder a bead run on the race being removed will allow it to pretty much fall out also. I have removed many hub bearing races from old Harley wheels with that method.

I always sat the gear in an ice water soaked rag when heating the race. And I've found if you try to concentrate the heat in one or two places rather than the whole thing it works better and faster. Never once did the shaft change color( which is a sign of weakening the heat treated steel.). Changed them on all different kinds of shafts like the differential plus many different differentials from cars to semis to large boats even. Even if it doesn't fall off , a screwdriver or small pry bar always was able to get it off.

Pulling that bearing off by the cone front face rib is a good way to loose an eye or break your teeth when the bearing breaks under the force of the puller. If you are going to do it that way at least wrap a rag around the bearing to contain the shrapnel. Trust me I am a millwright in my 60's and have been hit in the teeth from exploding bearings not to mention the people I have worked with over the years that have sight in one eye only from removing bearings in an unsafe manor. Do it right or don't do it at all.

This is not the way the removal kit is intended to be used. The two cheeks should be fitted at the base of the bearing and gradually tightened. They act like a wedge. It is not necessary to remove the roller cage

Mike M that's correct. I did not reuse the pinion gear because I bought a new ring and pinion set. But I only thrashed the old bearing and not the pinion gear itself. I did it the way I did because of the lack of clearance between the bearing and pinion. I hope you found this information useful. Thanks for watching and commenting. Just an idea something I Do once the bearing has pulled up enough. It’s a good idea to re rig the set up and grab the race from the bottom where the pignion gear. You get more meat to grab I have seen the upper lip crack and shatter. Just something I do and would recommend also I like to use a hydraulic press with the bearing separator but when you don’t have hydraulic press then the old screw press works

A bigger impact gun has a hammering effect and it seems to make them come off easier. Heat helps too. Split many in half by grinding a slot and sticking a cold chisel in and hitting with a mini sledge. Put the bearing puller under the race too. Much harder to shatter it that way. Putting it on the upper lip leaves just a little material to rely on for strength. Putting it under the bottom is a lot safer. My preferred way is with heat though. Fun to watch it drop off when it gets hot. Also putting the puller under the bearing before cutting the race off ends up compressing the rollers against that inner lip you see handy man lock his puller on. That way the all press against it and you have a pretty strong set up.

Gotta do this in my 02' Blazer ZR2. Everything is tight & I had 3 shops tell me that the noise was a bad wheel bearing. I changed the 2 Hub Assemblies in front & the Rear Bearings & seals only to still have that noise. Then we figured out it was my pinion bearing. $300 for a shop to install, so I'm letting them do it.. That's with me buying the parts.

  • @dickmick5517

The puller is stronger if installed upside down from the direction you used. With the offset of the puller rods it will tend to clamp tighter in the other direction. And yes the part is correctly called the bearing race.

The silver part that's being refered to as a puller is called a bearing splitter. the splitter can be used many different ways but the way it was used in the video is one of the most cringe worthy ways. if you watch the splitter as torque is applied, you can see the splitter bolts start to bend. a little more torque than he used and lovely warm shards could find their way into your skin or eyes. @@handymanPF At the time you do what you have to do. If you had access to a larger splitter the bending would of been less do to larger bolts. The worry about the smaller splitter is that it could pop off the bearing your pulling and hurt someone. As some have said wrapping the assembly in a towel would be a good idea to slow any parts that might come flying off of something were to slip or break. Stay safe.

Even though this is a fairly old thread, it is still relevant! In comments below, MrBrobilly had the closest solution to do this bearing removal. However, there is one more stage to actually making sure that the bearing will simply slide off or gently pull off and thus avoiding any potential damage to the shaft or the thread end. Once you have the Pinion out, wipe excess oil off and then put the Pinion into a plastic bag and then put into a freezer for an hour. Place the Pinion on a bench with the bearing facing down and then apply gentle heat with a propane torch to the bearing circumference and the bearing should expand and fall off. Do not apply heat to the Pinion!! If the bearing doesn't fall off, just repeat the process of freezing the Pinion and bearing, remove from the freezer and attach the puller and apply heat again to the bearing only. You will be able to remove the bearing by hand. Remember that in life; what a man can do, a woman can do better. Be fair warned! By the way.. When installing the new bearing. Never pound the bearing on! Clean off the Pinion shaft and put back into the freezer for an hour. Prepare the bearing by warming the inner bearing race to about 140-F degree. Take the Pinion out and place it upright on the bench and put a little oil on it, put oil on the inner race and slip the bearing over the Pinion quickly. It should slip all the way down and seat itself. If not sure, then tape it down with the old race or a socket!

You don't need to remove the cage and rollers to pull the bearing with this tool. Just grab the inner race between the gear head and the bearing. Also you risk stripping out the threads on the forcing screw by not lubricating the threads and by using a power tool. Been there, done that. Lesson learned.

wow some of the people on here have really good ways of do the job! but, the 1st tool he used is called a bearing splitter & if he had used it correctly he could of had it off alot faster!! the splitter goes between the pinion & bearing with the same flare side up like he had it. then tighten the nuts and then the splitter will force the bearing away from pinion. then use the rest as he did and presto off quicker!!!!

Once you are down to the raceway, just heat one side with a propane torch for about 3 minutes and it will slide right off. The raceway being of much less mass than the Pinion Shaft will expend much faster than the Shaft. What you did was dangerous as hell.

never make used bearings set-up bearings. your set up will be way off when the new bearings and races are installed. Using a bearing splitter like the silver part of the puller set he is using could be used under the cage, this will roll the bottom of the cage and basically ruin the bearing. the puller that will not harm pinion bearings or carrier bearings is a bit over 400 us so $20 bearing....$400 puller.....you choose

if you use a cold chisel to wedge the bearing, often it will move enough to permit the installation of the bearing plate, this manoeuver is risky and you must be very attentive to not gouge the pinion.

  • @handymanPF

+Alan Adams with it having a very tight tolerance and not having enough room between the bearing and pinion to fit the tool in, it would be difficult. What I did is bought 2 pinion bearings. Machine inner diameter of the dummy bearing so it barely slipped on and off with no problem and then I adjusted my shins that way. Once I have all my proper shims then I install the new pinion bearing. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.

The puller may be upside down as those two horizontal bolts bend, then the catchment area opens up and could slip off the lip of the inner cage. If turned upside down the bending in the two puller horizontal bolts would. would press under the lip of the inner race. I think I would have used a welder to do that job.

Exactly the same flush install. I will look for this style puller and remove the roller cage. Great teacher, thanks. P.S. rename the video title that gets searched to something like bottomed-out bearing removal or whatever the correct terminology is. If that helps.

Since it was so tight against the pinion, I seen this as my only option. What I do it buy 2 pinion bearings. Home one so it slides on and off the pinion smoothly but with a slight snug. Then I measure my shims. Once I have that figured out then I remove the dummy bearing and install the good one. Glad it helped. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe

reading good, marking location of parts removed better, pay attention. If you put things back like you found them except new bearings and seals then the set up hasnt changed. still need the torgue wrench but honestly the home do it yourselfer most likely wont make it past the crush sleeve install.
