1998 Ford Ranger Rear Differential Disassembly

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Disassembly of 1998 Ford Ranger 8.8" Rear Differential. Replacement of rear bearings was required including pinion and carrier bearings. This is an overview of the process. Some steps may not be shown or shown in part. Refer to a shop manual for detailed instructions. I am not a mechanic but I do have a lot of experience with vehicle mechanical work and have had substantial coaching from my brother who is a mechanic.
You may wish to view my related video on axle bearing and seal replacement.

This video reminds me of when i was a teenager removing the rear end cover on my 88 bronco 2. And just watching all the teeth fall out from the gears in the gear oil into the drain pan. Had to change the rear end. In my dads shop is a plastic peanut butter container with a handfull of the metal from it.

nice video. I am in process of doing my rear end right now. this is my first rebuild. watched many many videos on you tube, read many articles, and even ordered a book from amazon on how to rebuild the 8.8" ford differential. anyway just wanted to say the gear oil that came from your differential looked like tar instead of gear oil. not picking on you by any means. but this was a good video to see how to remove the old bearing cups. will be posting a few of my own as I work on mine.

Excellent video. My only complaint is you didn't tell a lot of stupid jokes and show weird memes and talk about other stupid things going on around you. The most amazing thing is I could actually watch it at the regular rate, I didn't have to speed it up to two times to just skip over stuff like everybody else's bs keep up the good work.

awww... you didn't show the part on how to take the axles out. I'm planning on changing the axle bearings and seals only. Is there any way that you can further describe how to remove the cross pin and bolt? Is this easy to do on the driveway or would it be faster on a lift?

Afetr I removed my driveshaft I found no fore/aft, up/down, or side/side movement in my pinion shaft. I deduced that the bearings were probably in good condition. I found no chipped gear teeth on my ring and pinion either. My diff gears were shiny and had a lot of play between them. After I replaced the diff gears about 70% of my rotational play went away.

What were the symptoms on the truck before you did that job? was it Vibration at high speeds?? My 2001 ford ranger vibrates from the rear end at high speeds and I can not figure out what is wrong, I had the tires balanced but no, I think it feels like loose drive shaft or something in the differential. any advice??

all you needed to do is adjust your shims in the pinion gear and tighten up that play... the bearings had wear, but would still last another 100,000 miles no problem

Did any one notice that very little fluid came out when he pulled the rear cover? No wonder it has a problem. Change the fluid at 60,000 and use Synthetic 75w-90 if is a locking rear make sure the gear lube has the limited slip Additive in it or buy it to add. (Friction Stabilizer) it will say on the bottle. With Synthetic you are good for another 100,000 miles or more.

A loud clicking noise that reminds me of the sound a bicycle tire makes when a playing card was pinned on with a clothes pin. And it's getting worse. Any ideas? This is my only means of transport

Wat can it be does anyone know? (as of now winter it doesnt do it, but def doing it in summer) Mechanics are baffled...
