1998 Ford Ranger Rear Differential Disassembly
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Disassembly of 1998 Ford Ranger 8.8" Rear Differential. Replacement of rear bearings was required including pinion and carrier bearings. This is an overview of the process. Some steps may not be shown or shown in part. Refer to a shop manual for detailed instructions. I am not a mechanic but I do have a lot of experience with vehicle mechanical work and have had substantial coaching from my brother who is a mechanic.

FINALLY!!! a video on youtube where the guy knows what he is doing. You explained the exquisitely ....all is understood. oh and the same applies for the 01 mustang .Thanx good job.
This video reminds me of when i was a teenager removing the rear end cover on my 88 bronco 2. And just watching all the teeth fall out from the gears in the gear oil into the drain pan. Had to change the rear end. In my dads shop is a plastic peanut butter container with a handfull of the metal from it.

Wow. Great explanations! Thank you very much
good man... glad to have people like you sharing knowledge on the tube... Keep up the good work Happy Motoring
Nice video. Had to do this many times.
thank you, so I can learn to understand mechanics 👍

Nice videos, clear and well filmed. Thanks.
Thank you very good video.
Kodak Zi8 - amazing little camera!
nice video. I am in process of doing my rear end right now. this is my first rebuild. watched many many videos on you tube, read many articles, and even ordered a book from amazon on how to rebuild the 8.8" ford differential. anyway just wanted to say the gear oil that came from your differential looked like tar instead of gear oil. not picking on you by any means. but this was a good video to see how to remove the old bearing cups. will be posting a few of my own as I work on mine.
Excellent video. My only complaint is you didn't tell a lot of stupid jokes and show weird memes and talk about other stupid things going on around you. The most amazing thing is I could actually watch it at the regular rate, I didn't have to speed it up to two times to just skip over stuff like everybody else's bs keep up the good work.
Понятно всё, без слов.лайк..
Great vid! Thanks for doing it and using a tripod!!

All the best
Nice video. My pinion gear did not come out nearly as neatly. But then again, I live in New England.
Excellent video!
Had to do this yesterday on an 89 4x4 ranger. Good vid. But you skipped a few steps looked alot easier then it really was.
awww... you didn't show the part on how to take the axles out. I'm planning on changing the axle bearings and seals only. Is there any way that you can further describe how to remove the cross pin and bolt? Is this easy to do on the driveway or would it be faster on a lift?
Is this the same for 98 Ford Explorer? Do you know the TORQUE # to apply FOR THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL BOLTS in the end?

Ok, question for the professionals: 2003 ford crownvic lx. new axles and axle bearings. but still 4 more bearings right? one of them sounds rough, more so during braking but rough all the time. when it shifts to 2nd i feel a slight bump somewhere, thought it was the trans but idk. is somethng misbehaving in the diff?
good
wow, i have no idea on this one
question, would replacing the rear bearing in my 99 Durango solve this issue? i am hearing a loud whine sound(like a turbo spooling up) when i reach the speed of 30mph and above. this began after pulling a loaded u-haul trailer a month ago.
very useful. However, it is important to see how parts are disassembled and this it is not showed
Good
hmm... im in the process of cutting the diff open to relieve pressure and hopefully be able to take it out

Good morning, . Thank you for sharing the videos, they are very useful. I have a question, how can I extract the Pinion from the Sphere? Notice that the pin was swept, the Pinion was lowered and with the teeth of the Sphere the tip broke. I want to replace it but I cannot remove it. can you help me?
My 97 is doing the same thing how long did it take you and did that help stop the noise in the rear?
I'm enjoying watching your good video. I support you in Korea. (Where all the car's informarion are) I run the car maintenance KZread channel in Korea.

Pretty big channel! 😎👍
Afetr I removed my driveshaft I found no fore/aft, up/down, or side/side movement in my pinion shaft. I deduced that the bearings were probably in good condition. I found no chipped gear teeth on my ring and pinion either. My diff gears were shiny and had a lot of play between them. After I replaced the diff gears about 70% of my rotational play went away.
What were the symptoms on the truck before you did that job? was it Vibration at high speeds?? My 2001 ford ranger vibrates from the rear end at high speeds and I can not figure out what is wrong, I had the tires balanced but no, I think it feels like loose drive shaft or something in the differential. any advice??
all you needed to do is adjust your shims in the pinion gear and tighten up that play... the bearings had wear, but would still last another 100,000 miles no problem

what kind of fluid do you need to use?
my differential gears dont want to come out i took out the 2 holders then the pinion yolk and i try to pull it out could it be different on a 96 ford ranger 2wd
Hi grate video I have to do this on my 04 Ford ranger do you possibly know the size of the individual bearings so I could buy them before removing them all thank you
esta bonita hija
Did any one notice that very little fluid came out when he pulled the rear cover? No wonder it has a problem. Change the fluid at 60,000 and use Synthetic 75w-90 if is a locking rear make sure the gear lube has the limited slip Additive in it or buy it to add. (Friction Stabilizer) it will say on the bottle. With Synthetic you are good for another 100,000 miles or more.

Is Lucas oil a good oil to use
@stevenking2980

NO. Eaton G80 is the norm on most GM products for the last 25 years. They are locking diffs, but do NOT have clutch assemblies. They require only regular gear oil.

fantastic video, what kind of camera were you using?

now how to put it back together..
I have a question, my 02 ford ranger started making a whirring noise in the rear. Then after maybe two weeks the noise got worse. A loud clicking noise that reminds me of the sound a bicycle tire makes when a playing card was pinned on with a clothes pin. And it's getting worse. Any ideas? This is my only means of transport

Would you please share your oil seal supplier in your local ? Jiangli is a supplier of rubber seal parts.
Question, what kind of socket and size did you use to remove 4 bolts holding drive shaft on?

did you ever find out what was wrong, I'm having the exact same problem
I've seen brand new bearings that have come from a certain asian country that looked that pitted.
Is that a limited slip rear end.
Were you hearing a "howling" noise before you changed all the bearings?
Infinity QX4 '99, making a vibration like noise when rpm 2000-3000 20-35mph, the noise is similar to heat shields vibration but it is comming from rear defferential. Almost like an oscillation. Wat can it be does anyone know? (as of now winter it doesnt do it, but def doing it in summer) Mechanics are baffled...
Boy I could smell it from here

Colour of diff oil is enough to show lack of service. If any.

100% preventable. That gear oil did not look good. I had that same truck and its a hassle to change the diff oil with no drain plug.

I had a 98 ford ranger 4x4. Bought it new back in the day. Worst truck I ever owned! Nothing but problems from day 1. In fact now that I think about it all my Ford products were junk.
